The preparation of N-chloro-Δ1-4-azasteroids 2a–2c from lactams 1a–1c was achieved conveniently and in high yield with trichloroisocyanuric acid. The treatment of 20β-hydroxy-4-aza-5α-pregn-1-en-3-one (1d) with this reagent produced the less stable N-chloro compound 2d, which reacted further to afford 4-aza-5α-pregn-1-en-3,20-dione (4) as the principal product. The similar chlorination of 4-azacholest-5-en-3-one (5) occurred at C-6, giving 6-chloro-4-azacholest-5-en-3-one (6). Photolysis of N-chloro-4-aza-5α-cholest-1-en-3-one (2a) in methanol produced the transient N-acyl imine 7, which was trapped by the solvent to afford 5-methoxy-4-azacholest-1-en-3-one (8), along with 4-azacholesta-1,5-dien-3-one (9) and its 6-chloro derivative 10. Key words: N-chloroazasteroid, Δ1-4-azasteroid, N-chloro-Δ1-4-azasteroid, trichloroisocyanuric acid, N-chlorination.

The relative effectiveness of Zn-sulphate (ZnS), Zn-EDTA (ZnE), low-yield ammonium-based lignosulphonate (ZnLY) and high-yield sodium-based lignosulphonate (ZnHY) for bean production was tested in growth chamber and incubation experiments. ZnS and ZnLY were more effective than ZnE and ZnHY in correcting Zn deficiency of bean plants. While biomass production was best with ZnS, ZnLY was more effective in increasing Zn-content in the foliage and in the formation of strong chelates in the soil. Key words: Zn-sulfate, Zn-EDTA, lignosulphonate, spent sulphite liquor, sulphite pulping

OAC Paisley is a high yielding, lodging resistant, covered oat developed at the Crop Science Department, OAC, University of Guelph. OAC Paisley was selected from the cross of Ogle/OA630-2. It has outyielded the check cultivars over 29 station-years of testing in Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Region. OAC Paisley is well adapted to all of Eastern Canada. It has resistance to BYDV and good tolerance to septoria, but is susceptible to crown rust. It should fit well into barley-oat mixtures due to its early maturity and lodging resistance. Key words: Avena sativa L., high yield, lodging resistance, BYDV, septoria

Morrison is a two-rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar developed by the Plant Research Centre, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa. It was selected from a Rodeo/Gitane cross. Morrison has high yield, high test weight, large kernels, good lodging resistance and a high degree of resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis D.C.). It is suitable for growing in Eastern Canada. Key words: Hordeum vulgare L., two-rowed barley, feed barley, high yield

Dimethyltrichlorophosphorane reacts with methylamine hydrochloride to give an oil which decomposes on heating, yielding the quaternary chloride N3P3Me6·MeCl as the principal product. The controlled pyrolysis of this salt gives N3P3Me6 in high yield. A simple method for the separation of N3P3Me6 and N4P4Me8 is described, based on the different solubilities of their salts in acetonitrile.

The 6H-oxathiazines 1a-e having imine moiety underwent [2+2] cycloaddition with phenoxyacetylchloride in the presence of Et3N to give β-lactam derivatives 2a-e in high yield. The X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed the relative stereochemistry that the substituents at C-2 and C-4 were cis configurated. The subtituents at C-6 and C-7 were also cis to each other. However, the 6H-oxathiazines 1f-i containing tert-butyl or methyl group at C-4 did not undergo the cycloaddition.
