The Breeding System of the Three-Spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus Aculeatus (Forma Leiura) With Reference To Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Nesting Activity

Abstract1) The breeding succes of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L., forma leiura) males in a small stream of the Tsuya River, Gifu Prefecture, Central Japan, was studied with reference to timing of nesting initiation, use of space for nesting and social interactions. The observations were made almost daily during March to early July 1988 along the shore at a distance of 1-2 m from the fish and nests. 2) All the males in an enclosed study pool were individually marked (99 males). Furthermore, a total of 67 females were marked and observed weekly. The males were individually observed and their agonistic, courtship and parental behaviour as well as their reproductive success were quantified. Reproductive success of individual male was measured as the number of nests built, the number of successful nests, the number of hatched fry per nest. Nest sites were categorized in six types (A-F) on the basis of the proportion of vegetation cover around the nest and distance from the shore. 3) Body size and environmental factors (water temperature, water depth, changes in water level) were not correlated with reproductive success. Flooding was not a major cause of unsuccessful nesting. The brightness of nuptial colouration at the onset of breeding correlated significantly with individual success. Individual variation in the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as a nuptial colouration may have an important consequence for the lifetime reproductive success of the individuals. There was no relationship between fish density and reproductive success. 4) All males that nested more than once had begun breeding early in the season. The sooner a male started nest-building, the more opportunities he had to complete breeding cycles. 5) After an unsuccessful nest, males were significantly more likely to move their nest sites than after a successful nest. The subsequent nesting cycle was not always successful. 6) There was variation in nest-sitc location. The spatial pattern of nest distribution was strongly related to the temporal pattern, because the first males which settled, more often built their nests at sites along the shore where the nest was covered on one or two sides by vegetation. The location of nest site was significantly correlated with reproductive success. When males nested in partly concealed places along the shore, they could sometimes obtain a high reproductive success irrespective of the date of breeding initiation. Thus, reproductive success was largely determined by the timing of nest-building and nest position.

Abstract Abstract In environments such as arctic tundra, where bird densities are low and habitats are comparatively homogeneous, suitable nest sites likely are not limited. Under these conditions, reproductive success of birds may be determined by factors other than the habitat characteristics of nest sites. We studied the relative influence of nest habitat, food, nest distribution, and parental behavior on the reproductive success of tundra-breeding shorebirds at East Bay, Southampton Island, Nunavut, Canada. From 2000 to 2002, we monitored the nests of five species: Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola), Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus), Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), and Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius). For each species, habitat differed between nest sites and random sites. In contrast, habitat differed between successful and failed nest sites only for White-rumped Sandpipers. Shorebirds did not prefer to nest in habitats where food was most abundant. Although nest success varied among species in all years, artificial nest experiments suggested that interspecific variation in predation rate was not related to habitat type. Instead, the marked interspecific variation in nest success may have been related to incubation behavior. Species taking fewer incubation recesses had higher nest success, although these results should be viewed as preliminary. The factor with the greatest interannual influence on nest success was fluctuating predation pressure, apparently related to the abundance of predators and lemmings.

Individual diversity at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is predicted to be optimal at intermediate rather than at maximal levels. We showed previously in sticklebacks that an intermediate MHC diversity is predominant in natural populations and provides maximal resistance in experimental multiple parasite infections in the laboratory. However, what counts ultimately is the lifetime reproductive success (LRS). Here, we measured LRS of six laboratory-bred sib-groups—to minimize the influence of non-MHC genes—three-spined sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) during their entire breeding period, each in a seminatural enclosure in the lake of their parents, where they were exposed to the natural spectrum of parasites. We collected developing clutches at regular intervals and determined parenthood for a representative number of eggs (2279 in total) per clutch with 18 microsatellites. Both males and females with an intermediate MHC class II B variant number had the highest LRS. The mechanistic link of MHC diversity and LRS differed between the sexes: in females, we found evidence for a trade-off between number of eggs and immunocompentence, whereas in males this correlation was concealed by different timing strategies of reproduction.

