The use of brain natriuretic peptide biomarkers is often cited in guidelines for heart failure as part of diagnostic pathways for patients with suspected heart failure. The biomarker result helps clinicians to decide whether a patient goes on for transthoracic echocardiography. This article reviews the use and usefulness of these biomarkers in a district general hospital and its impact on patients admitted with suspected heart failure. For those considering its use, this paper may offer some insights into how to implement such tests for acute inpatients.
