The image quality is affected by the black luminance level of the image. This research aimed to investigate how low luminance levels are required to maintain image quality. The psychophysical experiment was carried out in a dark room using OLED display. Total of 6 different black luminance levels (0.003, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 1 cd/m2) were used in the experiment. Total of 20 participants was invited to evaluate the image quality. For the experiment, twelve test images are used and these test images categorized into three groups as dark, medium bright and bright image group by image histogram distribution. Each image is rendered by adjusting six different black luminance levels. Result found that the black level is higher than 0.1 cd/m2, the preference for the image is decreased. The best performance is achieved when the black level is 0.003 cd/m2, but there is no big difference from 0.1 cd/m2. The final result shows that a change in black level between about 0.003 cd/m2 and 0.1 cd/m2 does not significantly affect image quality.

How maintenance of orientation during locomotion in unfamiliar environments is accomplished was investigated by presenting subjects ( n = 32) a target in different locations in a dark room, having them walk linearly behind a moving light line (1.12 m/sec.), and from a stopping point 12 and 22.6 m away, numerically estimate direction and distance to the target. An equal number of subjects was assigned to each of 2 × 2 treatment levels: the starting point either visible or invisible from the stopping point and the target either visible only from the starting point or throughout each trial. In the conditions with invisible targets there were mainly negative effects of the visible starting point, partially the same as those previously obtained for a concurrent task during locomotion. The results suggested that maintenance of orientation is achieved by recurrent central processing of information, which if postponed leads to impaired performance mainly because forgetting occurs.

Experiment I. In pursuance to the Commands of his Honourable Society, Having a dark Room provided, the first Experiment was by drawing some Lines on a piece of blue Paper with the Phosphorus , which became immediately Luminous in the open Air, having a continual undulating Motion. This being plac'd under a Receiver, after some few Exclusions, the Undulation ceas'd, but the Luminous Quality appeared to be in a great measure increas'd; the Receiver being farther exaulted, it became manifestly brighter; and so continu'd, till on the Admission of Air (which was gradually done) the Light sensibly diminishing all the while. But upon the Repetition of the Experiment, it was the Opinion of those Gentlemen then present, that it did not appear altogether so brisk or so vivid as at first.

In 1880 George Eastman commenced the manufacture and sale of gelatin photographic dry plates in Rochester, New York. From that undertaking, the Eastman Kodak Company, incorporated as an American company in 1902, has developed. In 1912 Mr Eastman decided to organize a laboratory, independent of the factory laboratories, which should carry out work on both the science and practice of photography. He was influenced by his observation of the success of industrial research under Dr Whitney’s direction at the research laboratory of the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, U. S. A. and of the laboratories of the great German dye works. He had been particularly impressed by the work done by the Bayer Company at Elberfeld. In 1906 I had completed my thesis for the doctorate of science at University College, London, the subject being the theory of the photographic process, and had joined the old-established but very small firm of Wratten and Wainwright, Ltd., of Croydon as joint managing director. At Croydon both the conduct of research on photography and its application to the manufacture of photographic materials were continued actively, so that by 1912 many new materials had been introduced, especially panchromatic plates and the light filters and dark-room safe-lights required for their use; and the little firm was flourishing.
