A Taxonomic Revision of Desmodium (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae) in Brazil

Desmodium is characterized mainly by lilac flowers arranged in pseudoracemose inflorescences, stamens monadelphous or diadelphous and a lomentaceous fruit generally covered by uncinate hairs. A taxonomic revision of the Brazilian species was carried out based on the analysis of 3,000 herbarium specimens, including all nomeclatural types. Field trips to the most species-rich areas of Desmodium in Brazil were undertaken, resulting in the sampling of 29 out of the 34 species recognised for  the country. We recognise 101 names as synonyms, 27 of which are new. Lectotypes were designated for 60 accepted names and synonyms, and two neotypes and one epitype were chosen. A new combination is proposed for Meibomia microcarpa, as well as a new name for Meibomia guaranitica var. microcarpa. Desmodium album is a new  record for Brazil, and D. craspediferum, D. glabrescens and D. juruenense, previously known only by type collections, were recollected during this study. All species are described, mapped and illustrated. An identification key, and comments on taxonomy and nomenclature are provided.

Under the framework phylogeny of Apiaceae subfamily Apioideae and through a carefully examination of herbarium specimens, a taxonomic revision for Pleurospermopsis (a genus originally accepted as monotypic to include P. sikkimensis as the only representative), is presented. Its circumscription is expanded to comprise Pleurospermum bicolor (Franch.) Norman ex Pan & Watson. Therefore, a new combination of Pleurospermopsis bicolor (Franch.) J. Zhou & J. Wei is proposed with full taxonomic treatments. An identification key is also provided for the genus.

A taxonomic revision of the Brazilian species of Encyclia is presented, based on analysis of roughly 1,400 herbarium specimens, including types. Thirty-nine species and one variety are listed for Brazil; we indicate 101 synonyms, of which eight are newly proposed. Lectotypes are chosen for five names (E. chironii, E. dutrae, E. paraënsis, E. tripartita and Epidendrum capartianum), including accepted names and synonyms. Two names are indicated as invalid (E. randii var. rondoniensis and E. vazzoleri), one name as a nomen nudum (E. guesneliana) and another as superfluous (Epidendrum pabstii). The occurrence of E. auyantepuiensis and E. thienii is confirmed for Brazil, and new occurrences are documented of E. fimbriata in Minas Gerais (in addition to Bahia) and E. linearifolioides in Maranhão and possibly Paraná (in addition to Matto Grosso and Tocatins States and Bolivia and Paraguay). All species are described and illustrated, and distribution maps are included. For both varieties of E. patens, nomenclatural and taxonomic notes are provided.

In the present study, we presented a taxonomic revision of the genus Sorbaria (Sorbarieae; Amygdaloideae) with a new infrageneric classification. Moreover, we extensively reviewed various data for Sorbaria species, including previous anatomical, micromorphological, and palynological data. The new sectional classification was based on morphological, micromorphological, and palynological evidence, with two sections: sect. Sorbaria aut. and sect. Kirilowiana J.-H. Song & S.-P. Hong (sect. nov.). Overall, four species and five varieties (including two nomenclatural novelties) were recognized: S. sorbifolia (Linnaeus) A. Braun var. sorbifolia, S. sorbifolia var. glandulifolia J.-H. Song & S.-P. Hong, S. sorbifolia var. stellipila Maximowicz, S. pallasii (G. Don) Pojarkova, S. tomentosa (Lindley) Rehder var. tomentosa, S. tomentosa var. angustifolia (Wenzig) Rahn., S. kirilowii (Regel & Tiling) Maximowicz var. kirilowii, S. kirilowii var. arborea (C.K. Schneider) J.-H. Song & S.-P. Hong (comb. & stat. nov.), and S. kirilowii var. dubia (C.K. Schneider) J.-H. Song & S.-P. Hong (comb. nov.). Some illustrations and syntype were designated as the lectotype for several names. The classification was based on a comprehensive morphological examination of herbarium specimens, including field observations and observations of types, micromorphological, and palynological characteristics. In addition, we provided an identification key, diagnostic characteristics, full descriptions, comprehensive nomenclatural treatments and taxonomic notes (including complete synonymy), and distribution maps of Sorbaria species.

Taxonomic treatments of Pilosocereus in the Andean and Caribbean regions have varied widely. Recent authors often recognized three species only (P. lanuginosus, P. polygonus, and P. royenii), while Britton & Rose in 1920 (sub Cephalocereus) recognized 18 species in the same region. A revision of Pilosocereus is necessary, and it was carried out by the study of both herbarium specimens and living plants. Twelve species of Pilosocereus are recognized in the present paper for the Andean and Caribbean regions, including one new combination, i.e. P. curtisii, and one new species, i.e. P. jamaicensis. Typifications are provided for several names, including the Linnaean basionym Cactus royenii. Morphological descriptions, distributions, and an identification key of the recognized species are provided.

