Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how young residents in two Indonesian kampungs (urban informal settlements) participate in two grassroots art festivals and to what extent their participation affects their capacity and network. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a qualitative method. The data collection were done in 2017 and took the form of in-depth semi-structured interviews with 15 respondents in two kampungs, Kampung Dago Pojok, Bandung, and Kampung Bustaman, Semarang. Findings The results show that the grassroots festival can empower youth throughout its process while also influencing their networks. The festival could act as the catalyst for youth to gain event management skills and exchange cultural knowledge. This study also found that there are two sides the art festivals can bring to the youth regarding their network: while the festival was able to develop their internal and external network, it also led to social division within the community. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in the context of the research where it contributes to understanding the implications of community-based art festivals in the developing context, particularly in the low-income informal settlements. The paper’s content also provides insights that festivals can also be understood as more than place marketing or branding but as collections of steps and efforts of the community to provide meaningful actions for their place and people.

Events have played a significant role in the way in which the Coronavirus pandemic has been experienced and known around the world. Little is known though about how the pandemic has impacted on supporting, managing and governing events in municipal (i.e., local) authorities as key stakeholders, nor how events have featured in the opening-up of localities. This paper reports on empirical research with senior events officers for local authorities in the UK on these key knowledge gaps. Specifically, it examines events officers' unfolding experiences of the pandemic. The paper points to unpreparedness for a crisis of this scale and magnitude, and the roles of innovation, adaptation and co-production in the emergent response. It highlights the transformative nature of the pandemic through reconsiderations of the purpose of public sector involvement in events and, from a policy perspective, how relatively smaller-scale, more agile and lower-risk arts events and performances can figure in local recovery. Finally, while the effects on, and response of, the body corporate (the local authority) to crises is an obvious focus, it is important to recognise those of the individuals who manage the response and drive change.

This paper provides an in-depth study and analysis of the optimization of sports event management systems using wireless sensor networks. Aiming at the monitoring task of a directed wireless sensor network in a three-dimensional environment, the directed sensing nodes scattered inside the designated monitoring area in a random deployment manner usually have uneven distribution and other problems; we analyze the characteristics of the directed sensor nodes, probabilistic sensing model, and the cooperative sensing model of multiple sensor nodes for monitoring target points and propose a sensing optimization strategy in polar coordinates to guide the three-dimensional plane directed orientation adjustment and sensing optimization of sensor nodes, thus enhancing the sensing capability of network nodes. The experimental results confirm that the algorithm can improve the coverage of the area to be monitored and the quality of sensing service, and it reduces the overall energy consumption of the network by using the distributed node synchronization scheduling mechanism to extend the life cycle of the network to maintain good monitoring capability under the premise of the limited total usage of the directed nodes in wireless sensor networks. The application of wireless sensor network technology in sports competition management mainly includes the application of smart wearable devices in sports competition training, the application of goal-line technology in sports competition, and the application of eagle eye technology in sports events, all three technologies have certain advantages in the application of sports competition, and all of their help to promote the improvement of sports event management and the development of sports industry; the second aspect is wireless sensor. The second aspect is the application of wireless sensor network technology in sports event information management, which is mainly used to collect information related to sports events and fully utilize it to make sports event management more informative and digital, which is helpful to improve the level of sports event management; the third aspect is the application of wireless sensor network technology in sports event stadium management, which is mainly based on intelligent stadiums to create a more spectator-friendly and good experience for the audience, a more ornamental and good experience viewing place, to promote the development and growth of sports industry.

Sustainable development has become one of the strategic issues in the tourism industry. Sustainability is an action that combines environmental, sociocultural, and economic concepts. The tourism industry has had good benefits on economic and social growth. Still, if it is not adequately planned and managed, it can have harmful consequences on the environment. This research aims to present a sustainable development strategy for Palu Bay Marine Tourism following a natural disaster. The A'WOT hybrid method (AHP-SWOT) was used to achieve the research objectives. The A'WOT method is a combination of a SWOT analysis and the AHP method. This research was done on Palu Bay tourism, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This research resulted in a sustainable development strategy for Palu Bay tourism related to the diversity of products and improvement of event management, an improved image of Palu Bay tourism, improvement in the visitor management system to minimize environmental impacts, and efficient and effective promotion and branding.   Received: 14 October 2021 / Accepted: 29 November 2021 / Published: 3 January 2022

Event design is an important aspect of planned events, and events have the power to transform individuals. An emerging focus in event design is the focus on meanings and event experiences (Getz & Page, 2016). Event design, a core ‘domain’ or function of event management offers the potential to achieve, or at least facilitate these transformations. The emergence of the so-called transformation economy has been at least partly responsible for a movement in the focus of planned events beyond extraordinary experiences towards experiences that could be regarded as transformative or even life-changing. Described as peak experiences, these transformational events have important implications for event design.

The term ‘event marketing’ has been used in a range of different ways and given a range of different meanings. While all of these meanings may be appropriate in various contexts, the term utilized in this chapter refers to that part of the event management process that involves the marketing of events and hence, to the market research, promotion and advertising that aims at increasing the number of customers that pay to attend the event. The American Marketing Association defines marketing as “the set of activities, institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large” (www.ama.org). In this vein, event marketing includes the activities, tactics and tools used to communicate and promote the value of events to prospective attendees.

A critical determinant of successful event management is the capacity to predict and monitor event costs and revenues. Cost blow-outs or lower than expected revenues can significantly impact an event’s financial performance, turn an anticipated profit into a loss, create major cash flow problems, and impair the financial health of an events business.

The aim of this paper is to highlight the essence and features of the skill of the host of the event project, as well as to clarify the concept of “image” as a component in creating an individual image of the host in order to succeed in career growth, communication with the audience. Topicality. With the development of the creative industry and the expansion of various forms and types of art projects and shows, there is a growing need for professional presenters who must have brilliant skills of communication with the audience and improvisation, behavior, personal image improvement. Therefore, the skill of the presenter constantly needs to improve and master new opportunities, both personal and professional. It is here that you can see the relevance of this research topic. Research methodology The purpose and objectives of this study determine a comprehensive approach to the choice of research methods. The main ones are: observation, which helped to analyze the moral and ethical aspects of the image of the host of events; comparison of requirements for professional leaders of other categories. The historical method is used to analyze phenomena in the process of their occurrence and in the dynamics of the development of the art of entertaining. A systematic approach to the study made it possible to comprehensively consider the phenomenon of leading events. Results. Several categories of presenters are considered, which differ from each other in style and genre of work, personality of the image and the audience to which the presenter’s attention is directly directed. The work of the entertainer as the main chain in the concert program is analyzed. It is determined that not only personal characteristics are needed for the formation of components, namely: image — external: hairstyle, appearance, clothing, cosmetics, etc., internal: character, attitude to work, attitude to the professional level, etc. It is proved that the conference is divided into five parts, namely: introduction, business news, interludes, the host’s own number and the end of the conference and concert. It was found that a specific feature of the host’s work is the ability to conduct interesting and dynamic competitions-games with the audience. It is noted that high-quality event management depends on good work and skill of the presenter, because the working conditions and performance of tasks, sometimes leads to an integral part of the competence. Novelty. The scientific novelty of the research is the expansion of ideas about the specifics of the work of a presenter in the field of modern performing arts.
