A new species of Oscarella (Demospongiae: Plakinidae) from the Western Sea of Japan

Oscarella malakhovi sp. nov. is described from the waters of Peter the Great Bay (northwestern Sea of Japan, Russia) at depths between 0.4–4 m from a rocky coast. This is the first record of the genus Oscarella from the North-Western Pacific. The new species is characterized by its pinky-beige to yellow color, undulating appearance, lumpy, microlobate surface, soft, slimy consistency, two particular kinds of cells with inclusions (vacuolar and granular cells), and of two kinds of endobiont bacteria. The new species of Oscarella is clearly different in cell, endobiotic bacteria content, and external morphology from all previously described species of Oscarella.

Представлены сведения об обнаружении в зал. Петра Великого (северо-западная часть Японского моря) нового для фауны России вида двустворчатого моллюска Tellimya fujitaniana (Yokoyama, 1927) (Lasaeidae). Три живые особи с длиной раковины 3.9–6.2 мм собраны в 2003 и 2018 гг. в диапазоне глубин 17–28 м на илисто-песчаном грунте. Обобщены данные по экологии и ареалу данного вида. Ключевые слова: двустворчатый моллюск, Tellimya fujitaniana (Yokoyama, 1927), Lasaeidae, распространение, залив Петра Великого, Японское море. Information on finding in Peter the Great Bay (north-western part of the Sea of Japan) a new species of bivalve mollusk for the fauna of Russia, Tellimya fujitaniana (Yokoyama, 1927) (Lasaeidae), are presented. Three alive specimens with shell length 3.9–6.2 мм were collected in 2003 and 2018 at the depths of 17–28 m on muddy sand. Data on the ecology and geographical range of this species are summarized. A first record of the genus Aciculites in the Mediterranean Sea and the description of Aciculites mediterranea sp. nov. are here presented from a faunistic survey in a dark shallow marine cave of the north-western Sardinian karstic area. The new species is characterized by a massive cerebellum-like growth form, and a peculiar distribution of inhalant and exhalant areas, respectively, in depressed and elevated portions of the sponge surface. Oscules show a long narrow atrial cavity. Ectosomal skeleton is made of tangential anisostrongyles on elevated areas, and more or less vertical tufts of anisostrongyles in depressed inhalant areas. Anisostrongyles are smooth or with tips ornated by irregular tubercles. Sigmaspire microscleres are lacking. Choanosomal skeleton with tubercled irregular rizhoclone desmas and few scattered and variably oriented anisostrongyles. A comparative analysis of Aciculites mediterranea sp. nov. versus morphological diagnostic traits, geographical range and habitat of the species hitherto ascribed to Aciculites confirms that the peculiar distribution of the genus supports its relic condition of an ancient Tethyan fauna in the Mediterranean Sea.

Purpose. The paper is aimed at studying the hydrological regime of the Novik Bay (Russky Island, Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). Methods and Results. Regular ship and ice cover CTD observations (more 1000 water column profiling stations) carried out in the Novik and Amur bays in 2013–2018 were used. Weather conditions in the region under study were analyzed based on the data of the Vladivostok weather station archive (WMO_ID=31960). Quantitative estimates of the drift and gradient currents in the bay are represented. Conclusions. Seasonal changes in the thermohaline stratification of the Peter the Great Bay coastal waters are conditioned by the monsoon climate features. The Novik Bay hydrological regime is additionally affected by its isolation and shallowness, as well as by the Russky Island relief. Weak water dynamics in the bay is observed during the summer monsoon (April – August) that is a result of the south winds blocking by the hills. The autumn-winter monsoon (when the north winds dominate) induces the water surge to the bay that, in its turn, blocks its circulation. The winter Siberian cold anticyclone forms the ice cover in the bay, and just in such an ice-forming season the salinity increase in the bottom layer is observed. In the shallow southern part of the Novik Bay, the process of ice formation begins. The downwelling flow of salty heavy water directed to the north out of the bay along the bottom relief is compensated by the counter flow of fresh waters from the Amur Bay which inflow to the upper sub-ice layer. The freeze-up period is most favorable for water renewal. The efficiency of this process is additionally influenced by a heat flow from bottom sediments and by the ice conditions in the adjacent water areas of the Peter the Great Bay

Two new species of rotifer belonging to the Dicranophoridae, and provisionally placed in the genus Encentrum, are described from littoral psammon from the Ussuriyskiy Bay, Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan, Russia. Encentrumkutikovae sp. nov. is characterized by a long foot consisting of three pseudosegments, cylindrical toes, a hexagonal rami outline, and the right ramus showing an accessory chamber with alula. Encentrum ussuriensis sp. nov. is characterized by unusual stout toes with claw, an oblong-ovate and latero-caudal weakly angular rami outline, the right ramus bearing an alula, and the left one showing an accessory chamber.

The genus Chone Krøyer, 1856, and related genera of the family Sabellidae (Polychaeta) are common members of softbottom communities. Four new species from Japanese waters are described herein: Dialychone okudai n. sp., from Hokkaido, Paradialychone katsuuraensis n. sp., from Katsuura, Boso Peninsula; P. edomae n. sp., from Tokyo Bay and Jasmineira kikuchii n. sp., from Ariake Sound, Kyushu. A re-description is also provided for a poorly known species C. cincta Zachs, 1933. This species, originally described from the Peter the Great Bay, Eastern Russia was recorded in this study from Amakusa and Ariake Sound, Kyushu and transferred to Paradialychone. Jasmineira kikuchii is the first record of the genus from Japan. The Japanese species described here are compared with other conspecifics of the world and a key for the sabellid genera with a glandular girdle on chaetiger 2 and thoracic acicular uncini is provided.
