The chapter gives an outline of the shift in HRM from being intuitive to quantitative in its decision making and overall functioning. The role of HRM is transforming with application of statistical techniques that make HR more evidence based and accountable. The chapter will discuss some successful applications of statistical techniques, basic and, in HRM by renowned organizations worldwide as well as elucidate upon some of the most applied statistical techniques. After reading this chapter learner will appreciate the need for applying Statistics in HRM, have an understanding of the avenues for application of statistical tools and get an outline of the various statistical techniques that are appropriate for different HR functions.

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and its Foundation have increasingly focused on linking science to practice, and to that end have partnered with Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and its Foundation to create the Human Resource Management (HRM) Impact Award for firms demonstrating great practices in evidence-based human capital and management practices. Jack in the Box, the 2016 winner of this award, was so honored because of its integration of surveys and analytic models with leadership practices to understand, predict, and manage the right people drivers of important business outcomes. Instead of a research paper, we have chosen to share their story through conversational interview questions with the various stakeholders who contributed to the journey leading to the award and, in so doing, provide key lessons for others wishing to increase the impact of human capital in their organizations.

The United Nations’ report “Our Common Future” contributed to underline the crucial role of human resource management in strategically greening the organization and, in turn, economics and society at large. This awareness gave birth to green human resource management (GHRM). Despite the high number of papers addressing GHRM, this topic lacks a proper theoretical, methodological, and empirical systematization. A possible step towards a better understanding of GHRM is an evidence-based analysis of its practices’ outcomes. Developing these reflections and considerations, we conducted a systematic literature review on the evidence-based literature about the antecedents and outcomes of GHRM practices, following the PRISMA guidelines. We selected 48 papers. Most selected studies (n = 25) did not tackle single GHRM activities and processes. Studies considering specific GHRM areas tackled some dimensions more frequently (e.g., “training and development”, “performance management and appraisal”), while underrepresenting others (e.g., “Job analysis and description”). At the same time, selected studies focused on GHRM consequences for organizations, showing a high adherence to the ability, motivation, opportunity (AMO) theoretical framework. Suggestions for future research are provided.