Abstract We present results related to the taxonomic revision of Psittacanthus (Loranthaceae) for “Flora do Brasil 2020”. Three new records were found: Psittacanthus kempffii to Rondônia, P. lasianthus to Roraima, and P. truncatus to Mato Grosso. Twelve new synonyms are proposed here: P. carnosus, P. crassipes and P. pustullosus (synonyms for P. acinarius), P. duckei (for P. biternatus), P. baguensis (for P. crassifolius, P. salvadorensis (for P. excrenulatus), P. bergii (for P. grandifolius, P. brachypodus, P. leptanthus and P. redactus (for P. lamprophyllus), P. acevedoi and P. rugostylus (for P. plagiophyllus). Three lectotypes are designated: for P. lasianthus, P. rugostylus and P. biternatus, which makes the neotype previously designated for P. biternatus superfluous. The type-specimen of P. formosus (synonym of P. robustus) was recently found. We propose an identification key for the 33 Brazilian species, with illustrations of the main characters used.

Odontostemma balfouriana (W.W.Sm.) Satish Chandra & D.S.Rawat is recorded here as a new record for the flora of India. Surprisingly, the species (previously known as Arenaria balfouriana W.W.Sm.) was erroneously considered to be a synonym of Stellaria depauperata Edgew. After examining protologues, fresh specimens and herbarium specimens housed in BSD, CAL and DD, the authors have resolved this taxonomic confusion and provided a new combination and lectotype for Arenaria balfouriana. Additionally, Stellaria depauperata, illegitimately combined under Arenaria, is resurrected and recognised as a distinct species.

Background: While working towards a taxonomic revision of the genus Lasiosiphon (Thymelaeaceae), it became clear that the current application of the name Lasiosiphon microphyllus did not correspond to the identity of the type material.Objectives: To effect the requisite nomenclatural changes.Method: Herbarium specimens from NBG and PRE as well as the type collections of L. microphyllus and Lasiosiphon suavissimus were studied.Results: Nomenclatural corrections are required for the taxa currently treated as L. microphyllus and L. suavissimus.Conclusions: Lasiosiphon microphyllus is recognised as the earliest name for the tetramerous species currently known as L. suavissimus. Gnidia kuntzei is the earliest available name for the pentamerous taxon currently treated as L. microphyllus and the new combination Lasiosiphon kuntzei (Gilg.) R.Kolokoto Magee is provided.

ABSTRACT The previously unknown female of Spodochlamys marahuaca Jameson & Ratcliffe, 2011 is described and illustrated for the first time based on two specimens collected in the region of the Juruá River, Amazonas state, Brazil. The specimens constitute a new record for Brazil. The identification key for species of Spodochlamys is updated, as well as the geographic distribution of the other two Brazilian species, S. caesarea Burmeister and S. iheringi Ohaus.

A taxonomic revision of Megalothoracha Hendel, 1911 is provided, including a description of Megalothoraca rosalyae Wendt, sp. nov. from Colombia. The genus encompasses large species from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia (new record), and each species was described based either on males or females. These species can be diagnosed by long and slender mid and hind legs and wing longer than body, vein R2+3 with two strong curves on apical third, and short spurious vein medially. And males have costal vein conspicuously bowed anteriorly and thickened on medial portion. The following nomenclatural changes are made: Megalothoraca hendeli Enderlein, 1912, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of M. pterodontida Hendel, 1911; Batrachophthalmum teleopsis (Hennig, 1938) comb. nov. is transferred from Megalothoraca, and Batrachophthalmum quimbaya Carvalho, Wolff & Wendt, 2011, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of B. teleopsis. A key to species and illustrations of the female and male terminalia are provided.

(Taxonomic notes on Leandra (Melastomataceae, Miconieae) - II). In this study we propose 12 synonyms, 15 lectotypes and a new name for eastern Brazilian species of Leandra. Leandra pubescens var. tomentosa is placed in the synonymy of Clidemia atrata; Leandra laxa in the synonymy of L. eriocalyx; Leandra sessiliflora in the synonym of L. glabrata; Leandra longisetosa in the synonymy of L. multiplinervis; Leandra balduinii, L. pauloensis and L. schwackei in the synonymy of L. regnellii; Leandra linearifolia and L. parvifolia in the synonymy of L. salicina; Leandra pubescens var. pubescens in the synonymy of L. strigilliflora; Leandra gardneriana and L. depauperata in the synonymy of L. xantholasia. We propose lectotypes for C. atrata, L. depauperata, L. gardneriana, L. glabrata, L. laxa, L. linearifolia, L. longisetosa, L. multiplinervis, L. parvifolia, L. pauloensis, L. pubescens var. pubescens, L. pubescens var. tomentosa, L. regnellii, L. sessiliflora, and L. xantholasia. A new name is proposed to correct a mistake recently made in the taxonomic revision of Leandra sect. Leandra.
