O feijoeiro é atacado, além de fungos, nematóides e bactérias, por vírus que podem causar danos e perdas numa lavoura. As doenças causadas por vírus têm exercido um papel relevante na baixa produtividade do feijoeiro no Brasil e outros países Latino-Americanos. Os métodos de controle para as viroses de plantas cultivadas são, em geral, muito restritos. Pela falta desta informação e pela importância da cultura do feijão, se traz esta revisão, onde são relatadas as doenças virais mais importantes desta cultura dentro do Brasil e fora dele, explicando detalhadamente sua sintomatologia, etiologia e seu controle. As doenças viróticas mais importantes no feijoeiro no Brasil são o bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), bean golden mosaic virus (BGMV), bean rugose mosaic virus (BRMV), cowpea mild mottle virus (CpMMV) e southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV). Esta revisão traz o mais importante em relação às doenças primordiais causadas por vírus de plantas na cultura de feijão.

Shetland is a medium-late maturing, high-yielding white (navy) bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar. It's main advantages are its earlier maturity and better standability than Dresden and OAC Rico. It has good cooking quality and it is resistant to the alpha and delta races of anthracnose and to races 1 and 15 of bean common mosaic virus. AC ELK is a high-yielding, light red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar with early-season maturity in Ontario. Its main advantages are high yield potential and an early maturity. Seed has acceptable cooking/canning quality. AC ELK is resistant to race 1 of bean common mosaic virus and anthracnose (Collectotrichum lindemuthianum) race alpha and alpha Brazil. SummaryNumerous dwarf bean accessions were screened for resistance to three strains of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). Many lines were resistant to a strain of BCMV isolated at Wellesbourne (NVRS) and the Dutch NL4 strain, but only a few lines showed resistance or tolerance to the Dutch NL3 strain. The NVRS strain was found to belong to BCMV Group IVa.Hybridization experiments showed that resistance to the NVRS strain of BCMV in the dry bean cvs Seafarer and Aurora was controlled by a dominant gene and that in Seafarer this was probably the dominant I gene originally found in Corbett Refugee.

Red Rider is a determinate cranberry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar with medium-late season maturity. It has relatively tall erect plants without vines and a large seed size (approximately 63.7 g 100 seed-1). Red Rider is moderately resistant to race 15 of bean common mosaic virus. The seed has acceptable cooking and canning quality.Key words: Phaseolus vulgaris L., cranberry bean, dry bean, cultivar description
