Clarification of the confusing identity of Cremanthodium atrocapitatum (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), with a new combination and a new species in the genus

Cremanthodium atrocapitatum (Asteraceae, Senecioneae) has been previously largely misunderstood, resulting in considerable taxonomic confusion involving several taxa. Based on observations of both herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants, here we clarify the taxonomic identity of this species. The Xizang (Tibet) plants previously referred to C. atrocapitatum are described as a new species, i.e. C. bomiense. Cremanthodium campanulatum var. brachytrichum is found to be very close to C. atrocapitatum rather than C. campanulatum, and is thus treated as C. atrocapitatum var. brachytrichum.

A detailed analysis of the type material of Vernonia oxyodonta clearly indicates that it is morphologically identical to Lessingianthus glabratus because it has glabrous leaves, pedunculate heads at the end of the inflorescence, outer phyllaries with acute apex and inner phyllaries with obtuse and mucronulate apex, and 30–40 florets per head. Consequently, all the specimens identified as V. oxyodonta are placed to a new species, L. pubescens. Also, V. pseudoincana is transferred to the genus Lessingianthus. This species belongs to the L. rubricaulis complex but can be distinguished from the remaining taxa of the group by its lanceolate leaves, grayish phyllaries, and habitat.

A new species of Haplopappus (Asteraceae), H. mieresii P. Medina & Nic. García, from the Coquimbo Region, Chile, is described and illustrated. Additionally, the reinstatement of H. reicheanus H. M. Hall is proposed in agreement with the exhaustive revision of type material and protologues, as well as the study of herbarium specimens. We provide distributional maps, illustrations, conservation assessments, and taxonomic notes for both species, and a key to the species most allied to H. mieresii within H. section Haplopappus.

The giant water bug fauna from tropical South America remains poorly known. Three species of Belostoma Latreille (Belostoma fittkaui De Carlo, B. sayagoi De Carlo and B. hirsutum Roback & Nieser) have been cited only a few times in the literature. These three species are remarkable since they represent an extreme variation for the genus, with article II of the labium distinctly shorter than article III. Here, the synonymy of B. hirsutum with B. sayagoi is proposed based on examination of type material and additional specimens. Further, B. fittkaui and B. sayagoi are redescribed, including discussion about comparative morphology with congeners. A new species group is proposed for these species and a key to the Belostoma species groups is provided. Distribution records are also updated.

Eleven species of Methocha Latreille from Taiwan are revised. Methocha cirrhocrus Narita & Mita, sp. nov. is described and illustrated. The previously unknown male of M. maai Lin, 1966 is described. Methocha taoi Lin, 1966 is newly synonymized under Methocha areolata Lin, 1966. The genus Karlissa Krombein, 1979 is newly recorded from Taiwan, and a new combination is proposed for Methoca (sic!) tricha Strand, 1913, which is transferred to the genus Karlissa Krombein. A key to the species based on males and females is given.

Three Asclerobia species from the Palaearctic region are reviewed and diagnosed. A new species—Asclerobia alexandrae sp. nov. from Tyva region of Russia is described. The lectotype of Sclerobia tchahabarella Amsel, 1950 is designated, and the new combination—Asclerobia tchahabarella (Amsel, 1950) comb. nov. is proposed. A key to the species is given based on the combination of external and genitalia characters of both sexes.

The coelidiinae leafhopper genus Baseprocessa Fan & Li is newly recorded from India based on the description of B. patkaensis Meshram sp. nov. and a proposed new combination, B. serratispatulata (Viraktamath & Meshram) comb. nov. Materials are deposited in the National Pusa Collection, Division of Entomology, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, India. Photographic illustrations, checklist and key to species of this genus along with a distribution map are also provided.
