Objective The purpose of this study was to identify, synthesize, and discuss objective behavioral or physiological metrics of surgeons’ nontechnical skills (NTS) in the literature. Background NTS, or interpersonal or cognitive skills, have been identified to contribute to safe and efficient surgical performance; however, current assessments are subjective, checklist-based tools. Intraoperative skill evaluation, such as technical skills, has been previously utilized as an objective measure to address such limitations. Methods Five databases in engineering, behavioral science, and medicine were searched following PRISMA reporting guidelines. Eligibility criteria included studies with NTS objective measurements, surgeons, and took place within simulated or live operations. Results Twenty-three articles were included in this review. Objective metrics included communication metrics and measures from physiological responses such as changes in brain activation and motion of the eye. Frequencies of content-coded communication in surgery were utilized in 16 studies and were associated with not only the communication construct but also cognitive constructs of situation awareness and decision making. This indicates the underlying importance of communication in evaluating the NTS constructs. To synthesize the scoped literature, a framework based on the one-way communication model was used to map the objective measures to NTS constructs. Conclusion Objective NTS measurement of surgeons is still preliminary, and future work on leveraging objective metrics in parallel with current assessment tools is needed. Application Findings from this work identify objective NTS metrics for measurement applications in a surgical environment.

Abstract Background To evaluate the change of accommodation and ocular discomfort according to the display size, using quantitative measurements of accommodation and ocular discomfort through subjective and objective metrics. Methods Forty six subjects without any ophthalmic disease history were asked to watch the documentary movie, using two different sizes of smart devices; smartphones and tablets. Before and after using devices, the near point accommodation (NPA) and the near point convergence (NPC) were measured, and objective accommodation was measured using an auto refractometer/keratometer. The subjective ocular discomfort was assessed through a survey. Results Both devices showed a decrease in post-use NPA and NPC, and the change after use of the smartphone was significantly severe, 1.8 and 2.5 folds respectively, compared to tablet (p = 0.044, p = 0.033, respectively). Neither smartphone nor tablet showed significant changes in the accommodative response induced by dynamic accommodative stimulus of auto refractometer/keratometer (p = 0.240 and p = 0.199, respectively). Subjects showed a more severe increase in ocular discomfort after using smartphones (p = 0.035) and reported feeling tired even with shorter use times (p = 0.012). Conclusions Both devices showed significant decreases in NPA and NPC, and the larger changes were seen when using the small display smartphone. Even within 20minutes of using, subjects start to feel ocular discomfort, and it was more severe and faster after smartphones than tablets. Therefore, the smaller the display size, the greater the adverse impact on eyes, and thus, appropriate display size will need to be selected depending on the time and purpose of use.

Fans are main components e.g. in heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems for vehicles or buildings, cooling units of engines and electronic circuits, and household appliances such as kitchen exhaust hoods or vacuum cleaners. End-users increasingly demand a high sound quality of their system or device. The overall objective of a recent research project at the University of Siegen is a multidimensional assessment of fan sound quality. In a first step an advanced novel semantic differential for the assessment of fan-related sounds is established with the aid of carefully designed jury tests. Eventually, this semantic differential is employed for sound quality jury tests of fans in kitchen exhaust hoods, heat pumps and air purifiers as a first case. Finally, a prediction model is suggested, which relates the outcome from the jury tests to objective metrics. A principal component analysis is carried out and yields five main assessment criteria with 23 relevant adjective scales. The results show that the perceived sound quality of fan systems is mainly determined by the loudness and tonality of the sound. The spectral content (represented by the sharpness) as well as the time structure (represented by the roughness) have no significant impact on perceived sound quality of the fan systems investigated.
