Commercial Y2O3 powders were subjected to high energy ball milling in a planetary ball mill using high purity alumina balls and vial. The refined Y2O3 power ,with commercial high-purity Al2O3, Cr2O3 and Yb2O3 powders, were used as raw materials. Transparent ytterbium and chromium codoped yttrium aluminum garnet (Yb,Cr:YAG) ceramics were fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. The Yb,Cr:YAG ceramics exhibit a pore free structure and the average grain size is about 10 micron. The strong absorptions at 940 and 968 nm of Yb3+ are suitable for InGaAs diode laser pumping, and there is an absorption band at 1030 nm, which is suitable for passive Q-switch laser output at 1030 nm. Transparent Yb,Cr:YAG ceramics may be a potential material for compact, efficient, high-stability diode-laser-pumped passive Q-switched solid-state lasers.

Solid-state lasers have aroused many researchers’ interests for a variety of applications in military and industrial fields. Because of the preference for increased output power, Nd:YAG single crystals, which are the most widely used gain media, should be replaced by other more suitable candidates. Polycrystalline sesquioxide ceramics show great potential for use as gain media because their thermal and mechanical characteristics are suitable for use with high-energy laser systems. Recently, novel concepts of the gain media were also introduced. Herein, while briefly looking back on the progress of polycrystalline laser ceramics, we will discuss new interests in host materials and systems.

Development of high energy laser sources with nanosecond pulses at several hertz values for repetition rate has been very attractive in recent years due to their great potential for practical applications. With the recent advancement in fabricating large size laser quality transparent ceramics, diode pumped solid-state laser generating pulse energy of 100 J at 10 Hz has been recently realized at HiLASE center using Yb:YAG ceramic with Cr:YAG cladding. This review discusses Yb based high energy lasers, specific laser geometries for efficient thermal management and the role of transparent ceramics in such diode pumped high-energy-class solid-state lasers around the world.
