Icing is a potentially hazardous weather events for aviation. Aircraft icing, as a rule, occurs as a result of the formation of ice on its surface at negative temperatures and high air humidity. Automated nowcasting system “Neva” implements a method for predicting aircraft icing zones based on radiometric measurements of atmospheric parameters. The results of nowcasting of icing zones in the area of the St. Petersburg airfield (Pulkovo) at heights up to 1 kilometer on the basis of remote measurements are presented. The accuracy of forecasting was verified using information on the actual icing cases according to the data of the aerodrome weather service, as well as the data of radio sounding at the Voeikovo aerological station. The high accuracy of forecasts and the icing warning rate are shown, as well as good agreement of the nowcating results with the Godske method generally used in operational practice. Evaluation of the quality of nowcasting shows to the prospects of using the automated system “Neva” for predicting aircraft icing zones on the base of radiometric measurements of atmospheric parameters. The forecasts obtained for the period from October 2018 to March 2020 in the Pulkovo airfield area feature high accuracy and warning rate, and the results largely coincide with the generally used method for forecasting aircraft icing zones (Godske method).

Icing/snowing/frosting is ubiquitous in nature and industrial processes, and the accretion of ice mostly leads to catastrophic consequences. The existing understanding of icing is still limited, particularly for aircraft icing, where direct observation of the freezing dynamics is inaccessible. In this work, we investigate experimentally the impact and freezing of a water drop onto the supercooled substrate at extremely low vapor pressure, to mimic an aircraft passing through clouds at a relatively high altitude, engendering icing upon collisions with pendant drops. Special attention is focused on the ice coverage induced by an impinging drop, from the perimeter pointing outward along the radial direction. We observed two freezing regimes: (I) spread-recoil-freeze at the substrate temperature of Ts = −15.4 ± 0.2 °C and (II) spread (incomplete)-freeze at the substrate temperature of Ts = −22.1 ± 0.2 °C. The ice coverage is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the frozen drop itself, and counterintuitively, larger supercooling yields smaller ice coverage in the range of interest. We attribute the variation of ice coverage to the kinetics of vapor diffusion in the two regimes. This fundamental understanding benefits the design of new anti-icing technologies for aircraft.

This study is an attempt to correlate VLF-EM data with the radiometric measurements to decipher the subsurface structure and to locate uranium mineralization in the shear zone. The study area is around Beldih mine which is an open cast apatite mine located on the South Purulia Shear Zone. VLF method has been applied to map the structure and the presence of radioactive minerals has been delineated by the detection of highαandγcounts with respect to the background radiations. High radiation counts and high surfaceγactivity are found just above the higher apparent current-density zones in all the profiles studied, at various locations, indicating uranium and/or thorium mineralization as well as good correlation between these techniques.
