The low harmonic distortion and reduced switching losses are the advantages of using the multilevel inverter. For this purpose, the three-level inverter is used in this paper as a three-phase four-leg shunt active power filter (SAPF). The SAPF is used to eliminate the harmonic current to compensate the reactive power current, and to balance the load currents under an unbalanced non-linear load. A fuzzy logic controller and self-tuning filters (STF) are used to control the active power filter (APF) and generate the reference current. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed control strategy, we compared it with a conventional p − q theory, under distortion voltage conditions and unbalanced non-linear load. The Matlab-Simulink toolbox is used to implement the algorithm of Fuzzy logic control. The performance of the SAPF controller is found very effective and adequate as compared with the p − q theory.

This paper focuses on a four-wire shunt active power filter (APF) control scheme proposed to improve the performance of the APF. This filter is used to compensate harmonic distortion in three-phase four-wire systems. Several harmonic suppression techniques have been widely proposed and applied to minimize harmonic effects. The proposed control scheme can compensate harmonics and reactive power of the nonlinear loads simultaneously. This approach is compared to the conventional shunt APF reference compensation strategy. The developed algorithm is validated by simulation tests using MATLAB Simulink. The obtained results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and confirmed the theoretical developments for balanced and unbalanced nonlinear loads.

This paper presents the simulation-based study and results of a three-phase shunt active power filter (SAPF) for power quality improvement. The power quality of the power systems is degraded because of the presence of non-linear loads at the consumer end. The SAPF can reduce the impact of harmonics caused by the non-linear loads. The analyzed SAPF system is modeled and simulated using MATLAB-Simulink workspace. The ultimate goal of this study is to improve the total harmonic distortion of the system as per the standards defined by IEEE-519.

A novel hybrid series active power filter to eliminate harmonics and compensate reactive power is presented and analyzed. The proposed active compensation technique is based on a hybrid series active filter using ATS algorithm in the conventional Sinusoidal Fryze voltage (SFV) control technique. This chapter discusses the comparative performances of conventional Sinusoidal Fryze voltage control strategy and ATS-optimized controllers. ATS algorithm has been used to obtain the optimum value of Kp and Ki. Analysis of the hybrid series active power filter system under non-linear load condition and its impact on the performance of the controllers is evaluated. MATLAB/Simulink results and Total harmonic distortion (THD) shows the practical viability of the controller for hybrid series active power filter to provide harmonic isolation of non-linear loads and to comply with IEEE 519 recommended harmonic standards. The ATS-optimized controller has been attempted for shunt active power filter too, and its performance has also been discussed in brief.

Electronic equipments, widely used in present living era, required to have improved power quality. When such type of equipments are connected to electric supply distribution system, they introduce non sinusoidal effect in the line current because of their non-linear relationship in voltage and current. Moreover, harmonics in the line current are also produced. With constantly growing imploration of such type of nonlinear equipments at a large scale, harmonic distortions in line current have become a significant crunch. This required some methods involving the reduction of harmonics in the line current as well as Power Factor Improvement/Correction. The primary goal of this proposed work is to reduce the harmonics produced in line current and to improve power quality of non-linear load by designing a converter with parallel processing scheme, named TSH Active power filter (Transformer less shunt active power filter) with PID controller. Here a separate dc source is employed to supply the shunt connected converter, a voltage source inverter, to remove the requirement of bulky transformer at supply end. This paper depicted the process of reduction of total harmonic distortion (THD), generated due to nonlinear characteristics of load and power factor improvement by shunt compensation. The proposed designs are modeled and simukated using Matlab simulation software.
