The network for monitoring the high-latitude ionosphere by the method of oblique ionospheric sounding deployed in the Russian Arctic region is considered. The study describes the main results of operational data processing for studying the high-latitude ionosphere and determining the conditions for the optimum operation of radio communication systems and over-the-horizon radars in this region. The study demonstrates the potential of the network as a tool for the remote diagnostics of parameters of small-scale artificial ionospheric irregularities induced by powerful HF radio waves in the mid-latitude ionospheric F-region.

Abstract. A new method of determining the anisotropy parameters of small-scale irregularities in the ionospheric F region is presented and experimental results are shown. The method is based on observations of amplitude fluctuations of radio waves transmitted by satellites flying above the F region. In practice, Russian navigational satellites are used and both the amplitude and the phase of the received signal is measured on the ground level. The method determines both the field-aligned anisotropy and the field-perpendicular anisotropy and orientation of the spatial spectrum of the irregularities, assuming that the contours of constant power have an elliptic shape. A possibility of applying the method to amplitude tomography is also discussed. Using a chain of receivers on the ground level, one could locate the regions of small-scale irregularities as well as determine their relative intensities. Then the large-scale background structures could be mapped simultaneously by means of ordinary ray tomography using the phase observations, and therefore the relations of small-scale and large-scale structures could be investigated.Key words. Abstract. The large-scale high-latitude F-region modification by high power radio waves is investigated using a numerical model of the convecting high-latitude ionosphere developed earlier. Simulations are performed for the point with geographic coordinates of the ionospheric heater near Tromsø, Scandinavia for autumn conditions. The calculations are made for distinct cases, in which high power waves have different frequencies, both for nocturnal and for day-time conditions. The results of modeling indicate that the frequency of HF waves ought to influence significantly the large-scale F-region modification by high power radio waves in the high-latitude ionosphere.Key words. A high-frequency a high-power GaN HEMT was analyzed using our full band Cellular Monte Carlo (CMC) simulator, in order to extract small signal parameters and figures of merit, and to correlate them to carrier dynamics and distribution inside the device. A complete RF and DC characterization of the device was performed using experimental data to calibrate the few adjustable parameters of the simulator. Then, gate-related capacitances, such as Cg, Cgd, and Cgs, were directly and indirectly extracted combining small-signal analysis and DC characterization.
