Upon hearing that baptism should be administered by immersion while invoking the name of Jesus at the Arroyo Seco camp meeting of 1913, one minister expressed concern that this practice would associate the early pentecostal movement with a man named Sykes. Who Sykes was has been the matter of some mystery, but this research based on archival holdings and newspapers suggests that it was Joshua Sykes, a pacifist preacher who lived in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Sykes represents Progressive era controversies in religion and in pacifism, and his history explains some of the early resistance to adopting this particular form of baptism.

O presente artigo tem por intuito abordar o empoderamento da mulher a partir da experiência pentecostal. Inicialmente o artigo procura levantar bases na tradição bíblica sobre a figura da mulher para em seguida pontuar a história do movimento pentecostal e papel na mulher nele. Por fim trata da experiência pentecostal no mundo da mulher e como isso interfere em sua realidade.This article aims to address the empowerment of women from the Pentecostal experience. The theoretical references for this work are taken from the classics of the religious sciences, such as Cliford Geertz The Interpretation of Cultures (1989); The symbolic power (2002) of Pierre Bourdieu; The sacred canopy of Peter Berger (1985) among others and texts that reflect from the reality of the woman in Pentecostalism as is the case of Charismatic and Pentecostal (1996) Maria das Dores Campos Machado and Religious Experiences of Chilean Pentecostal Women (2010) of Elizabeth del Carmen Salazar Sanzana in articulation with other texts. Initially the article tries to establish bases in the biblical tradition on the figure of the woman to next to punctuate the history of the Pentecostal movement and paper in the woman in him. Finally it deals with the Pentecostal experience in the world of women and how it interferes with their reality.

Pentecostal hermeneutics: How do Swedish Pentecostal preachers interpret the Bible? In this article I present a study of Swedish Pentecostal preachers’ interpretations and applications of biblical texts. The study is based on 19 sermons that were published on the website “Söndag hela veckan”, January 19, 2020, by churches with “Pingst” (Pentecostal) in their name. The aim of the study was to contribute to the field of Pentecostal hermeneutics through an analysis of interpretative patterns in present day preachers’ sermons. The study shows that the preachers address a putative desire for a more devoted Christian life and that they do not practice exegetics in the sense of making historical readings searching for the original authors’ intention. Instead they apply the texts to the present here and now, thereby bringing the texts from them to us. This is done by means of generalizations, abstractions, and analogies in the form of parables and narratives. In this way the studied preachers endeavor to encourage and challenge their listeners to continue searching for the richer Christian life they long for. In relation to previous studies, I claim that the studied sermons constitute a special act of interpretation that cannot be compared with academic exegetics. I also suggest that the hermeneutics in the sermons cannot be described as narrative or, for example, poststructuralist. There are some marginal similarities with interpretations of fiction, but the sermons can on the whole be described as “a distinctive interpretive activity”. The message of the sermons is consistent with previous descriptions of Pentecostal theology, except that the preachers do not emphasize the story of the Pentecostal movement and, more remarkably, that traditional eschatology hardly has any place in the sermons.

Abstract This article explores the origins of the “latter rain” metaphor in the decades prior to its use in the pentecostal movement. While the importance of this metaphor has been documented by pentecostal histories, this is the first study of the origins of the metaphor of the latter rain and how it emerged within Wesleyan circles, was adopted by restorationist groups, and ultimately resulted in the pentecostal movement.

The Introduction follows a spiral movement beginning with the author’s motivation for choosing this area of study and moving into locating the themes of the study within the context of related literature. It narrows down the theoretical area from the broader field of new religious movements to Pentecostal–Charismatic Christianity and to more specifically the neo-Pentecostal movement. Thus the basic premises that gird this study and the reasons for choosing the theoretical and geographical fields of the study are highlighted. Thereafter, the physical area is explored by locating the fieldwork. The narration of the author’s field experiences takes one deeper into the personal space of the identity of the author both as a native anthropologist and an outsider. The chapter ends with the theoretical scheme of the book by outlining the chapters.
