Keyword(s):
This contribution reviews the present status of computational procedures in mechanics and indicates some of the areas in which research is active. The generality of the finite element method is stressed as the all-embracing approximation procedure and attention is focused on the need for developing efficient measures of accuracy and adaptive procedures for achievement of a specified precision. Developments aimed at improving the overall efficiency of computation are highlighted and some new areas of application indicated.
