Analysis Beam-Column Cellular By Finite Element Method

Nowadays in the construction of modem buildings, it is necessary to accommodate pipes and ducts necessary services, such as air conditioning, water supply, sewerage, electricity, computer networks, and telephone networks. Cellular members – steel I‐ shaped structural elements with circular web openings at regular intervals – have been used as beams for more than 35 years now. Although in the past already a large deal of research was performed into the subject of the behavior of cellular beams, almost no attention has been paid to the application of cellular members as columns. The column will be analyzed using the finite element method to calculate the critical load and compared with the Eurocode3 standard, web-post buckling, and frame using cellular member by FEM.

Hydrothermal analysis on non-Newtonian nanofluid flow of blood through porous vessels

In this paper, the flow of non-Newtonian blood fluid with nanoparticles inside a vessel with a porous wall in presence of a magnetic field have been investigated. This study aimed to investigate various parameters such as magnetic field and porosity on velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles. In this research, three different models (Vogel, Reynolds and Constant) for viscosity have been used as an innovation. The governing equations are solved by Akbari-Ganji's Method (AGM) analytical method and the Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to better represent the phenomena in the vessel. The results show that increasing the Gr number, porosity and negative pressure increase the blood velocity and increasing the magnetic field intensity decrease the blood velocity.

FEM-Based Comparison of Mandrel Wear Resulting from Elongation of Pipes Manufactured from Various Materials on a Two-Roll Screw Rolling Mill

The present article discusses the cylindrical mandrel wear change during rolling using MISIS - 130 D mill depending on the type of rolled billets materials used. The research on the mandrel wear of the screw rolling mill during pipes elongation was carried out using the finite element method (FEM). The results of the wear modeling showed that the depth of the metal removed on the mandrel surface during stainless steel pipes elongation was higher as compared to alloyed and carbon steel pipes. The significant wear of the mandrel during stainless steel pipe rolling can be explained by the rise in the applied metal force resulting from the introduction of alloying components such as chromium and nickel into rolled billets materials. Consequently, the obtained modeling results can allow predicting the service life of working tools.

Analysis of longitudinal leaky surface acoustic waves on quartz thin plate bonded to similar-material substrate

The propagation and resonance properties of longitudinal leaky surface acoustic waves (LLSAWs) on bonded structures consisting of a quartz (Qz) thin plate and a Qz support substrate with different Euler angles were investigated theoretically. By using both an X-cut Qz thin plate and a Qz support substrate with optimal Euler angles, we obtained LLSAWs with a larger coupling factor, a smaller attenuation, and a lower temperature coefficient of frequency than those on a single Qz substrate. Furthermore, from the resonance properties simulated by the finite element method, the bonded structures were found to exhibit a large admittance ratio and a high quality factor, which could not be obtained when using a single Qz substrate; the bandwidth however was as small as 0.016-0.086%.

Methodology of Teaching Methods of FEM Analysis Using Software ANSYS

This paper presents the authors' experience of teaching the finite element method (FEM) at university. With the development of computational tools in the second half of the twentieth century, there was also the development of computational methods focused on the algorithmization of engineering tasks based on FEM. From the solution of individual problems of the state of stress and deformation from the influence of the external environment, a complex solution of the mutual interaction of the system of deformable bodies (elements) has been performed while improving the physical and geometric characteristics of modern materials and structures. Many processes in the automatic design system take place as if in a "black box" and the process of verifying the achieved results becomes the most important stage in the design activity. Without knowledge of the theoretical basis of FEM, physical and mathematical modeling, verification procedures and methods, the design of a structure cannot be safe and reliable. In this paper we present one of the possibilities how the student can get acquainted with the theoretical foundations of FEM and with computational procedures using ANSYS software.

Pedestrian Bridge Evaluation and Modelling Subjected to Running Load Cases

<p>This paper presents the dynamic measurements performed at two pedestrian bridges in Sweden subjected to different loading scenarios. Using accelerometers, the natural frequencies, the experimental mode shapes, and damping properties were determined for each bridge. Analysis were performed using the generalized single degree of freedom theory, the finite element method and the coupled system approach taking into account the flying phase of the running load. Additionaly, a simplified sensitivity analysis is presented in terms of accelerations due to the pedestrian transient event of a running load case. Results indicate that there is an excellent agreement between the aforementioned modelling strategies and, that it is possible to have human structure interaction under running load scenarios.</p>

Biomechanical Analysis of Staples for Epiphysiodesis

Limb asymmetry can, and often does, cause various health problems. Blount bone staples (clips) are used to correct such uneven growth. This article analyzes the performance of a biomechanical staple during bone (tibia) growth arrest. The staples considered in this study were made of 1.4441 stainless steel, the model of tibia consisted of two materials representing corticalis and spongiosis. Hooke’s law was used for modeling materials’ behaviors for finite element analysis (FEA). The maxima of stress and total staple displacement were evaluated using the finite element method and verification of the results, along with the determination of the maximum loading (growing) force that the staples are capable of withstanding, was performed experimentally. The presented method can be used to determine the safety and usability of staples for bone growth arrest. According to our results, the design of Blount staples considered in this paper is safe and suitable for orthopedic treatment.

New support roller profile design for railway wheel re-profiling process by under-floor lathes with a single cutting tool

The wheel re-profiling is an important part of railway wheelset maintenance. Researchers and railway operators have been very concerned about how to minimize the loss of time during wheel re-profiling without decreasing safety. Avoiding wheelset disassembly means considerable time savings, while reducing wheel damage during operation. Underfloor wheel lathes are the most appropriate tool to achieve this double objective, and therefore the most used nowadays. Multi-cut tool lathes have the disadvantage of being extremely expensive. On the other hand, with single tool lathes, re-profiling is not smooth or safe enough when current convex profile support rollers are used. It is well known by the companies that during reprofiling the wheel suffers impacts/damaged. In this article, a methodology to optimize the profile of the support rollers used in underfloor single tool lathes for railway wheel re-profiling is proposed. This novel profile design will minimize damage and increase the safety of such lathes, since it proposes a greater smoothness in the process. Simulations of re-profiling process have been carried out by the finite element method showing that the designed roller profile reduces drastically the impact/damage during the operation. The impact generated between the re-profiling wheel and the rollers is avoided. Profile-optimized support rollers have been used in a real underfloor wheel lathe, showing good results.

Influence of Internal Defects of Basic Metal of the Equipment on Its Operational Properties

The paper deals with the issue of safe operation of technological equipment with a defect in the base metal of the delamination type. Mathematical modeling of the stress-strain state in the defect zone by the finite element method in ANSYS software package is carried out. The article presents and analyzes the obtained graphs of the distribution of stress intensity factors. Based on the analysis of the obtained dependences, it is shown that stratification of the base metal does not have a significant effect on the performance of the process equipment.
