AbstractThe present contribution deals with the taxonomy of seven species of perisphinctoid ammonite from the Štramberk Limestone (Outer Western Carpathians, Czech Republic) deposited in Moravian-Silesian museums. The age of these studied ammonites is compared with that of index microfossils contained in the matrix adhering to or infilling the studied specimens. The ammonites document a stratigraphic range from earliest Tithonian to early Berriasian. In addition to taxonomy and new ontogenetic data on some species, we also present data on their palaeogeographic distribution. The occurrence of Subboreal himalayitids in the Štramberk Limestone of an early Berriasian age is determined by both the microfauna and accompanying ammonites, which indicate connection of the Silesian-part of the Tethyan Carpathian area with the Subboreal Russian Platform Basin. These records also suggest an early Berriasian age (Jacobi Chron) for the lowermost part of the Ryazanian stage in its type area.

Abstract. Fusulinid faunas of the Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian–Moscovian) deposits of the Siyah Aladag Nappe were investigated from the Kuzuoluk section located in the eastern Taurides. The section is represented by grey, occasionally laminated, algal and fusulinid-rich limestones. The foraminiferal faunas of the Kuzuoluk section are very diverse and abundant which allows identification of the Bashkirian–Moscovian boundary by index-species such as Verella spicata and Aljutovella aljutovica. Other key taxa in the Bashkirian–Moscovian interval include Pseudostaffella grandis and Staffellaeformes staffellaeformis (Bashkirian Stage, upper part of the Lower Substage), Ozawainella pararhomboidalis and Staffellaeformes bona (Bashkirian Stage, Upper Substage), Verella spicata (Bashkirian Stage, Upper Substage) and Aljutovella aljutovica Zones (Moscovian Stage, Lower Substage). The Bashkirian–Moscovian microfaunas from the Kuzuoluk section can be correlated with assemblages from Tien-Shan, the Southern Urals and the Russian Platform.

Abstract. Bollen and colleagues have advocated the use of formative scales despite the fact that formative scales lack an adequate underlying theory to guide development or validation such as that which underlies reflective scales. Three conceptual impediments impede the development of such theory: the redefinition of measurement restricted to the context of model fitting, the inscrutable notion of conceptual unity, and a systematic conflation of item scores with attributes. Setting aside these impediments opens the door to progress in developing the needed theory to support formative scale use. A broader perspective facilitates consideration of standard scale development concerns as applied to formative scales including scale development, item analysis, reliability, and item bias. While formative scales require a different pattern of emphasis, all five of the traditional sources of validity evidence apply to formative scales. Responsible use of formative scales requires greater attention to developing the requisite underlying theory.

The distribution of certain pelagic Amphipoda taken in the Belle Isle strait region during the summer of 1923 is correlated with ocean currents, light intensity and size of individuals. Hyperoche medusarum, Themisto libellula and Pseudalibrotus glacialis are index species of the cold Labrador current in the area. Hyperia galba and H. medusarum are presumably also cold water indicators. Themisto abyssorum in sizeable numbers, and Calliopius laeviusculus are related to waters of the gulf of St. Lawrence. Themisto libellula, T. compressa form compressa and T. compressa form bispinosa are more numerous, while T. abyssorum is less numerous at the surface during daylight than during darkness. Part of the breeding season of T. compressa and T. abyssorum occurs in the area during August and September, when the young of both species are much more numerous than the adults, particularly at the surface. A new southern limit of distribution for P. glacialis is established. The known distribution of the tropical genus Phronima is extended into the gulf of St. Lawrence.
