The Cercyon shinanensis species group with two included species is erected within the nominotypical subgenus of Cercyon Leach, 1817. This group is compared with other Palaearctic species groups of Cercyon s. str. The little-known C. shinanensis Nakane, 1965 from Japan (Honshu) is redescribed and its diagnostic features are given. Cercyon sundukovi sp. nov. is described from the Russian Far East (Kunashir Island).

We compiled a list of the ground beetles that have been confirmed to occur to date in the southern Kuril Islands, Russian Far East. The list includes 168 species, all of which are known from Kunashir Island and the species richness on the remaining islands ranges from 68 (Shikotan Island) to 21 species (Tanfil'eva Island). The species richness is shown to depend sublinearly on island area, this being unusual for island faunas (Triantis et al. 2011). A large part of data is published here for the first time on the records of ground beetles in the southern Kuril Islands with precise localities. This allows not only the taxonomic composition of the faunas, but also the composition of local faunas to be discussed.

The study of 23 excrements of Far Eastern skinks collected on the Kunashir Island revealed 75 species of invertebrates that served for the skinks as a food source. Coleopteran (41 taxa from 14 families) were most diverse, which is explained by the good preservation of chitin of beetles during passage through the digestive tract of lizards. The crickets Dianemobius fascipes nigrofasciatus (Matsumura, 1904) (96 specimens), caddisflies (Trichoptera indet. 2, 36 specimens), and barkflies (Psocoptera indet., 19 specimens) prevailed in number of identified specimens in the samples.

The spread of two species of oleaster – Elaeagnus angustifolia and E. multiflora, cultivated and wild in the south of the Far East of Russia, has been clarified. Their invasive potential is assessed. Only a single case of invasion of E. multiflora into natural plant communities in vicinity of the Nevelsk in southern Sakhalin has been identified. Previously, this species was known only in culture or as wild in places of former culture in the southwest of Sakhalin and Kunashir Island (southern Kuril Islands).

Holocene deposits from the central and southern regions of the Kunashir Island contain tephra from 12 volcanic eruptions (Kn1–12). We studied radiocarbon data, mineralogical composition, and distribution of the tephra layers in different Holocene facies. The main sources of the Holocene tephra samples were the volcanoes of Hokkaido Island. The distribution of ash layers on Kunashir Island allows us to estimate their direction. Ash layers can be reliable markers for age determination of different coastal landforms on open oceanic shores. We propose here a tephrastratigraphical scheme for different Middle-Late Holocene facies.
