A New Species

A new species of the pontoniine shrimp genus Palaemonella Dana, 1852, from the Red Sea is described and illustrated. Found from 519–544m; this is the greatest depth from which this genus has so far been reported. It is a species of the Indo-West Pacific P. dolichodactylus species complex, to the taxa of which a key is provided.

A new species of hippolytid shrimp, Hippolyte ngi n. sp., is described and illustrated based on specimens collected from the Indo-West Pacific region. The new species clearly belongs to the ‘Hippolyte ventricosa H. Milne Edwards, 1837’ species complex, but is distinguished from its congeners by the dactylus of the last three pereiopods, the position of the hepatic spine, the proportions of the segments of the antennular peduncle, and other subtle but constant features.

A New Species

A new species of sea spider is described from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Anoplodactylus perissoporus n.sp. is in a species complex of extremely slender and tenuous forms that have serrated heel spines and are known to inhabit Indo- West Pacific coral reefs. The new species is characterized by the multiple cement gland pores on femora of males. Otherwise the species is very similar to, and probably closely related to A. tenuicorpus. The species boundaries within the A. tenuicorpus complex are difficult to discern and are not clearly defined, especially for females. Other character sets seem necessary to indicate affinities and distribution patterns of the tenuicorpus complex.

Microglanis carlae, new species, is described from the río Paraguay basin and distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: paired and anal fins mottled or with thin faint bands, trunk with dark-brown saddles, anterior margin of pectoral spine with serrations retrorse proximally and antrorse distally, tip of pectoral spine as a distinct bony point, continuous portion of lateral line reaching vertical through last dorsal-fin ray, caudal peduncle with irregularly shaped, faint to dark blotch, maxillary barbel surpassing vertical through dorsal-spine origin, and dark bar on posterior flank continuous from base of adipose fin to that of anal fin. The new species is included in the Microglanis parahybae species complex on the basis of color pattern.

A New Species

The present study focuses on shrimps belonging to the genus Lysmata Risso, 1816, collected from Madagascar during the Atimo Vatae expedition carried out in 2010. Lysmata malagasy sp. nov. is a new species belonging to the clade named “long accessory ramous” or “cosmopolitan” in previous phylogenetic studies. The new species can be distinguished from the only two other representatives of this group in the Indo-west Pacific, L. ternatensis De Man, 1902, and L. trisetacea (Heller, 1861), by the accessory ramus of the lateral antennular flagellum consisting of four elongated articles. Lysmata lipkei Okuno & Fiedler, 2010 is reported here from Madagascar with a remarkable extension of its known range after its original description from Japan. This species has also been reported from Singapore and, as alien species, from Brazil. Lastly, L. kuekenthali De Man, 1902 known from numerous localities in the Indo-West Pacific biogeographic area, is reported for the first time from Madagascar. Results of the present morphological and molecular analyses suggest that L. hochi Baeza & Anker, 2008 from the Caribbean Sea is a synonym of the Indo-West Pacific L. kuekenthali, and thus the latter species is alien in the western Atlantic.
