By adjusting the oxidation voltage, electrolyte, anodizing time and other parameters, TiO2 nanotubes with high aspect ratio can be prepared by oxidation in organic system because anodic oxidation method has the advantage of simple preparation process, low material cost and controllable morphology. This review focusses on the influence of anodizing parameters on the morphology of TiO2 nanotube arrays prepared by anodizing. In order to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes under visible light and to prolong the life of photo-generated carriers, the research status of improving the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes in recent years is reviewed. This review focusses on the preparation and modification of TiO2 nanotubes by anodic oxidation, which is helpful to understand the best structure of TiO2 nanotubes and the appropriate modification methods, thus guiding the application of TiO2 nanotubes in practical photocatalysis. Finally, the development of TiO2 nanotubes is prospected.

Highly ordered nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (N-doped TiO2) nanotube arrays were prepared by anodic oxidation method and then annealed in a N2atmosphere to obtain N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays. The samples were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis) spectrum. Degradation of the insecticide acephate under the visible light was used as a model to examine the visible-light photocatalytic activity of N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays. The results show that N type doping has no notable effects on the morphology and structure of TiO2nanotube arrays. After N type doping, the N replaces a small amount of O in TiO2, forming an N–Ti–O structure. This shifts the optical absorption edge and enhances absorption of the visible light. N-doped TiO2nanotube arrays subjected to annealing at 500°C in N2atmosphere show the strongest photocatalytic activity and reach a degradation rate of 84% within 2 h.

Titania nanotube arrays were fabricated by anodic oxidation of a pure titanium foil. The morphology, structure and optical properties of the nanotube arrays were characterized by SEM, XRD and UV-Vis spectrum. The effect of anodic oxidation parameters on the morphology was investigated. The growth mechanism of the titania nanotube arrays was discussed. The results show that the vertical oriented TiO2 nanotube arrays can be obtained at 20V for 60min in 0.5wt%HF+1mol/L H3PO4 solution. The aperture size of nanotube is 60nm~80nm and the thickness of tube wall is about 10nm. The spectral absorptivity of TiO2 nanotube arrays membrane calcined at 600°C towards ultravlolet light 349.7nm and visible light 443.9nm was relatively higher. It is also found that the crystal structure is greatly affected by calcining temperature.
