AbstractIt is widely held that disorder is essential to the existence of a finite interval of magnetic field in which the Hall conductance is quantized, i.e., for the existence of “plateaus” in the quantum Hall effect. Here, we show that the existence of a quasi-particle Wigner crystal (QPWC) results in the persistence of plateaus of finite extent even in the limit of vanishing disorder. Several experimentally detectable features that characterize the behavior in the zero disorder limit are also explored.

A method is presented in the scheme of the boson approximation such that the antisymmetry between the quasi-particles is introduced naturally. Based on the transcription of the quasi-particle into the ideal space, the method enables one to give a unified description of the anharmonic corrections in the even–even and odd spherical nuclei.

ABSTRACTWe apply the Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian to study many-electron excitations in polyenes and polyacetylene. The excited singlet states of polyenes, calculated by a multireference double excitation expansion, are classified as quasi-particle excitations, namely as triplet-triplet magnons and particle-hole excitons. From finite polyene spectra we derive approximate dispersion relations for these quasi-particles in the infinite polyene, i.e. polyacetylene.
