Review of the fish genus Epinnula Poey (Perciformes: Gempylidae), with description of a new species from the Pacific Ocean

The gempylid fish genus Epinnula is reviewed and two species are recognized. The type species E. magistralis is considered restricted to the western Atlantic Ocean and a new species from the Pacific Ocean is described. The new species, Epinnula pacifica sp. nov., can be distinguished from E. magistralis by 17 or 18 dorsal-fin rays (vs. 15 or 16 in E. magistralis), 15 or 16 anal-fin rays (vs. 13 or 14), 247–268 total scales on lower lateral line (vs. 285–330), a deeper body, relatively high dorsal fin as reflected by the relatively long fin spines and rays, longer dorsal-fin and anal-fin bases, longer pectoral fin, and longer pelvic fin and pelvic spine.

Mugil setosus Gilbert 1892 was originally described by Gilbert based on specimens from Clarion Island, in the western and most remote of the Revillagigedo Islands, about 1,000 km off the western Pacific coast of Mexico. Examination of the type of material and recently collected specimens from Ecuador and Peru, resulted in the redescription provided herein. Diagnostic characters of the species were mainly: tip of the pelvic fin reaching beyond the vertical through the base of the third dorsal-fin spine, the pectoral-fin rays with ii+13–14 rays, the anterodorsal tip of second (soft) dorsal fin uniformly dark, and an external row of larger teeth, and more internally a patch of scattered smaller teeth, visible mainly in adults 150 mm SL. The expansion of geographic distribution of Mugil setosus and occurrence of Mugil curema Valenciennes 1836 in the Pacific Ocean are discussed.

A new species of ptereleotrine dartfish, Navigobius asayake, is described based on four specimens (45.0–52.1 mm in standard length: SL) collected from off the Satsuma Peninsula and Tanegashima island, Kagoshima, southern Japan. It is distinguished from other congeners by the following combination of characters: second dorsal-fin rays I, 18–19; anal-fin rays I, 19; pectoral-fin rays 21–22; gill rakers 5–6 + 13–15; head length 25.1–26.4% SL; eye diameter 8.6–10.0% SL; pelvic-fin length 15.2–16.1% SL; and a well-developed yellow stripe extending from behind upper part of eye to beneath first dorsal fin.

A new species of Astyanax from the upper rio Paraguaçu basin, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, is described. Astyanax sincora shares characters currently used to define the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, as highest body depth approximately at vertical through pectoral-fin midlength and a low number of branched anal-fin rays (13–17). It differs from its congeners by a combination of characters, including eight branched dorsal-fin rays, six branched pelvic-fin rays, presence of bony hooks in pectoral and anal fins of males, dark midlateral line or stripe initiating posteriorly to the vertically elongate humeral blotch, and by the presence of 30–35 scales in the median longitudinal series. The generic positioning of the new species and some polymorphic morphological characters in Astyanax are briefly discussed. A new species of Mysidium from the eastern tropical Pacific, Mexico, is described, representing the second species of this genus described for the Pacific Ocean and the eighth species reported worldwide. Mysidium pumae sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the genus by several characters including: the lanceolate appendix masculina, 3× as long as wide, tapering distally, with a distal tuft of 16 setae and an inner proximal tuft of more than 30 setae, the male pleopod 4 with endopod bearing 3 setae, the exopod with 4 articles, the modified seta from article 3 of the exopod bifid, telson 2.3× as long as wide, distally concave. A table with the main differences among all the known species in the genus is provided.

A new species of Hyalascus is described from the submarine volcanic crater seamount of Andaman Back-arc Basin, Indian Ocean. The genus was previously known in the Pacific Ocean only.

A new species,T. strongylatasp. nov. is described on the basis of material collected from the Pacific Ocean. The new species is characterized by the presence of sinuous strongyles. Moreover the incomplete description ofT. simplex(Sarà, 1959) is implemented on the basis of new abundant material allowing, for the first time, the complete description of the skeleton of aTriptolemmaspecies and the detecting of the presence of monaxonic spicules in the spicular complement of the genus. The skeleton is composed of a thick crust of disorderly arranged mesotriaenes and scattered microscleres, supported by diverging spicule tracts formed by oxeas towards the surface. Both species were recorded associated to boring sponges(SpiroxyaandCliona)in excavations of the calcareous scleraxis of precious corals or in organogenic concretions. In the cavities where the tissue ofTriptolemmawas recorded the wall of the excavation partially lost its typical pattern characterized by ovoid scars and became irregularly eroded. Our hypothesis is thatTriptolemmainsinuates inside the erosions produced by other sponges and it is able to enlarge them by an etching mechanism based on chemical dissolution only.

During a recent expedition to St. Paul’s Rocks, Atlantic Ocean, a distinctive and previously unknown species of Anthiadinae was collected at a depth of 120 m. A genetic analysis indicated the undescribed species is a member of the genus Tosanoides, which was only known to occur in the Pacific Ocean. This new taxon is distinguishable from all other Tosanoides species by the following combination of characters: soft dorsal fin rays 15–16; anal fin rays 9; ventral scale rows 9–10; last dorsal spine the longest (instead first through fourth). Here Tosanoidesaphroditesp. n. is described and illustrated, only known from St. Paul’s Rocks.
