Wireless LAN security issues and solutions

Wireless Technology is growing at a phenomenal rate. Of the many present challenges highlighted by the author, increased security is one of the main challenges for both developers and end users. This chapter presents this important security aspect of implementing a mobile solution in the context of Sydney International airport. After tackling initial challenges and issues faced during the implementation of wireless technology, this chapter demonstrates how security issues and wireless application were implemented at this mobile-intense airport organization. The decision to deploy and manage the wireless spectrum throughout the Airport campus meant that the wireless LAN had to share the medium with public users, tenants and aircraft communications on the same bandwidth. Therefore, this case study also demonstrates invaluable approach to protect unintended users from breach of existing security policies adopted by their corporate network. Authentication and data privacy challenges, as well as complete WLAN connectivity for tenants, public and corporate usage is presented in this case study.

Although it brought a lot of convenience to people's lives, wireless LAN security problems also frequently occurred. This paper mainly aims to analyze the security risk and at the same time offer some preventive measures.

Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology is developing rapidly with the help of wireless communication technology and social demand. During the development of WLAN, the security is more and more important, and wireless monitoring and shielding are of prime importance for network security. In this paper, we have explored various security issues of IEEE 802.11 based wireless network and analyzed numerous problems in implementing the wireless monitoring and shielding system. We identify the challenges which monitoring and shielding system needs to be aware of, and then provide a feasible mechanism to avoid those challenges. We implemented an actual wireless LAN monitoring and shielding system on Maemo operating system to monitor wireless network data stream efficiently and solve the security problems of mobile users. More importantly, the system analyzes wireless network protocols efficiently and flexibly, reveals rich information of the IEEE 802.11 protocol such as traffic distribution and different IP connections, and graphically displays later. Moreover, the system running results show that the system has the capability to work stably, and accurately and analyze the wireless protocols efficiently.

The fourth generation (4G) of mobile networks will be a technology-opportunistic and user-centric system combining the economic and technological advantages of different transmission technologies to provide a context-aware and adaptive service access anywhere and at any time. Security turns out to be one of the major problems that arise at different interfaces when trying to realize such a heterogeneous system by integrating the existing wireless and mobile systems. Indeed, current wireless systems use very different and difficult to combine proprietary security mechanisms, typically relying on the associated user and infrastructure management means. It is generally impossible to apply a security policy to a system consisting of different heterogeneous subsystems. In this chapter, we first briefly present the security of candidate 4G access systems, such as 2/3G, wireless LAN (WLAN), WiMax, and so forth. In the next step, we discuss the arising security issues of the system interconnection. We namely define a logical access problem in heterogeneous systems and show that both the technology-bound, low-layer and the overlaid high-layer access architectures exhibit clear shortcomings. We present and discuss several proposed approaches aimed at achieving an adaptive, scalable, rapid, easy-to-manage, and secure 4G service access independently of the used operator and infrastructure. We then define general requirements on candidate systems to support such 4G security.
