Investigation of the State Transition and Moving Boundary in a Pneumatic–Hydraulic Coupled Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

Compared to robots and devices made of rigid components, soft robots and flexible devices driven by soft active materials possess various advantages including high adaptability under extreme environment and compatibility with a human. Dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane, which is commonly used in building soft actuators, can achieve large actuation by the combined loadings of voltage-induced Maxwell stress and fluidic pressures (pneumatic and hydraulic pressure). This paper proposes a pneumatic–hydraulic coupled electromechanical actuator (PHCEA), which exhibits strong coupling effect of electromechanical actuation (the Maxwell stress on DE membrane), pneumatic and hydraulic pressures. Considering the moving boundary and state transition, a computational model has been developed to investigate the coupling behaviors of the PHCEA. The numerical result by this model is in accordance with the experimental measurements. The combination of experimental data and the theoretical result indicates that the state transition and moving boundary separate the potential region of electrical breakdown and mechanical damage. This model can be utilized as a practical method to characterize the performance and guide the design of soft devices. The experimental setup and computational method of the PHCEA bring new insights into the fabrication and characterization of soft robots, adaptive optics, and flexible bio-medical devices. The PHCEA possesses wide applications in underwater robots, soft muscles, and microfluidics systems. It can serve as the gas bladder of soft swimming robots, the soft actuator of hydraulic–pneumatic coupling systems, and the gas–liquid valve of flexible microfluidics systems.

Abstract Dielectric elastomers are widely used in many fields due to their advantages of high deformability, light weight, biological compatibility, and high efficiency. In this study, the stochastic dynamic response and bifurcation of a dielectric elastomer balloon (DEB) with viscoelasticity are investigated. Firstly, the rheological model is adopted to describe the viscoelasticity of the DEB, and the dynamic model is deduced by using the free energy method. The effect of viscoelasticity on the state of equilibrium with static pressure and voltage is analysed. Then, the stochastic differential equation about the perturbation around the state of equilibrium is derived when the DEB is under random pressure and static voltage. The steady-state probability densities of the perturbation stretch ratio are determined by the generalized cell mapping method. The effects of parameter conditions on the mean value of the perturbation stretch ratio are calculated. Finally, sinusoidal voltage and random pressure are applied to the viscoelastic DEB, and the phenomenon of P-bifurcation is observed. Our results are compared with those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation to verify their accuracy. This work provides a potential theoretical reference for the design and application of DEs.

Abstract Dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators are deformable capacitors capable of a muscle-like actuation when charged. When subjected to voltage, DE membranes coated with compliant electrodes may form wrinkles due to the Maxwell stress. Here, we develop a numerical approach based on the finite element method (FEM) to predict the morphology of wrinkled DE membranes mounted on a rigid frame. The approach includes two steps, I) pre-buckling and II) post-buckling. In step I, the first buckling mode of the DE membrane is investigated by substituting the Maxwell stress with thermal stress in the built-in function of the FEM platform SIMULIA Abaqus. In step II, we use this first buckling mode as an artificial geometric imperfection to conduct the post-buckling analysis. For this purpose, we develop an equivalent model to simulate the mechanical behavior of DEs. Based on our approach, the thickness distribution and the thinnest site of the wrinkled DE membranes subjected to voltage are investigated. The simulations reveal that the crests/troughs of the wrinkles are the thinnest sites around the center of the membrane and corroborate these findings experimentally. Finally, we successfully predict the wrinkles of DE membranes mounted on an isosceles right triangle frame with various sizes of wrinkles generated simultaneously. These results shed light on the fundamental understanding of wrinkled dielectric elastomers but may also trigger new applications such as programmable wrinkles for optical devices or their prevention in DE actuators.
