Three new species of Myxosporea (Bivalvulida: Ceratomyxidae: Alatasporidae) from the gall bladders of anglerfishes Lophius spp. (Teleostei: Lophiidae) in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean

Three new species of myxosporeans are described from the gall bladders of Lophius piscatorius L. and L. budegassa Spinola. Ceratomyxa lophii n. sp. was found in 14 of 42 L. piscatorius from two locations to the northwest of Scotland in March 2000. Alataspora budegassai n. sp. was found in all eight specimens of L. budegassa caught off Algarve in the south of Portugal in June and August 2000. Pseudalataspora lophii n. sp. was found in 21 of 48 L. piscatorius from six locations to the west and northwest of Scotland in March 2000, March 2004 and October 2004. Ceratomyxa lophii n. sp. is one of only a few species of the genus having unequal spore valves, but differs from all the other species in spore dimensions and in the form of the plasmodium. The dimensions of the spore of Alataspora budegassai n. sp. are very similar to those of A. africana Shulman, Kovaleva & Dubina, 1979, described from a species of perciform fish caught off West Africa, but are markedly different from those of any of the other 15 described species of Alataspora. Pseudalataspora lophii n. sp. differs from the other 11 species of Pseudalataspora described to date in the dimensions of the spore and other features.

Sigmaxinella cearense sp. nov. is described here on the basis of a single specimen collected in 2004 at Parque Estadual Marinho da Pedra da Risca do Meio, off Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. This is the first record of Sigmaxinella for the Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from the other eleven Sigmaxinella species by the absence of raphides/microxea, and is the only species with a single category of styles as megascleres (mean length 435µm, mean width 12µm), and sigmas (mean length 21µm). The new species appears to be closer to Australian species of Sigmaxinella, on the basis of overall spicule morphology (mainly dimensions and categories of megascleres). This could be suggestive of a transpacific track for the colonization of the South Atlantic, instead of the shorter Agulhas track.Key words: Sigmaxinella, taxonomy, Parque Estadual da Pedra da Risca do Meio, sponge, new species, sandstone reef, Brazil

A review of the West African “snail-killing flies” or “marsh flies” (Sciomyzidae) shows that the fauna is not as dominated by the generally aquatic, predaceous genus Sepedon as was previously considered. Twenty species in seven genera, including three new species, Colobaea occidentalis, Pteromicra zariae and Sepedonella castanea are recorded. The Holarctic-Oriental genera Colobaea and Pteromicra are documented from Africa south of the Sahara for the first time. Biogeographical analyses based on the discovery of “Palaearctic” genera of Diptera south of the Sahara, faunal connections, and dispersal routes are presented. A key for identification and illustrations of diagnostic characters for some species are included.

Four apseudomorph tanaidaceans are recorded from benthos of the shelf off Angola and off northern Namibia (SouthWest Africa). Of these, three are new to science, one each in the genera Hemikalliapseudes, Calozodion andApseudopsis. The genus Hemikalliapseudes now contains four species, all described from West Africa (Angola andMauretania). The new species Hemikalliapseudes sebastiani sp. nov. is separated from other species of this genus byfeatures of several appendages, and the shape of the cephalothorax, pereonites and telson. The genus Calozodion ismainly distributed in the Atlantic and also in the Indian Ocean. Calozodion dominiki sp. nov. is the tenth representativeof the genus and is readily distinguished from all others in that the cheliped propodus of the male has only smallprocesses proximo-ventrally. The new species was widely distributed in the investigation area. Apseudopsis cuanzanussp. nov. is a new member of this species-rich and widely-distributed genus. It differs from the other species of this genusby a combination of several morphological features, including the absence of a dorsodistal spine on the pereopod 1merus, the lack of anterolateral spines on the pereonites, the shape of rostrum and by the absence of plumose setae on pereopod six basis.

Three new marine tardigrade species from the deep-sea genus Coronarctus are described from the South-Western Atlantic Ocean: Coronarctus dissimilis sp. nov., C. neptunus sp. nov., and C. yurupari sp. nov. These, and C. laubieri Renaud-Mornant, 1987, are the first records of deep-sea tardigrades from this marine region. Specimens of those species were collected from two localities of the Brazilian continental slope (Potiguar and Campos basins) at depths comprised between 150 and 3000 m. Specimens of the three new species have short cephalic appendages and heteromorphic claws, belonging to the, here designated, C. tenellus group of species. Each of the new species can be distinguished from all the other species of the group by their peculiar-shaped secondary clavae and claws. The most relevant morphological characters used for the taxonomy of the genus: shape of cephalic cirri, shape of secondary-clavae, size and number of accessory spines on claws, and shape of seminal receptacles, are discussed and an identification key to all ten known Coronarctus species is provided.

The actual diversity of Terebellides (Annelida; Trichobranchidae) in the South East Atlantic Ocean remains largely unknown. Only two species have been reported to date, T. stroemii Sars, 1835 and T. jorgeni Hutchings, 2007. The revision of specimens collected during the Atlantide and Galathea oceanographic cruises in the Atlantic coast of Africa, along with new materials obtained during monitoring surveys off Gabon, Congo and Angola, has allowed us to describe seven new species: T. augeneri sp. nov., T. congolana sp. nov., T. fauveli sp. nov., T. kirkegaardi sp. nov., T. longiseta sp. nov., T. nkossa sp. nov. and T. ramili sp. nov. Moreover, the type material of Terebellides stroemii var. africana Augener, 1918 is redescribed and the variety raised to species. All taxa are morphologically characterised and compared with species described or reported in world seas, particularly from the Atlantic Ocean. The presence of T. stroemii in Africa and the validity of the thoracic uncini as taxonomic character is discussed and a key to all species of Terebellides described from the South Atlantic Ocean is provided.

AbstractThe spiral intestines of a total of 16 round fantail stingraysTaeniurops grabatafrom the Mediterranean Sea off Tunisia were examined for cestodes. A new genus is erected in the Anthocephaliidae (Rhinebothridea) asAlveobothriumgen. n., withAlveobothrium grabatumsp. n. as its type species; the new genus differs from the other genera in the order in that its members possess bothridia with an apical sucker, marginal loculi and multiple staggered rows of facial loculi.Alveobothrium zarzisensesp. n. is also described. The species differ in the number of marginal loculi and in proglotid anatomy. Another anthocephaliid belonging to the genusAnthocephalumis also described fromT. grabata. Anthocephalum jeancadenatisp. n. is most similar toA. alicaeandA. michaeli, but differs in size of terminal proglottid and number of proglottids. All these new species are also found in formalin-preserved cestodes fromT. grabatacollected at Gorée Island (Senegal) between 1946 and 1954 by the French ichthyologist J. Cadenat and conserved in the personal collection of the late L. Euzet. The presence of the same rhinebothriideans species parasitizingT. grabatain both the Mediterranean (Tunisia) and the eastern Atlantic (Senegal) is discussed.
