Abstract. Plastic debris is the most common and exponentially increasing human pollutant in the world's ocean. The distribution and impact of plastic in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans have been the subject of many publications but not so the Indian Ocean (IO). Some of the IO rim countries have the highest population densities globally and mismanagement of plastic waste is of concern in many of these rim states. Some of the most plastic-polluted rivers empty into the IO, with all this suggesting that the IO receives a tremendous amount of plastic debris each year. However, the concentration, distribution, and impacts of plastics in the IO are poorly understood as the region is under-sampled compared to other oceans. In this review, we discuss sources and sinks, which are specific to the IO. We also discuss unique atmospheric, oceanographic, and topographic features of the IO that control plastic distribution, such as reversing wind directions due to the monsoon, fronts, and upwelling regions. We identify hotspots of possible plastic accumulation in the IO, which differ between the two hemispheres. In the southern IO, plastics accumulate in a garbage patch in the subtropical gyre. However, this garbage patch is not well defined, and plastics may leak into the southern Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean. There is no subtropical gyre and associated garbage in the northern IO due to the presence of landmasses. Instead, the majority of buoyant plastics most likely end up on coastlines. Finally, we identify the vast knowledge gaps concerning plastics in the IO and point to the most pressing topics for future investigation.

Pacific Ocean tuna is among the most-consumed seafood products but contains relatively high levels of the neurotoxin methylmercury. Limited observations suggest tuna mercury levels vary in space and time, yet the drivers are not well understood. Here, we map mercury concentrations in skipjack tuna across the Pacific Ocean and build generalized additive models to quantify the anthropogenic, ecological, and biogeochemical drivers. Skipjack mercury levels display a fivefold spatial gradient, with maximum concentrations in the northwest near Asia, intermediate values in the east, and the lowest levels in the west, southwest, and central Pacific. Large spatial differences can be explained by the depth of the seawater methylmercury peak near low-oxygen zones, leading to enhanced tuna mercury concentrations in regions where oxygen depletion is shallow. Despite this natural biogeochemical control, the mercury hotspot in tuna caught near Asia is explained by elevated atmospheric mercury concentrations and/or mercury river inputs to the coastal shelf. While we cannot ignore the legacy mercury contribution from other regions to the Pacific Ocean (e.g., North America and Europe), our results suggest that recent anthropogenic mercury release, which is currently largest in Asia, contributes directly to present-day human mercury exposure.

ABSTRACT. Association between the EI- Nino events in the Pacific Ocean and the crop yields in India has been examined. Five districts,viz. Churu, Gwalior, Rewa, Palamau and Bankura located on the normal   monsoon trough zone and cultivating altogether different, mostly rainfed crops, were selected for the study. Crop and seasonal rainfall data from 1951-88 were utilised in the analysis.   The results indicate that the EI-Nino phenomenon does not exert much influence on the kharif. In wave models with cons crops in India.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an alphavirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which causes Chikungunya fever. Three CHIKV genotypes have been identified: West African, East-Central-South African and Asian. In 2014, CHIKV was detected for the first time in Mexico, accumulating 13,569 confirmed cases in the following three years. Studies on the molecular diversification of CHIKV in Mexico focused on limited geographic regions or investigated only one structural gene of the virus. To describe the dynamics of this outbreak, we analyzed 309 serum samples from CHIKV acute clinical cases from 15 Mexican states. Partial NSP3, E1, and E2 genes were sequenced, mutations were identified, and their genetic variability was estimated. The evolutionary relationship with CHIKV sequences sampled globally were analyzed. Our sequences grouped with the Asian genotype within the Caribbean lineage, suggesting that the Asian was the only circulating genotype during the outbreak. Three non-synonymous mutations (E2 S248F and NSP3 A437T and L451F) were present in our sequences, which were also identified in sequences of the Caribbean lineage and in one Philippine sequence. Based on the phylogeographic analysis, the viral spread was reconstructed, suggesting that after the introduction through the Mexican southern border (Chiapas), CHIKV dispersed to neighboring states before reaching the center and north of the country through the Pacific Ocean states and Quintana Roo. This is the first viral phylogeographic reconstruction in Mexico characterizing the CHIKV outbreak across the country.

Neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) and jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas) are two commercially essential oceanic squids in the Pacific Ocean. An in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of their annual and interannual abundance fluctuations under environmental and climate variabilities can ensure ration and suitable management. Thus, the annual and interannual abundance fluctuations of the stock of the western winter-spring cohort of O. bartramii and D. gigas off Peru Exclusive Economic Zone (PEEZ) waters and their association with habitat temperature variabilities are explored in this study based on the historical Chinese Squid-jigging fishery data from 2003 to 2020. The habitat temperature variabilities were defined as the effective principal components of the SST at the squids’ two important habitats (spawning and feeding ground) through life histories according to the principal component analysis. The Hodrick—Prescott filter analysis was conducted to quantify the annual and interannual fluctuations of abundance and habitat temperature variabilities. Furthermore, the generalized additive model (GAM) was employed to investigate their associations. The results demonstrated different but not synchronous trends of abundance for O. bartramii and D. gigas. Regarding O. bartramii, the interannual abundance first decreased (2003∼2013) and then increased (after 2014). For D. gigas, the interannual abundance kept decreasing within 2003∼2020. Their annual trends have presented large fluctuations over years. The results of GAM indicated that using habitat temperature variabilities only can trace the abundance trend of O. bartramii and D. gigas at an interannual but not annual scale. Further studies verified that Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is a crucial factor affecting the interannual abundance trend of these two squids through the habitat temperature variabilities. However, this study indicates that the habitat temperature variabilities not only are related to other large-scale factors, which are not investigated currently at an interannual scale, but also, are combined with other small- or middle-scale factors at an annual scale on their impacts to the abundance fluctuations of these two squids. Therefore, in order to better explain the mechanisms of annual and interannual abundance fluctuations of O. bartramii and D. gigas under environmental and climate variabilities, the importance of combining other potential factors into consideration is highlighted.

As an ethical and aesthetic mandate for the new millenium, the Cold War repression of Hiroshima within the American political imaginaryneeds to be symbolically confronted and undoneat national as well as global levels.As Americans and as Japanese citizens of the liberal global order, we must mutually move beyond the Cold War situation of historical repression that had obtained in 1965, when novelist Kenzaburo Ōelamented, “To put the matter plainly and bluntly, people everywhere on this earth are trying to forget Hiroshima and the unspeakable tragedy perpetrated there.” However traumatic, Americans and their allies must try to remember this Hiroshima sublimeas a trauma of geopolitical dominationand racialized hegemony across the Pacific Ocean. By thinking through and re-imagining the techno-euphoric grandeur of this Hiroshima sublime, as well as representing the ideological complicity of ordinary Americans in their own sublime (rapturedby these technological forces of sublimity as manifesting and globally installingPatriot missilesas signs of theirglobal supremacy) and ordinary Japanese (citizens of the Empire of the Sun fascinatedby self-sublation into zeros of solar force) in the production of this nuclear sublime, we can begin to mutually recognize that a ‘post-nuclear’era offers new possibilities and symbolic ties between America and Japan as Pacific powers. This post-nuclear era emerges out of World War II freighted with terror and wonder as a double possibility:at once urging the globe towards annihilation andyet also towards transactional and dialogical unityat the transnational border of national self-imagining. The phobic masochism of the sublime can no longer operate in a transnational world of global/local linkages, although the technological sublimity of the Persian Gulf War had suggested otherwise, withits “sublime Patriot”missiles and quasi-nuclear landscapes lingering in the world deserts from Iraq and Afganistan to Nevada and North Korea.
