Fritzsch-like Hermitian quark mass matrices with decoupled u quark as well as nonzero 22-elements, both in ‘U’ and ‘D’ sectors, have been considered to reconcile the data regarding [Formula: see text] and CKM matrix elements. Exploiting the idea of maximality of CP-violation, we find two interesting relations between CKM matrix elements, viz. |Vtd|≅ |Vus||Vcb|, |Vub|≅ ½(ms/ mb)|Vus|. Apart from obtaining 0.05≤|Vub/Vcb|≤0.12 and [Formula: see text], we find CP-violating rephasing invariant parameter |J|≅(3–5)×10−5. The predicted |Vtd| value implies almost maximal mixing in [Formula: see text] system.

The CKM-matrix V is written as a linear combination of the unit matrix I and a matrix U which causes intergenerational-mixing. It is shown that such a V results from a class of quark-mass matrices. The matrix U has to be Hermitian and unitary and therefore can depend at most on four real parameters. The available data on the CKM-matrix including CP-violation can be reproduced by [Formula: see text]. This is also true for the special case when U depends on only 2 real parameters. Also, for such a V the invariant phase Φ≡ϕ12+ϕ23-ϕ13, satisfies a criterion suggested for "maximal" CP-violation.

The Jarlskog rephasing invariant parameter |J| is evaluated using one of the six unitarity triangles involving well-known CKM matrix elements |Vud|, |Vus|, |Vub/Vcb|, |Vcd|, |Vcs|, and |Vcb|. With PDG2000 values of |Vud| etc. as input, we obtain |J|= (2.71±1.12)×10-5, which in the PDG representation of CKM matrix leads to the range 21° to 159° for the CP violating phase δ. The CKM matrix elements evaluated using this range of δ are in agreement with the PDG CKM matrix. The implications of refinements in the input on |J|, δ and CKM matrix elements have also been studied.

A simple ansatz for quark mass matrices which yields the Kac–Moody (KM) matrix elements, [Formula: see text], Vcb = ms/mb, and [Formula: see text], is investigated, resulting in two empirical identities, md/ms = ms/mb and mu/mc = mc/mt. Using Vub = 0.004 ± 0.002, we obtain mt = (290 ± 140) GeV . We find that this prediction is consistent with other processes, such as [Formula: see text] mixing. The invariant quantity, J, of CP violation is of the order 3 × 10−5 in agreement with experiments.

Implications of texture specific mass matrices have been investigated for both quarks and neutrinos. Interestingly, for the case of quarks Fritzsch-like texture 4 zero mass matrices have been found to be compatible with the present precisely known sin 2β as well as other precise CKM matrix elements. In the case of leptonic mass matrices, for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos we find that for texture 4, 5, 6 zero mass matrices the inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenarios of neutrino masses are ruled out by the present data.

Maximality of CP-violation is defined by maximizing the Jarlskog rephasing invariant |J| which is twice the area of any of the six unitarity triangles. When the area of two of the unitarity triangles is maximized w.r.t.|Vtd|, we obtain |Vtd|=(8.5-10.2)×10-3 and CP violating phase δ=60°-168°. Two well-known triangles yield J expt =(2.2-3.7)×10-5 which leads to δ = 33°-146° and |Vtd|=(5.6-13.1)×10-3. When the constraints due to "maximality" and J expt are considered simultaneously, we obtain |Vtd|=(8.5-10.2)×10-3 and δ=60°-136°.
