The correct use of the name Scytalopus speluncae (Ménétriés, 1835), and the description of a new species of Brazilian tapaculo (Aves: Passeriformes: Rhinocryptidae)

Scytalopus speluncae was described from a specimen taken at São João del Rei, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ménétriés described it as having the throat and the central breast evidently whitish, but since then this name has been rather surprisingly attributed to the uniformly slate gray Mouse-colored Tapaculo of the eastern coastal Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Contrary to previous findings, our analysis of the holotype, two new specimens from the type locality (topotypes) and original description of Scytalopus speluncae indicates that this name must be applied to the pale gray form with rufous-barred thighs that is found in Minas Gerais. This species is apparently very common in São João del Rei. This paper redescribes Scytalopus speluncae, correcting this name application, and describing, as a new species, populations from the Serra do Mar and vicinity, previously misidentified as S. speluncae.

Vellozia fontellana is described as a new species from the Ibitipoca massif in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This heliophilous species has sometimes been identified as V. crinita in herbaria and recent literature, but is readily distinguished by morphology, anatomy and occurrence restricted to northward slopes exposed to full sun exposure. The original description of V. crinita, translated from Latin, is complemented by information gathered from our collections and observations in the type locality spanning the last three decades of field work.

A new species, Calea arachnoidea, which belongs to Calea sect. Meyeria, is hereby described and illustrated. This species occurs in the Serra Negra region, located in the southern portion of the “Zona da Mata” in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Calea arachnoidea resembles C. quadrifolia, C. heteropappa and C. semirii, and its relationships with these species are discussed and an identification key for the species of C. sect. Meyeria in the state of Minas Gerais is provided. Additionally, photographs, a distribution map, comments about habitat and conservation status are provided.

Plutomurus jordanai sp. nov. from Zeda Kvilishori Cave (Tskaltubo Municipality, Imereti region, Western Georgia) is described, illustrated and differentiated from other morphologically similar species‒‒P. kelasuricus Martynova, 1969 and P. eristoi Barjadze, Baquero, Soto-Adames, Giordano & Jordana, 2016. In addition, morphological characters omitted or erroneously provided in the original description of Plutomurus birsteini Djanashvili & Barjadze, 2011 are described and illustrated from the specimen sampled in the type locality‒‒Sakishore Cave (Racha region, Western Georgia). An identification key to the species of the genus Plutomurus reported from the Caucasus is presented. A list of the invertebrate communities for Zeda Kvilishori and Sakishore caves is provided.

ABSTRACT A new species of Characidium is described based on specimens obtained from the highland streams of the Serra do Mar, Atlantic Forest Biome, in Paraná State, Southern Brazil. The new species is possibly a member member of the C. lauroi group, which is diagnosed by having the isthmus unscaled, bars poorly marked, and spots on sides of body, and is composed by four additional species: C. japuhybense ; C. lauroi ; C. oiticicai ; and C. schubarti . The new species differs from its congeners with naked isthmus, except C. helmeri , by having 15-18 principal caudal-fin rays; and 10-12 pectoral-fin rays; and from C. helmeri , by having a slender body, tip of pectoral fin not reaching origin of pelvic fin, tip of pelvic fin not reaching beyond anus, supraorbital present and well developed, and by lacking vertically elongated dashes on sides of body. The new species is known from tributaries of the rio Jordão, in the rio Iguaçu Basin, and rio Taquari, a tributary of the rio Ribeira de Iguape coastal drainage.

A new species of Cosmetidae belonging to the genus Metavononoides Roewer, 1928 is herein described. Metavononoides melanacanthus sp. nov. is clearly recognized by its distinctive tarsal formula, its long legs (reaching over 60 mm), and by its characteristic color pattern. The new species is the twelfth species included in the genus. It is known only from two localities: the type locality, Barra de São João, Casimiro de Abreu and from Aldeia Velha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tovomita iaspidis, a new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is described, illustrated, and its morphological affinities with other species and its diagnostic characters are discussed. The new species is similar to Tovomita glazioviana, from which it can be distinguished by having greenish patent petals and larger and reddish pistillode in the staminate flowers. While T. glazioviana is found in the Atlantic Forest in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro, T. iaspidis is so far only known from two small remnant areas of montane forest in southern Bahia State, Brazil.

We described a new species of Phyllanthus currently known from a single fragment of Ombrophilous Dense Forest in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Phyllanthus pedicellatus is the second species of the genus with phylloclades found in the Atlantic Forest domain, once mostly Brazilian Phyllanthus with these kinds of specialized branches grow in open vegetation as “campos rupestres” and cerrado. The name is a reference to its remarkable pedicels of pistillate flowers. We present illustrations and photographs of the new species in its habitat, comments on its relationships to other Brazilian Phyllanthus, and its conservation status.

A new species of Inga (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoid clade), restricted to the Atlantic Forest of Minas Gerais State, Brazil, is described, illustrated, and compared in an inedited identification key to the species with stipitate extrafloral nectaries in the biome, Inga ciatiformis is similar to Inga cabelo and Inga platyptera. It differs from I. cabelo by having appressed-sericeous young branches, leaves with 1–3 pairs of leaflets, a terminal appendix 7–12 mm long, cyathiform extrafloral nectaries, bracts 9–13 mm long, linear, persistent, and a sparsely sericeous calyx (vs. hirsute-hispid young branches, leaves with 2–5 leaflets pairs, terminal appendix 2.5 mm long, capitate extrafloral nectaries, bracts 2 mm long, triangular, caducous, and a hirsute calyx). It differs from I. platyptera by having appressed-sericeous young branches, a cylindrical petiole and rachis, rachis rarely winged in the superior portion of the apical pair of leaflets, extrafloral nectaries always cyathiform, and linear bracts (vs. hispid young branches, winged petioles and rachises, extrafloral nectaries generally cupuliform, and lanceolate to ovate bracts).

Capsicum carassense Barboza & Bianchetti sp. nov., a species from mid-elevation of the Atlantic Forest (Minas Gerais, Brazil) is described and illustrated. This endemic new species is distinguished from the most similar C. mirabile Mart. by its moderate to dense general pubescence, narrowly elliptic leaves and larger calyx appendages and corollas. A key for the native Brazilian species of Capsicum growing in the state of Minas Gerais is also provided.
