Is the Christian woman mystic's audacious desire for union with God a sign of a very un-Christian pride? How can medieval women, officially denied access to teaching and preaching, speak authoritatively on religious issues while at the same time maintaining the humility expected of them? The paper explores both popular and scholarly claims about Christian women mystics' narcissism and argues that, properly understood, many mystical texts are grounded in a paradoxical interplay of humility and chosenness by means of which the works purport to authorize themselves.

This article examines religious and gendered identities through an ethnographic study of unmarried evangelical Christian women in London. Moving away from an approach that shows that women feel empowered through their conservative, male-dominated religious environment, or else they find it constraining and leave the church, this article investigates the experiences of women who feel limited by their church, and still remain embedded in their Christian environment. The article begins by exploring the normative figure of the ideal Christian woman operative in this context. It then describes the experiences of women who do not fit the norm, outlining the affective toll they suffer through marginality. Finally, the article examines how some women rely on hope in order to change the normative framework within their church. This article argues that leaving and staying are not static categories; instead evangelical women, frustrated with their marginal positions, revealed a continuum of investment underlain by resilience and hope.

AbstractBernardino de Ávila’s Relación del Reyno del Nippon is the only secular Spanish account of the martyrdoms of Nagasaki that took place between 1614 and 1619. Opening as a depiction of Japanese history and society, Ávila’s portrait of Japanese women develops from the admiration of physical beauty and marital qualities to the praise of female courage during the persecution of Christians. Whether narrating events he witnessed or copying and reinterpreting European missionaries’ texts or Japanese Christians’ reports, Ávila creates the idea of heroic wives and virgins who endure torture and martyrdom without apostatizing. As a layman, his interpretation of the events lacks the deep knowledge of learned churchmen, yet his narrative adds the point of view of a commoner who struggled to live and understand the failure of Christendom in kingdoms not ruled by Spain. The article analyzes the development of the representation of Japanese women in Ávila’s work and the influence of religious writing in his narrative.

The unique career counseling needs of traditional evangelical Christian women at midlife are seen as precipitating from two circumstances: (a) children reaching school age and/or (b) husbands undergoing midlife crises which threaten their marriages. The rationale for choosing a Christian versus secular counselor is discussed, along with ways to adapt conventional secular counseling strategies and tools to accommodate evangelical values. Suggestions for motivating clients biblically are offered Problems addressed include phases of counseling, guilt issues, family concerns, and financial considerations. A decision-making model that emphasizes the centrality of values and a “change agent” approach to barriers is advocated.

Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) composed “The Education of a Christian Woman” in order to cement his patronage relations with the Queen of England, Catherine of Aragon and to lay the foundations of his own social thought. Scholars have been divided about the extent to which the work may be regarded as conservative, this article points to those areas of textual tension that give rise to contradictory evaluations of “The Education”. The essay analyses the use of pagan, Christian and contemporary exempla in order to demonstrate that Vives formulates a bourgeois notion of marriage which he wishes to impose on aristocratic women. His attacks on court life, the emphasis on frugality and the diatribes against conspicuous consumption lend support to a view of a women remaining invisible in the home. A queen is the test case for such an assessment and Vives attempts to diminish her autonomy as far as possible.
