The giant water bug fauna from tropical South America remains poorly known. Three species of Belostoma Latreille (Belostoma fittkaui De Carlo, B. sayagoi De Carlo and B. hirsutum Roback & Nieser) have been cited only a few times in the literature. These three species are remarkable since they represent an extreme variation for the genus, with article II of the labium distinctly shorter than article III. Here, the synonymy of B. hirsutum with B. sayagoi is proposed based on examination of type material and additional specimens. Further, B. fittkaui and B. sayagoi are redescribed, including discussion about comparative morphology with congeners. A new species group is proposed for these species and a key to the Belostoma species groups is provided. Distribution records are also updated.

The morphology of the genus Scapheremaeus Berlese, 1910 is reviewed and characters of taxonomic utility delineated. Based on the morphological review, some 13 species-groups are outlined based on major morphotypes. There are two main categories: i) species that have a complete circumdorsal scissure with plicate microsculpture on the circumnotogastral plate and strongly contrasting microsculpture (foveolae, ridges or tubercles) on the centrodorsal plate (plicate species-groups), and ii) species with the circumdorsal scissure complete, incomplete or absent but with little or no contrast in microsculpture between the central and lateral regions: typically both regions foveolate or reticulate (non- plicate species-groups). A catalogue of world species of Scapheremaeus is provided. Scapheremaeus petrophagus (Banks, 1906) is not a Scapheremaeus but belongs to an undetermined genus in the Ameronothroidea. Cymbaeremaeus cyclops Oudemans, 1915 is recombined to Scapheremaeus. Five new species are described (S. angusi sp. nov., S. cheloniella sp. nov., S. ewani sp. nov., S. lambieae sp. nov., and S. pulleni sp. nov.) from soil and litter habitats in semi-arid Mallee eucalypt vegetation at Bookmark Biosphere Reserve, South Australia. These are the first members of the genus Scapheremaeus to be described from Australia, though undescribed species have been recorded previously. All the new species are morphologically closely-related and belong to a single species-group: Carinatus.

The New World Clistopyga isayae species group is revised. Seven species are described as new: C. crassicaudata sp. nov., C. isayae sp. nov., C. kalima sp. nov., C. nigriventris sp. nov., C. panchei sp. nov., C. splendida sp. nov. and C. taironae sp. nov. An illustrated identification key to all species of the group is provided. The Clistopyga isayae species group is composed entirely of previously undescribed species mainly from Andean forests of tropical South America.

A new sun-spider species of the ibirapemussu species-group of the genus Gaucha is described based on males and a female collected in Southeastern Brazil. The newly described species can be readily distinguished from its congeners by the reduction of the cheliceral fixed finger, distal tooth (FD), closely positioned and smaller than the medial tooth (FM); the presence of cheliceral fixed finger profondal subproximal (PFSP) and retrofondal submedial (RFSM) teeth; and by the cheliceral movable finger, medial tooth (MM) well developed, larger than submedial tooth (MSM) and smaller than proximal tooth (MP). This is the thirteenth described species in the genus Gaucha, all known from South America.

The little known Neotropical genus Polynemula Ogloblin (Mymaridae) and its type species P. rufosignata Ogloblin are redescribed based on the type material and a recently collected female specimen from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. A new species of Polynema Haliday from the newly defined pallidiventre species group of Polynema (Doriclytus Foerster), P. (D.) nupogodi sp. n., is described from Argentina and the only other species in this new group, P. (D.) pallidiventre (Ogloblin), is redescribed. A key to the two species of this group is provided.

A new species, Baetis pentaphyllus sp. nov., is described on the basis of larvae from the Far East of Russia (type locality Bolshoi Garmakan River). Larvae of Baetis pentaphyllus sp. nov. may be distinguished from other Baetis species by the presence of only five pairs of tergalii on segments III–VII. The mitochondrial COI sequence obtained from the described species was compared with the data present in GeneBank and BOLD. The DNA barcodes allowed discrimination of B. pentaphyllus sp. nov. from other species of Baetis with available sequence data. The average interspecific K2P distances were 10–15%, which are values well above those associated with intraspecific variation. COI sequences as well as 36 morphological larval characters were analysed using Bayesian inference to relate the described species to the recognized species-groups of the Baetis genus. B. pentaphyllus sp. nov formed a sister clade to B. vardarensis + B. lutheri which belong to the Baetis lutheri species-group.

