Multi-access edge computing implementations are ever increasing in both the number of deployments and the areas of application. In this context, the easiness in the operations of packet forwarding between two end devices being part of a particular edge computing infrastructure may allow for a more efficient performance. In this paper, an arithmetic framework based in a layered approach has been proposed in order to optimize the packet forwarding actions, such as routing and switching, in generic edge computing environments by taking advantage of the properties of integer division and modular arithmetic, thus simplifying the search of the proper next hop to reach the desired destination into simple arithmetic operations, as opposed to having to look into the routing or switching tables. In this sense, the different type of communications within a generic edge computing environment are first studied, and afterwards, three diverse case scenarios have been described according to the arithmetic framework proposed, where all of them have been further verified by using arithmetic means with the help of applying theorems, as well as algebraic means, with the help of searching for behavioral equivalences.

Some vehicular Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications have a strict requirement on the end-to-end delay where edge computing can be used to provide a short delay for end-users by conducing efficient caching and computing at the edge nodes. However, a fast and efficient communication route creation in multi-access vehicular environment is an underexplored research problem. In this paper, we propose a collaborative learning-based routing scheme for multi-access vehicular edge computing environment. The proposed scheme employs a reinforcement learning algorithm based on end-edge-cloud collaboration to find routes in a proactive manner with a low communication overhead. The routes are also preemptively changed based on the learned information. By integrating the ``proactive'' and ``preemptive'' approach, the proposed scheme can achieve a better forwarding of packets as compared with existing alternatives. We conduct extensive and realistic computer simulations to show the performance advantage of the proposed scheme over existing baselines.

Recently, multi-access edge computing (MEC) is a promising paradigm to offer resource-intensive and latency-sensitive services for IoT devices by pushing computing functionalities away from the core cloud to the edge of networks. Most existing research has focused on effectively improving the use of computing resources for computation offloading while neglecting non-trivial amounts of data, which need to be pre-stored to enable service execution (e.g., virtual/augmented reality, video analytics, etc.). In this paper, we, therefore, investigate service provisioning in MEC consisting of two sub-problems: (i) service placement determining services to be placed in each MEC node under its storage capacity constraint, and (ii) request scheduling determining where to schedule each request considering network delay and computation limitation of each MEC node. The main objective is proposed to ensure the quality of experience (QoE) of users, which is also yet to be studied extensively. A utility function modeling user perception of service latency is used to evaluate QoE. We formulate the problem of service provisioning in MEC as an Integer Nonlinear Programming (INLP), aiming at maximizing the total utility of all users. We then propose a Nested-Genetic Algorithm (Nested-GA) consisting of two genetic algorithms, each of whom solves a sub-problem regarding service placement or request scheduling decisions. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that our proposal outperforms conventional methods in terms of the total utility and achieves close-to-optimal solutions.
