Hemiphractidae contains five genera (Frost 2011; Duellman et al. 2011), of which Gastrotheca Fitzinger is the most diverse with 60 species in Central and South America. Eight species of Gastrotheca occur in eastern and southeastern Brazil (Izecksohn et al. 2009; Frost 2011). According to Caramaschi and Rodrigues (2007) a comprehensive analyses of phylogenetic relationships between species of Gastrotheca from the Atlantic Rain Forest of Brazil still remains to be done. Thus, they separated the species of this genus in three phenetic assemblages, of which Gastrotheca fissipes is placed alone in a group. According to Duellman (1984) the distribution of Gastrotheca fissipes ranges from the state of Pernambuco to Espírito Santo. Recently, Izeckson et al. (2009) suggested that the species formerly known as G. fissipes represented two distinct species. They described G. megacephala as a new species occurring from Espírito Santo to southern Bahia and restricted G. fissipes to occur only at the type locality, Igarassú, Pernambuco. In the present study we describe the advertisement call of G. fissipes and compare it with the advertisement call of G. megacephala. Additionally we provide new data on its geographical distribution.

A new species of Trachycephalus is described from the Araucaria plateau of northern Rio Grande do Sul and western Santa Catarina states, southern Brazil, where it occurs in forests from about 550 to 950 m a.s.l. The new species was previously confused with T. imitatrix and might also occur in adjacent regions of Paraná state and Misiones province, Argentina. It is a large sized hylid (mean SVL 77.6 mm in females, 57.2 mm in males) with greenish to olive or brown dorsal coloration in life, conspicuous dorsal pattern of dark ocelli and spots, and broad, black and white-edged transverse bands on limbs. The yellow iris has a characteristic black reticulated pattern forming a radial symmetric network of four light, petal-like spots. The advertisement call consists of a long series of multi-pulsed notes with duration between 470– 760 ms, note intervals between 0.8–3.0 s and note repetition rates of 24–36 per s. The dominant frequency spectrum ranges between 1100 and 1800 Hz, with a peak at about 1550 Hz.

Abstract— A new species of Phyllanthus with phylloclades endemic to the State of Bahia is described here. Phyllanthus dracaenoides can be recognized for its peculiar habit that resembles a species of Dracaena, a very unusual height of up to 7 m, the plagiotropic phylloclades spirally arranged, and its vermiform cincinni. Notes on its habitat, taxonomic affinity, conservation status, geographic distribution, illustrations, and photographs are provided.

The genusScinaxis one of the most specious genera of treefrogs of the family Hylidae. Despite the high number of potential new species ofScinaxrevealed in recent studies, the rate of species descriptions for Amazonia has been low in the last decade. A potential cause of this low rate may be the existence of morphologically cryptic species. Describing new species may not only impact the taxonomy and systematics of a group of organisms but also benefit other fields of biology. Ecological studies conducted in megadiverse regions, such as Amazonia, often meet challenging questions concerning insufficient knowledge of organismal alpha taxonomy. Due to that, detecting species-habitat associations is dependent on our ability to properly identify species. In this study, we first provide a description of a new species (including its tadpoles) of the genusScinaxdistributed along heterogeneous landscapes in southern Amazonia; and secondly assess the influence of environmental heterogeneity on the new species’ abundance and distribution.Scinax ruberoculatussp. nov. differs from all nominal congeners by its small size (SVL 22.6–25.9 mm in males and 25.4–27.5 mm in females), by having a dark brown spot on the head and scapular region shaped mainly like the mothCopiopteryx semiramis(or a human molar in lateral view, or a triangle), bicolored reddish and grey iris, snout truncate in dorsal view, bilobate vocal sac in males, by its advertisement call consisting of a single pulsed note with duration of 0.134–0.331 s, 10–23 pulses per note, and dominant frequency 1,809–1,895 Hz. Both occurrence and abundance of the new species are significantly influenced by silt content in the soil. This finding brings the first evidence that edaphic factors influence species-habitat association in Amazonian aquatic breeding frogs.

We describe a new species of tree frog of the Scinax ruber clade from rocky field mountains in the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais in central and southeastern Brazil. Scinax rogerioi sp. nov. is characterized by medium size (SVL males 25.0–35.6 mm; females 28.0–34.5 mm); snout protruding in lateral view and almost subovoid in dorsal view; loreal region concave; adhesive discs on fingers medium-sized, wider than long; interrupted, irregular dark brown blotches on dorsum from behind eyes to inguinal region from head to inguinal region; inverted brown triangular interocular blotch; brown spot in loreal region; advertisement call is a multipulsed note, with 6 to 12 pulses (interval between pulses 0.02 to 0.03s), and a dominant frequency of 1.38 to 3.19 kHz. Description of the advertisement call and data on natural history are provided.
