ABSTRACT The flat-spectrum radio quasar Ton 599 attained its highest ever γ-ray flux state during the first week of 2017 November. Observations of the source by the Swift satellite during this period made it possible to generate a simultaneous high flux state broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED). The high flux state activity of Ton 599 is modelled in this work for the first time. We modelled one high flux state and one quiescent state of the source in order to characterize the evolution of SEDs covering the entire dynamic range of γ-ray flux observed by Fermi-LAT. An attempt was made to model the 2017 November state of the source using an external Compton (EC) model in the leptonic scenario. We reproduce the broad-band flaring state SED using a two-component leptonic emission model. We considered one component as an EC+synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) component and the other as pure SSC, lying further down in the jet. The EC+SSC component was located outside the broad-line region (BLR). It mainly reproduces the GeV emission by an EC process with a dusty torus (DT) photon field providing seed photons. We reproduce the broad-band emission from Ton 599 satisfactorily during its peculiar flaring state with a leptonic two-component model. Besides this, we compare the model parameters of a quiescent-state SED with the available average state model parameters in the literature.

ABSTRACT Motivated by the alleged detection of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the X-ray spectrum of the Be-transient KS 1947+300 with NuSTAR, not observed with other observatories, we have revisited the available observations of the source to clarify the origin of the reported feature. We focus on the analysis of observations obtained with the BeppoSAX observatory during the 2001 outburst, and by NuSTAR in 2013, when the discovery of the line was reported. We find that in both cases, the source broad-band X-ray continuum can be well described with a two-component Comptonization model, which does not require an additional absorption-like feature. In addition, we show that low-significance residuals mimicking the line, which appear using different continuum models, are consistent with known calibration uncertainties. We therefore conclude that the reported cyclotron line detection is largely questionable, and thus the question on the strength of the source magnetic field remains open. We briefly discuss the origin of the observed broad-band continuum in the context of the pulse-phase-resolved analysis conducted for BeppoSAX data and speculate that the soft component may be associated with the emission from polar areas of the pulsar irradiated by the accretion column.

There are certain visual double stars which, when close to a node of their relative orbit, should have enough radial velocity difference (10-20 km/s) that the spectra of the two component stars will appear resolved on high-dispersion spectrograms (5 Å/mm or less) obtainable by use of modern coudé and solar spectrographs on bright stars. Both star images are then recorded simultaneously on the spectrograph slit, so that two stellar components will appear on each spectrogram.

Dutch-belted 1 to 2.5 kg anesthetized rabbits were exposed to either xenon or argon laser light administered in a broad band, designed to cover large areas of the retina. For laser exposure, the pupil was dilated with atropine sulfate 1% and pheny lephrine 10%. All of the laser generated power was within a band centered at 5145.0 Anstroms. Established threshold for 4 hour exposures to laser irradiation are in the order of 25-35 microwatts/cm2. Animals examined for ultrastructural changes received 4 hour threshold doses. These animals exhibited ERG, opthalmascopic, and histological changes consistent with threshold damage.One month following exposure the rabbits were killed with pentobarbitol. The eyes were immediately enucleated and dissected while bathed in 3% phosphate buffered gluteraldehyde.

The sensory end organ of the ear, the organ of Corti, rests on a thin basilar membrane which lies between the bone of the central modiolus and the bony wall of the cochlea. In vivo, the organ of Corti is protected by the bony wall which totally surrounds it. In order to examine the sensory epithelium by scanning electron microscopy it is necessary to dissect away the protective bone and expose the region of interest (Fig. 1). This leaves the fragile organ of Corti susceptible to physical damage during subsequent handling. In our laboratory cochlear specimens, after dissection, are routinely prepared by the O-T- O-T-O technique, critical point dried and then lightly sputter coated with gold. This processing involves considerable specimen handling including several hours on a rotator during which the organ of Corti is at risk of being physically damaged. The following procedure uses low cost, readily available materials to hold the specimen during processing ,preventing physical damage while allowing an unhindered exchange of fluids.Following fixation, the cochlea is dehydrated to 70% ethanol then dissected under ethanol to prevent air drying. The holder is prepared by punching a hole in the flexible snap cap of a Wheaton vial with a paper hole punch. A small amount of two component epoxy putty is well mixed then pushed through the hole in the cap. The putty on the inner cap is formed into a “cup” to hold the specimen (Fig. 2), the putty on the outside is smoothed into a “button” to give good attachment even when the cap is flexed during handling (Fig. 3). The cap is submerged in the 70% ethanol, the bone at the base of the cochlea is seated into the cup and the sides of the cup squeezed with forceps to grip it (Fig.4). Several types of epoxy putty have been tried, most are either soluble in ethanol to some degree or do not set in ethanol. The only putty we find successful is “DUROtm MASTERMENDtm Epoxy Extra Strength Ribbon” (Loctite Corp., Cleveland, Ohio), this is a blue and yellow ribbon which is kneaded to form a green putty, it is available at many hardware stores.

A transformer mixing network is described which allows the calibration of broad-band masking for portable audiometers that lack a built-in mixing network. For many instruments the transformer network is preferable to the resistive network previously published.
