Abstract Health care delivery processes consist of complex activity sequences spanning organizational, spatial, and temporal boundaries. Care is human-directed so these processes can have wide variations in cost, quality, and outcome making systemic care process analysis, conformance testing, and improvement challenging. We designed and developed an interactive visual analytic process exploration and discovery tool and used it to explore clinical data from 5784 pediatric asthma emergency department patients.

BACKGROUND One of the problems in evaluating clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) is the occurrence of knowledge gaps. These gaps may occur when evaluation logics and definitions in analytics pipelines are translated differently. OBJECTIVE The objective of this paper is to develop a systematic method that will fill in the cognitive and computational gaps of CPG knowledge components in analytics pipelines. METHODS We used locally developed CPGs that resulted in care process models (CPMs). We derived adherence definitions from the CPMs, transformed them into computationally executable queries, and deployed them into an enterprise knowledge base that specializes in managing clinical knowledge content. We developed a visual analytics framework, whose data pipelines are connected to queries in the knowledge base, to automate the extraction of data from clinical databases and calculation of evaluation metrics. RESULTS In this pilot study, we implemented 21 CPMs within the proposed framework, which is connected to an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) as a data source. We built a Web–based dashboard for monitoring and evaluating adherence to the CPMs. The dashboard ran for 18 months during which CPM adherence definitions were updated a number of times. CONCLUSIONS The proposed framework was demonstrated to accommodate complicated knowledge management for CPM adherence evaluation in analytics pipelines using a knowledge base. At the same time, knowledge consistency and computational efficiency were maintained.

This paper invites readers to consider how the ideals, concepts, and language of nutrition justice may be incorporated into the everyday practice of clinical dietitians whose work is often carried out within large, conservative, primary care institutions. How might clinical dietitians address the nutritional injustices that bring people to their practice, when practitioners are constrained by the limits of current diagnostic language, as well as the exigencies of their workplaces. In the first part of this paper, I draw on Cadieux and Slocum’s work on food justice to develop a conceptual framework for nutrition justice. I assert that a justice-oriented understanding of nutrition redresses inequities built in to the biomedicalization of nutrition and health, and seeks to trouble by whom and how these are defined. In the second part of this paper, I draw on the conceptual framework of nutrition justice to develop a politicized language framework that articulates nutrition problems as the outcome of nutritional injustices rather than individuals’ deficits of knowledge, willingness to change, or available resources. This language framework serves as a counterpoint to the current and widely accepted clinical language tool, the Nutrition Care Process Terminology, that exemplifies biomedicalized understandings of nutrition and health. Together, I propose that the conceptual and language frameworks I develop in this paper work together to foster what Croom and Kortegast (2018) call “critical professional praxis” within dietetics.

Abstract In a prequalification effort to evaluate the assembly process for the industrial grade high pin count devices for use in a high reliability application, one device exhibited characteristics that, without corrective actions and/or extensive screening, may lead to intermittent system failures and unacceptable reliability. Five methodologies confirmed this conclusion: (1) low post-decapsulation wire pull results; (2) bond shape analysis showed process variation; (3) Failure Analysis (FA) using state of the art equipment determined the root causes and verified the low wire pull results; (4) temperature cycling parts while monitoring, showed intermittent failures, and (5) parts tested from other vendors using the same techniques passed all limits.
