A new species of Hemus (Majoidea: Majidae: Mithracinae) from the Pacific coast of Panamá, with a key to the genus

A new species of spider crab, Hemus magalae n. sp. (Majidae), is described from a single male specimen from Islas de las Perlas, Pacific Ocean coast of Panamá. This species differs from its congeners with respect to many features of the carapace including mid-line elevation and lateral dentition. Hemus A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, now includes four species, three from coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean and one from shallow waters in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. A key to the Pacific and Atlantic species of Hemus is provided.

Marine heterobranch slugs of the order Runcinida comprise 61 species, most of which inhabit the Atlantic Ocean and are referred to the genus Runcina. The Runcinida of the Pacific Ocean have been much less studied to date: only 12 species, from the genera Metaruncina Baba, 1967, Rfemsia Chernyshev, 1999, Runcinida Burn, 1963, Runcinella Odhner, 1924, Pseudoilbia M. C. Miller & Rudman, 1968, and Runcina Forbes [in Forbes and Hanley], 1851, have been described from the region. Metaruncina, Rfemsia, and Runcinida are found in the Pacific Ocean only (Baba 1954, 1967; Burn 1963; Gosliner 1991; Chernyshev 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006). The genus Metaruncina, endemic from the Pacific coast of Asia, includes two species: M. setoensis (Baba, 1954) and M. nhatrangensis Chernyshev, 2005. The latter is the only runcinid described from the coastal waters of the South China Sea, where it was found in the bays of Nha Trang and Van Phong (Chernyshev 2005). During subsequent expeditions to the coastal waters of Vietnam, this species was also recorded from off Tho Chu Island (09°19’N, 103°30’E) and off Nam Du Island (09°43′ N, 104°23′ E). However, in addition to this common species, an undescribed species of Metaruncina was collected. A description of this new species is provided in the present paper. Type material was deposited at the Museum of the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS, Vladivostok, Russia (MIMB).

A new species of symbiotic palaemonid shrimp, Periclimenaeus mcmichaeli sp. nov., is described based on a single male specimen collected near Dry Tortugas, Florida, in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. This new species, the 14th now known for the genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile 1915 from the western Atlantic, is morphologically most similar to P. wilsoni (Hay, 1917), from which it can be separated by the presence in the new species of two small subdistal teeth on the ventral margin of the rostrum, absence of small spinules or tubercles on ventral margin of the meri of the major and minor chelipeds, presence of three teeth on the cutting edge of the dactylus of the minor chela, and position of dorsal spines on the telson. The presence in this new species of a prominent acute projection on each pleurae of the third and fourth somite is documented, and appears to be a character previously overlooked in the taxonomic literature of species of the genus. This new species is compared with other similar congeners from the western Atlantic as well as other oceanic regions. An updated diagnosis for P. wilsoni, and a key to identify the western Atlantic species of the genus, are also presented.

A new species of caprellid, Deutella mazatlanensis n. sp., is described from Mazatlán Bay, (east Pacific México). Deutella mazatlanensis was found associated with bryozoans, hydroids and sponges in shallow waters. The new species can be differentiated from the remaining species of the genus mainly by the dorsal, anteriorly directed projection on the head; the two dorsal projections and a lateral acute projection anteroventrally projected on pereonite 2 and gnathopod 2 in males. The presence of this species on the Mexican Pacific coast, constitutes the fourth report of Deutella genus for the Pacific Ocean and the first record from the tropical Eastern Pacific.

The gempylid fish genus Epinnula is reviewed and two species are recognized. The type species E. magistralis is considered restricted to the western Atlantic Ocean and a new species from the Pacific Ocean is described. The new species, Epinnula pacifica sp. nov., can be distinguished from E. magistralis by 17 or 18 dorsal-fin rays (vs. 15 or 16 in E. magistralis), 15 or 16 anal-fin rays (vs. 13 or 14), 247–268 total scales on lower lateral line (vs. 285–330), a deeper body, relatively high dorsal fin as reflected by the relatively long fin spines and rays, longer dorsal-fin and anal-fin bases, longer pectoral fin, and longer pelvic fin and pelvic spine.
