Dryadella catharinensis, a new orchid species found in the north-northeast part of the Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil, is described here. The tiny new species was found in the dense ombrophilous submontane forest (Floresta Ombrófila Densa Submontana) in the Atlantic Rainforest. It is similar to Dryadella susanae, which is endemic of the Espírito Santo state and differs in the larger vegetative size, the narrow and suberect leaf, yellow flowers, the sepals with slightly denticulate margins, the petals with an obtuse apex and the cuneate lip with denticulated margins and a annular callus in the median portion of the claw. It is the fifteenth Dryadella species restricted to the Atlantic Rainforest (~25% of the genus), evidencing the importance of the conservation of this biome—of which only 11% remains—for the genus. Due to the rarity and low density of this species in the field, allied to the degradation of the habitat, we suggest a conservation status of Endangered. Further fieldwork is needed to locate additional populations and study the biological aspects for their conservation.

We describe here Begonia medeiroii, a narrow endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest. The conservation status of this species was assessed as critically endangered according to IUCN criteria. This species resembles to B. catharinensis and B. hirtella in some characteristics, differing among other features due the presence of adventitious vegetative buds on the adaxial surface of the leaves.

This article presents and describesPlantago humboldtiana, an extremely narrow endemic rheophytic new species from a waterfall in Corupá, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. The new species is unique in presenting a combination of type-G antrorse trichomes on scapes, pendulous inflorescences and 1-seeded pyxidia. Only one population is known to exist, despite intensive search efforts in nearby, similar environments. Its conservation status is assessed as critically endangered (CR) as the only known population is restricted to a dramatically small area, and is subject to extreme fluctuation due to occasional floods, and also to intense visitation by tourists, which can disturb its fragile habitat. We also present an updated identification key to the species ofPlantagothat occur in Santa Catarina. The recent description of three narrow endemic, threatened new species ofPlantagoin Santa Catarina, which is the Brazilian state with its flora best studied, highlights the need for more taxonomic research, especially in the neotropics.

This contribution presents and describes Siphocampylus baccae and S. sevegnaniae, two narrowly endemic new species from waterfalls and rocky cliffs in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We assess the conservation status of both species as critically endangered (CR) according to the IUCN criteria. We present descriptions, photographs, a distribution map and taxonomic comments on the new species along with an identification key to the species of Siphocampylus that occur in Santa Catarina.

This contribution describes Phyllanthus eremitus, an extremely narrowly endemic new species from an arenitic rock outcrop in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We assess the conservation status of the new species as critically endangered, because only one population is known, containing less than 30 mature individuals, and it is outside any environmental protection area. We provide a detailed morphological description, a distribution map and photographs of the new species. In addition to that, we lectotypify the name P. hyssopifolioides and present the first records of this species in Santa Catarina, which were discovered during field and herbarium work. Finally, we provide an updated identification key to Phyllanthus in Santa Catarina.

This contribution presents and describes Tradescantia schwirkowskiana, a narrow endemic new species from Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We assess here the conservation status of this new species as critically endangered, according to the IUCN criteria. We present here a complete description, illustrations and comments on the new species, along with an identification key to the species of Tradescantia that occur in Santa Catarina. Furthermore, we designate here a lectotype and an epitype for T. crassula, the morphologically-closest species to T. schwirkowskiana.

In this work we describe Ludwigia humboldtiana, an extremely narrowly endemic new species from a waterfall system in Corupá municipality, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This is already the second plant species endemic to the area. The new species is morphologically most similar to L. caparosa, L. elegans, L. multinervia and L. peruviana but differs from those by a series of taxonomically important characters. We present field photographs, a distribution map and a detailed morphological account of the new species, discuss its morphology and taxonomy in relation to the morphologically most similar other species of Ludwigia, and assess its conservation status according to IUCN criteria.

During field works in Santa Catarina state, we found a new species of Chascolytrum that presents a bulb-like rhizome. This species is similar to Chascolytrum bulbosum, from Pampa biome, differing by glabrous leaf blades, inflorescences larger and laxer, longer spikelets and paleas glabrous between the keels. We additionally provide field and studio photographs and assess its conservation status according to IUCN criteria.

A New Species

Myrceugenia joinvillensis, a new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is described and compared with related species. This taxon seems to be restricted to the Serra do Mar range in the Southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in the municipalities of Joinville and Schroeder. Additionally, there are provided information on its phenology, distribution and conservation status.

Bothriochloa catharinensis, a new species of Andropogoneae (Poaceae: Panicoideae, Andropogoneae) endemic to montane grasslands associated with araucaria forest in the state of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, is described and illustrated. Morphological similarities between the new taxon and other species of Bothriochloa are discussed. Comments on habitat, morphology, distribution and conservation status are provided.
