A 15-year-old boy with intractable, active rheumatic carditis underwent open heart sungery to repair severe aortic and mital insufficiency. His dramatic recovery suggests that this unorthodox approach should be considered in the management of such patients when the usual medical regime of digitalis diuretics, aspirin, and steroids have failed.
