Samples collected during the Sergipe Continental Slope Environmental Characterization Project coordinated by PETROBRAS (The Brazilian Petroleum Company) revealed a new species of the family Pseudotachidiidae Lang, 1936 (Copepoda, Harpacticoida), Pseudomesochra longiseta sp. nov. This is the first record of the genus Pseudomesochra T. Scott, 1902 for the South Atlantic. Pseudomesochra longiseta sp. nov. can be distinguished from all species of the genus Pseudomesochra by the presence of four sensilla on the rostrum and a very long terminal “rat-tail” seta on the second segment of the antenna. It shares with P. tamara Smirnov, 1946 the addition of one inner seta on the first exopodal segment of the swimming legs 2–4 (P2–P4), a character absent in the remaining species of the genus. Pseudomesochra longiseta sp. nov. is the fourth species described within this genus with 2-segmented P2–P4 endopods. The inclusion of the new species in Pseudomesochra requires the modification of some autapomorphic characters of the genus, the most important being the presence of four sensilla on the rostrum, a character shared with other Pseudotachidiidae.

Sediment samples were collected from the deep sea adjacent to the State of Sergipe (Northeastern Brazil) within the framework of the Sergipe Continental Slope Environmental Characterization Project (coordinated by PETROBRAS, the Brazilian Petroleum Company S/A). These revealed a new species of the family Paramesochridae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida). Kliopsyllus minor sp. nov. is the smallest species discovered in this genus, with a body length of 0.19 mm in the adult male. Furthermore, it is one of the three Kliopsyllus species registered from the deep sea so far. In almost all Kliopsyllus species, the endopod of P4 is one-segmented. Only three species, i.e. Kliopsyllus andeep Veit-Köhler, 2004 from the abyssal Weddell Sea, a new species by Veit-Köhler and Thistle from the San Diego Trough (deep Pacific Ocean) and the new species presented here, show a two-segmented endopod in the P4. Kliopsyllus andeep is distinguished by the presence of strong, chitinous processes at the telson, and additional setae at the endopods of P3 and P4. The new Pacific species and the new species from Brazil can be distinguished by the shape of the segments of the swimming legs and detailed characteristics of their setae and spines.

A new species of the genusOnchidorisis described from the south-western Atlantic, on the coast of Brazil, in the States of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. To date, the genusOnchidorisis known almost exclusively from the northern hemisphere, especially the Atlantic coast of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. The single previous record from the southern hemisphere isOnchidoris maugeansis, described from Australia. This is the first record of the family Onchidorididae from the coast of Brazil.Onchidoris brasiliensissp. nov. is very similar toOnchidoris depressa, from England and the northern coast of Spain, but is distinguished by the presence of a triangular protuberance on the edge of the inner lateral radular tooth and a wide closed branchial circle with tubercles inside. Furthermore, the egg mass of O.brasiliensissp. nov. contains a single row of eggs, whereas that ofO. depressahas multiple rows.Onchidoris brasiliensissp. nov. has lecithotrophic development, the first record of this type of development in the genus. There is a relationship betweenO. brasiliensissp. nov. and the bryozoanParasmittina protecta.

A new species of the genus Acantholaimus is described from the South Atlantic, in the Potiguar Basin off the continental shelf of northeast Brazil. Acantholaimus marliae sp. n. is characterized by the long body; numerous somatic setae arranged in four sublateral longitudinal rows; buccal cavity with five solid teeth (four subventral and one dorsal), with the largest tooth dorsally located and the most protuberant between the subventral teeth shaped similarly to a "bottle opener"; and spiral fovea amphidialis. Acantholaimus marliae sp. n. is the only species described for the genus that has a spiral fovea amphidialis. This is the fifth species of Acantholaimus described from shallow water. An emended diagnosis of the genus is provided.

A species of the genus Isoperla Banks, 1906, I. oncocauda Huo & Du, sp. nov. is described as new to science and is the first record for the family Perlodidae from the Tianmu Mountain Nature Reserve, Zhejiang Province of eastern coastal China. Both sexes of the new species are characterized by tergum 10 with a developed process. The partially extruded aedeagus of the male is membranous without conspicuous larger sclerites and with the ventral surface covered with dense scale-like and nail-shaped spines.

The genus Smacigastes Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004 (Harpacticoida, Copepoda) is the most primitive genus in the family Tegastidae Sars, 1904, occurring in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls and wood falls. Our exploration of the Onnuri Vent Field, the sixth active hydrothermal vent system in the Central Indian Ridge, resulted in the discovery of a new species in the genus Smacigastes. A detailed morphological analysis of S. pumilasp. nov. reveals that it most resembles S. barti Gollner, Ivanenko & Martínez Arbizu, 2008, described from a hydrothermal vent in the East Pacific Ridge; the new species can be distinguished from the existing species by the 8-segmented female antennule, the absence of an abexopodal seta on the antennary basis, the mandibular exopod represented by a single seta and the exopod of the first leg with five setae. This is the first record of Smacigastes in the Indian Ocean. A dichotomous key to species of the genus Smacigastes worldwide is provided.

A new species of the serpulid genus Metavermilia Bush, 1905 and a new record of the genus Omphalopomopsis Saint-Joseph, 1894 are described from deep-sea lava rocks collected from 2,013 m at Cross Seamount, southwest of the Hawaiiarchipelago. Metavermilia zibrowii sp. nov., differs from its congeners mostly by the presence of a simple and concaveoperculum, extent of the thoracic membrane and tube morphology. Omphalopomopsis langerhansii (Marenzeller, 1885)is the type species of the genus and it is only known through its type specimen. This species is characterized by a simpleoperculum with a shallow convex calcareous endplate, cylindrical peduncle, presence of Apomatus chaetae and high num-ber of teeth in the thoracic uncini. This is the first record of this species outside the type locality and both genera are newly recorded for the Hawaiian Islands.

Priogymnanthus colombianus, a new species and the first record of the South American genus of Oleaceae for Colombia is described and illustrated also we present a dichotomic key for the known species of genus. The new species differs from the three knowns for Priogymnanthus by: leaves oblong or oblong-elliptic, completely glabrous, petioles 10–17 (19) mm; inflorescences 15–20 (25) mm in length, with glabrous rachis, anthers about 3 mm length; fruits (10) 12–15 mm in diameter. P. colombianus occurs on premontane and dry forest in Colombia between 719 and 1213 m of elevation. Based on general threats to its ecosystems and few records found, we categorize the species as EN (endangered) following IUCN criteria.

The whip spider genus Phrynichus (Phrynichidae, Amblypygi) is widely distributed in Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Asia with a total of 17 species. No records, however, are known from several countries in the Middle East. Here we provide the first record of a whip spider from Iran (Ilam Province), with the description and illustration of a new species, Phrynichus persicus sp. n. This discovery fills a gap in the distribution of the group that is known from both sides of this biogeographically interesting region and is also the northernmost record of the family Phrynichidae. Moreover, all distribution records of the Phrynichus species are mapped (including the first verified record of the order from the United Arab Emirates), an updated key to the species of the deflersi and ceylonicus groups is provided, and Phrynichus andhraensis Bastawade, Rao, Maqsood Javed and Krishna, 2005 (India) is assigned to the ceylonicus group.
