The retinex is a human perception based image processing algorithm which provides color constancy and dynamic range compression. The multi scale retinex with color restoration (MSRCR) has shown itself to be a very versatile automatic image enhancement algorithm that simultaneously provides dynamic range compression, color constancy, and color rendition. But the MSRCR results suffer from lower global brightness and partial color distortion. In order to improve the MSRCR method, this paper presents a modified MSRCR algorithm to Landsat-5 image enhancement considering percent liner stretch and histogram adjustment. Finally, the effect of modified MSRCR method on Landsat-5 image enhancement is analyzed and the comparison with other color adjustment methods such as gamma correction and histogram equalization is reported in the experimental results.

AbstractIn the state of the art, grayscale image enhancement algorithms are typically adopted for enhancement of RGB color images captured with low or non-uniform illumination. As these methods are applied to each RGB channel independently, imbalanced inter-channel enhancements (color distortion) can often be observed in the resulting images. On the other hand, images with non-uniform illumination enhanced by the retinex algorithm are prone to artifacts such as local blurring, halos, and over-enhancement. To address these problems, an improved RGB color image enhancement method is proposed for images captured under non-uniform illumination or in poor visibility, based on weighted guided image filtering (WGIF). Unlike the conventional retinex algorithm and its variants, WGIF uses a surround function instead of a Gaussian filter to estimate the illumination component; it avoids local blurring and halo artifacts due to its anisotropy and adaptive local regularization. To limit color distortion, RGB images are first converted to HSI (hue, saturation, intensity) color space, where only the intensity channel is enhanced, before being converted back to RGB space by a linear color restoration algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for both RGB color and grayscale images captured under low exposure and non-uniform illumination, with better visual quality and objective evaluation scores than from comparator algorithms. It is also efficient due to use of a linear color restoration algorithm.

Color restoration algorithm using color instance-based reasoning is proposed. The proposed system does not employ a physical model but color instance. The color instance, Color Change Vector, is defined based on distribution of color values for 175 color scheme cards taken under low and standard illuminations. Modification of CCV is proposed based on color value and linguistic expression. The given image is restored by adding the appropriate color instances for a given color value. A prototype system for color restoration is constructed. An experiment is done with dynamic images of an outdoor walking person, to evaluate the performance of the proposed system in terms of color-difference and processing time. The proposed method presents a foundation for identifying a person captured by a practical security system using a low cost CCD camera.

In order to verify the technology of the membrane diffractive imaging system for Chinese next generation geo-stationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite, a series of ground experiments have been carried out using a membrane optical camera with 80 mm aperture (Φ80) lens. The inherent chromatic aberration due to diffractive imaging appears in the obtained data. To address the issue, an effective color restoration algorithm framework by matching, tailoring, and non-linearly stretching the image histograms is proposed in this letter. Experimental results show the proposed approach has good performances in color restoration of the diffractive optical images than previous methods. The effectiveness and robustness of the algorithm are also quantitatively assessed using various color deviation indexes. The results indicate that the chromatic aberration of diffractive images can be effectively removed by about 85%. Also, the proposed method presents reasonable computational efficiency.

When using image processing technology to analyze mineral particle size in complex scenes, it is difficult to separate the objects from the background with traditional algorithms. This paper proposes an ore image segmentation algorithm based on a histogram accumulation moment, which is applied to multi-scenario ore object location and recognition. Firstly, the multi-scale Retinex color restoration algorithm is used to improve the contrast in the dark region and eliminates the shadows generated by the stacked adhesion ores. Then, the zero-order and first-order cumulative moments close to the selected gray level are calculated, reducing the error caused by noise. Finally, the selected gray level gradually approaches the optimal threshold to avoid falling into local optimum. It can segment mineral images with unimodal or insignificant bimodal characteristic histogram effectively and accurately. Ore images in three different scenarios are used to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides better segmentation results than other methods.
