First record of three brachyuran decapods (Inachidae, Polybiidae, Thiidae) from the Canary Islands (NE Atlantic)

In the present account three brachyuran decapods,Macropodia linaresiForest & Zariquiey Álvarez, 1964 (Inachidae),Liocarcinus navigator(Herbst, 1794) (Polybiidae) andThia scutellata(Fabricius, 1793) (Thiidae), are recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands. This is the southernmost record ofM. linaresi. Crabs were caught in the frame of a dredging survey. Characteristics of the dredge stations are given, including the identification of 11 accompanying decapod species and 6 marine algae and plants characterizing their habitats.

New information on deep-water Cirripedia obtained during project surveys and experimental cruises in the Canary Islands region (NE Atlantic) have been analysed and collated with literature data. This annotated checklist includes 32 species of the Cirripedia Thoracica; four of them are recorded for the first time from the Canaries:Poecilasma aurantia,Poecilasma crassa,Heteralepas microstomaandAurivillialepas falcata. Information on the barnacles’ animal hosts in the area is also updated and compiled for the first time.

The Eucalyptus leaf gall wasp, Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), an invasive pest of Eucalyptus spp., which has been rapidly increasing its geographical distribution, is recorded for the first time in the Canary Islands.

The morphology of the first zoea stage of Chaceon affinis is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. Morphological comparison with the corresponding stage of other known species of Geryonidae allowed the differentiation between the genera Chaceon and Geryon, although it was impossible to distinguish among species of Chaceon using larval morphology. Thus, geryonid larvae collected in the plankton of Gran Canaria Island, NE Atlantic, during the years 2005 and 2006, could only be identified as Chaceon spp. The temporal distribution of larval abundance suggested that main hatching periods of Chaceon spp. occur in spring and summer. These results are useful to better understand the reproductive strategies of these deep-water crabs, which in turn will be useful for future fishery management of this resource of increasing interest in the Canary Islands.

The morphology of the second zoeal stage of Grapsus adscensionis, hatched from ovigerous specimens collected in the supralittoral zone of Taliarte Harbour, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, NE Atlantic), is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. The comparison of its larval morphology with those of other species of Grapsidae provides information for the characterization of the zoeal morphology of grapsids, with implications in the phylogenetic relationships within the family, as well as an aid in identification of plankton samples.

Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the introduction of exotic species that can have an impact on local fauna and flora. Here, the carpenter bee Xylocopa pubescens is reported in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) for the first time. This species is native to North Africa and the Near East and shows a rapid dispersion across the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, together with a single record in the southernmost tip of the island. Different hypotheses about its arrival to the island are discussed.

In this paper, we provide the first record of Phyllolabis savtshenkoi in Morocco previously known only from Spain and the Canary Islands. In addition, Dicranomyia goritiensis and Geranomyia caloptera are recorded for the first time in the oriental region of Morocco.

A Helorid wasp, Helorus ruficornis Förster, 1856, is reported for the first time on Tahiti (Society Islands), which is also the first record of both Proctotrupoidea and family Heloridae in French Polynesia. The potential hosts of Helorus ruficornis in French Polynesia are discussed.

Extensive survey of mantids in the northeastern Uttar Pradesh was conducted. Two mantid species were recorded for the first time from the target area, viz.: Pyrgomantis pallida, 1917 and Bactromantis mexicana.

   The Ciliophoran Trichodina magna Van As and Basson, 1989 is recorded for the first time in in Iraq from gills of the blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner, 1864) Iraq from Al-Graiat location on the Tigris River at Baghdad city. The description and measurements of this external parasite as well as its illustrations are given.

The revision of the herbarium material, collected in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk in 1965–1966 and stored in VNIRO, allowed to expand the taxonomic list of macrophyte algae of the coastal zone of this area. The locations of discovery of 24 previously unmentioned species are described. Myrionema balticum, Ulvella repens, Syncoryne reinkei, Acrochaetium arcuatum were found in the Sea of Okhotsk for the first time. Most species new for the Sea of Okhotsk is represented by epiphytes of the family Ulvellaceae (Chlorophyta). The final taxonomic list of this region, including literature data, consists of 169 species.