AbstractThe central-periphery distribution model of nest dispersion suggests that nests located in the center of a colony are less accessible to predators and that birds breeding in the central area are of better physical quality and have greater reproductive success. Another hypothesis, the central-satellite distribution model, suggests that low-quality birds build their nests near those of high-quality pairs, which do not necessarily settle in the colony's center. Advantages of this type of association include increasing the opportunity for extra-pair copulation by low-quality females and increasing the potential for low-quality individuals to obtain a better breeding site or partner in the following season. Here we test these hypotheses on two colonies (Portelo and Faro) of the European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) on the Cíes Islands, Galicia, northwest Spain. Spatial distribution of pairs differing in quality was analyzed using residuals of reproductive success, eliminating the effect of physical quality of the nest site. A negative autocorrelation of these residuals between nests at short distances was detected for the Portelo colony. In Faro there was no evidence that nest distribution differed from a random distribution. Occupation of nest sites (measured as new nest or reoccupied nest) showed negative autocorrelation at short distances, implying that there was an association between new and reoccupied sites. These results demonstrate that nest distribution of European Shag colonies does not fit the central-periphery model, but rather corresponds to either the central-satellite model or to a random distribution.¿Es Generalizable el Modelo Centro-Periferia a Todas las Colonias de Aves Marinas? Distribución Espacial de los Nidos en Phalacrocorax aristotelisResumen. La distribución de los nidos en aves coloniales puede ser explicada por dos modelos. El modelo centro-periferia implica que las aves que crían en el centro de una colonia son menos accesibles a los depredadores, poseen una mejor condición y tienen un mayor éxito reproductivo. En cambio, el modelo centro-satélite sugiere que aves de baja calidad construyen sus nidos cerca de parejas de alta calidad para obtener ventajas como un mayor número de cópulas extrapareja por parte de hembras de baja calidad o un mejor sitio de cría o pareja en la siguiente estación de cría. En el presente estudio, nosotros contrastamos estos modelos con la distribución de la calidad de las parejas de Phalacrocorax aristotelis en dos colonias (Portelo y Faro) de las Islas Cíes situadas en Galicia, noroeste de España. Hemos utilizado como indicador de la calidad de la pareja los residuales del éxito reproductor, eliminando el efecto de la calidad del sitio de nido. En la colonia del Portelo se observó una correlación negativa entre la calidad de las parejas a una distancia menor de 4 m; en el Faro, en cambio, no hubo evidencias de una distribución diferente al azar. Además, se encontró una correlación espacial negativa entre los sitios de nido en los que se construyó un nido por primera vez y los sitios que fueron reocupados. En global, estos resultados muestran que la distribución de las colonias del P. aristotelis no corresponde al modelo centro-periferia, sino más bien al modelo centro-satélite o en todo caso, a una distribución al azar.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been detected in surface waters worldwide and can lead to developmental and reproductive disruption in exposed fishes. In the US Great Plains, EDCs are impacting streams and rivers and may be causing adverse reproductive effects. To examine how estrogenic EDCs might affect reproductive success of plains fishes, we experimentally exposed male red shiners ( Cyprinella lutrensis ) to exogenous 17β-estradiol. We characterized the effects of estradiol on male gonadal histology and secondary sexual characteristics, determined whether exposure reduced reproductive success, and examined the effects of depuration. Adults were exposed to a mean concentration of 70 ng·L−1 estradiol, a solvent control, or a water control for at least 83 days. Male exposure to estradiol resulted in elevated plasma vitellogenin concentrations, changes in spermatogenesis, reduced mating coloration and tubercles, altered mating behaviors, and reduced reproductive success with no viable progeny produced. Reproductive endpoints improved upon depuration (28 days). Exposure to estradiol had significant adverse effects on red shiners, indicating that wild populations may face developmental and reproductive difficulties if they are chronically exposed to estradiol.
