Solar active regions are considered ‘anomalous’ when they belong to magnetic classes γ,βγ and βf-αf. The study of the solar activity of the region where, later on, these groups are born shows an evident correlation between the presence of an old active center and the complexity of the new active region.It is found that the complexity is greater if the old active center is younger, and the superposition better. We also observe that the birth of anomalous sunspots groups occurs much more frequently on the western side of the magnetic inversion line of the old center.When the birth of an active center occurs outside and on the West of the faculae, we observe the weakly anomalous groups βf-αf. The ‘perturbation’ decreases with distance and is extended at least to 10 heliographic degrees of the boundaries of the old faculae.

AbstractSolar activity in the latter half of 1996 was dominated by the presence of an extended filament channel in the southern hemisphere, forming a switchback configuration where it merged with the polar crown. Several large coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed to originate on or near this magnetic neutral line by the LASCO and EIT instruments on SOHO. As this channel gradually disappeared, a new, extended channel formed to the west of the old one, and this new channel also produced a number of large CMEs. We report here on observations of two events (December 23, 1996 and February 7,1997), and discuss the global nature of these events.

It is well-known that solar activity is basically caused by the Interaction of magnetic fields with convection and solar rotation, resulting in a great variety of dynamic phenomena, like flares, surges, sunspots, prominences, etc. Many conferences have been devoted to solar activity, including the role of magnetic fields. Similar attention has not been paid to the role of magnetic fields for the overall dynamics and energy balance of the solar atmosphere, related to the general problem of chromospheric and coronal heating. To penetrate this problem we have to focus our attention more on the physical conditions in the ‘quiet’ regions than on the conspicuous phenomena in active regions.

The following subjects were discussed:(1)Filament activation(2)Post-flare loops.(3)Surges and sprays.(4)Coronal transients.(5)Disk vs. limb observations.(6)Solar cycle variations of prominence occurrence.(7)Active prominences patrol service.Of all these items, (1) and (2) were discussed in most detail and we also pay most attention to them in this report. Items (3) and (4) did not bring anything new when compared with the earlier invited presentations given by RUST and ZIRIN and therefore, we omit them.

Approximately 60,000 tons per day of waste from taconite mining, tailing, are added to the west arm of Lake Superior at Silver Bay. Tailings contain nearly the same amount of quartz and amphibole asbestos, cummingtonite and actinolite in fibrous form. Cummingtonite fibres from 0.01μm in length have been found in the water supply for Minnesota municipalities.The purpose of the research work was to develop a method for asbestos fibre counts and identification in water and apply it for the enumeration of fibres in water samples collected(a) at various stations in Lake Superior at two depth: lm and at the bottom.(b) from various rivers in Lake Superior Drainage Basin.

In the West Nile District of Uganda lives a population of white rhino—those relies of a past age, cumbrous, gentle creatures despite their huge bulk—which estimates only 10 years ago, put at 500. But poachers live in the area, too, and official counts showed that white rhino were being reduced alarmingly. By 1959, they were believed to be diminished to 300.