Trechodes intermedia sp. nov. and T. kogelbergensis sp. nov. are described from South Africa. A third species, T. humeralis (Jeannel, 1930) comb.nov. is transferred to Trechosia Jeannel from the genus Cothresia Jeannel. All three species are macropterous, endemic to the South African Cape region, and together represent a new species group of the genus Trechosia. Keys to the species groups of the genus Trechosia and to the species of the new T. intermedia group are provided.

AbstractA revised diagnosis of the genus Saldula Van Duzee based upon synapomorphic characters of male genitalia and hemelytral pigmentation patterns is given. According to this concept ca. 55% of the species World-wide currently assigned to Saldula will have to be transferred to other genera. Several new characters are employed in the definition of species and species groups. The species attributable to the pallipes species group are listed and supplemented by a brief overview of the taxonomic relationships of the Old World species. Saldula luteola sp. n. is described from coastal salt marshes on the Island of Djerba, Tunisia. It mainly appears in extremely depigmented morphs unparalleled elsewhere in the Saldidae and likely constitutes a sister-species of S. sardoa Filippi. The conspicuous intraspecific variation in body size and hemelytral pigmentation in S. palustris (Douglas), the closest relative of the former species, is depicted and briefly discussed. The descriptive accounts are accompanied by numerous photographic illustrations of somatic and genital characters.

The male and female imago (subimago of both sexes unknown), and larva of a new species belonging to the Baetis buceratus species-group, namely Baetis (Baetis) zdenkae sp. nov. from Rhodos Island are described and illustrated in detail. Substantial diagnostic characters of males and larvae of the whole B. buceratus species-group are summarized and its position relative to other species groups is discussed. Critical characters distinguishing B. zdenkae sp. nov. from all other representatives of the B. buceratus species-group are emphasized and a discussion of 22 characters of the remaining 6 European species-groups of the subgenus Baetis Leach, 1815 s. str. and their relationships is offered. Available data on the biology of B. zdenkae sp. nov. (vertical distribution, habitat, current and substrate preference, abundance and density, possible life cycle type, and mating flight and oviposition patterns) and distribution with respect to possible endemism are given. Basic data on biology and area of distribution of Westpalaearctic species Baetis (Baetis) buceratus Eaton, 1870, B. (B.) nexus Navás, 1918 and B. (B.) spei Thomas & Dia, 1985 known only from Lebanon are summarized and compared to those of B. zdenkae sp. nov.

The monophyletic agelenid genus Barronopsis Chamberlin & Ivie is revised to include 6 species. The Cuban species B. campephila Alayón and B. cesari Alayón are synonomized under B. barrowsi (Gertsch) and B. jeffersi (Muma), respectively, and B. stephaniae new species is described. Natural history observations, distribution maps, diagnoses and descriptions, and a species identification key including B. texana (Gertsch), B. arturoi Alayón, and B. floridensis (Muma) are provided. Detailed descriptions of the male palpus and female genitalia, a review and evaluation of historical terminology used to describe agelenid palpal bulbs, and a discussion of the utility of certain male palpal characters in resolving phylogeny within Agelenidae are provided. Based on the morphology of the male and female genitalia and morphometric data, two species groups are recognized: a large-bodied B. texana species group (B. texana, floridensis, arturoi, jeffersi) and a small-bodied B. barrowsi species group (B. barrowsi, B. stephaniae). A cladistic analysis of Barronopsis, using Tortolena glaucopis (F. O. P.-Cambridge), Melpomene singula (Gertsch & Ivie), and species of Agelenopsis Giebel as outgroups identified three most parsimonious trees of 37 steps. The strict consensus tree yielded the following species relationships: (Agelenopsis (((B. texana, B. jeffersi), B. floridensis, B. arturoi), (B. barrowsi, B. stephaniae))))).Key words: Agelenopsis, revision, taxonomy, phylogenetic analysis
