Batasio convexirostrum, a new bagrid catfish, is described from the Koladyne drainage, Mizoram, India. It is distinguished from congeners by a combination of the following characters: body with a dark-brown oblique predorsal bar on a uniform light-brown background; very short dorsal to adipose distance (1.7–4.1% SL); snout length 39.2–45.5% head length; eye diameter 24.6–29.8% head length; gill rakers on the first branchial arch 4–5; pectoral spine length 14.6–17.6% standard length; adipose-fin base length 31.0–34.9% standard length; post-adipose distance 10.6–13.7% standard length; branched pectoral fin rays 9–10; and 39–40 vertebrae.

We describe a new species of pimelodid catfish of the genus Iheringichthys from the upper Paraná basin, Brazil. Iheringichthys syi n. sp. is distinguished by the comparatively fine serration along the anterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine, an adpressed dorsal-fin remote from the adipose-fin origin, a large eye (23.2-31.2% of head length), narrow interorbital (16.2-23.0% of head length), long snout (42.0-51.0% of head length), long postorbital length (30.6-34.0% of head length), low adipose fin (4.8-7.8% of standard length), eye diameter 97.0-140.0% of interorbital length, and body with numerous, small dots irregularly scattered on flanks, especially marked on anterior half of flank.

Akysis bilustris, new species, is described from the Xe Kong drainage (a subdrainage of the Mekong River) in southern Laos. It is distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: eye diameter 14.0– 17.5% HL, serrae on posterior margin of pectoral spine 2–3 and longer than half width of spine, pectoral fin reaching to or overlapping pelvic-fin base (length 24.5–29.3% SL), adipose-fin base length 14.3–18.3% SL, body depth at anus 11.4– 13.8% SL, caudal-peduncle length 19.6–23.4% SL, caudal-peduncle depth 6.7–9.2% SL, caudal fin emarginate, and vertebrae 30–31.

Pseudobagarius eustictus, new species, is described from the Nam Heung drainage (a tributary of the Mekong River) in northern Laos. It is distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: a weakly-produced snout in which the upper jaw extends only slightly beyond the margin of the lower jaw when viewed ventrally, 3 tubercles on the posterior margin of the pectoral spine, eye diameter 8% HL, head width 24.1% SL, dark yellow dorsal and lateral surfaces of the head, pectoral spine lacking elongate extensions, pectoral fin reaching the pelvic-fin base when adpressed against the body, dorsolateral surfaces of body without longitudinal series of prominent tubercles, body depth at anus 13.7% SL, length of adipose-fin base 17.7% SL, caudal-peduncle depth 7.0% SL, and 33 vertebrae.

This study describes Pseudolaguvia viriosa, a new miniature sisorid catfish from the Brahmaputra River drainage in Ar-unachal Pradesh, northeastern India. Pseudolaguvia viriosa can be distinguished from congeners in having a combinationof: eye diameter 10–15% HL, interorbital distance 35–38% HL, head width 21.5–23.5% SL, thoracic adhesive apparatusreaching beyond base of last pectoral-fin ray, pectoral spine length 26.9–32.9% SL, dorsal spine length 23.4–29.0% SL,dorsal spine with anterior edge smooth or with rugose surface only on distal third of spine, body depth at anus 16.9–19.0%SL, length of adipose-fin base 12.5–15.4% SL, caudal peduncle length 14.8–17.7% SL, caudal peduncle depth 7.4–9.8% SL, caudal-fin length 26.5–32.4% SL, 28–29 vertebrae, and one or more distinct pale bands encircling body.

ABSTRACT The species Rhamdia branneri Haseman, 1911 and the subspecies Rhamdia branneri voulezi Haseman, 1911 from rio Iguaçu are currently recognized as synonyms of Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). However, recent karyotype and ecomorphology studies distinguish R. branneri and R. voulezi as different species. Examination of Rhamdia populations from rio Iguaçu, including type specimens, together with other congeners from rio Tibagi, allowed to properly reexamine the situation of these Haseman's taxa and references given to Rhamdia in the Iguaçu. The species R. branneri and R. voulezi have strong serrae with large basis on both margins of the pectoral-fin spine, uncommon in the remaining species of Rhamdia and different from the fine serrate margins of the pectoral spine of R. quelen ; a regular dorsal profile, slightly curved between supraoccipital and dorsal fin; with dorsal dark-brown or light-gray coloration along body, abdomen pale, without profuse small black spots, common in populations of the upper Paraná species and the type-material of R. quelen . Also the following morphometric characters discriminate these species: Rhamdia voulezi , adipose fin elongate; smaller distance between dorsal and adipose fin; smaller length between adipose fin to base of caudal fin and smaller distance from posterior margin of eye to opercular border. Rhamdia branneri , larger distance from dorsal and adipose fins; deeper caudal peduncle; higher trunk depth in the vertical distance through adipose, between pelvic and anal fins; larger scapular bridge; shorter maxillary barbel; shorter external mental barbel; shorter interorbital distance; shorter length of dorsal fin basis and shorter adipose-fin base length. A PCA between the populations of Rhamdia from Iguaçu and a population from rio Tibagi, upper Paraná basin, discriminates the population from Tibagi on basis of dorsal to adipose fin distance, dorsal-fin spine length, maxillary barbel length, eye diameter, and pectoral-fin spine length. This morphometric study allied to the karyotype known differences suggest R. branneri and R. voulezi as valid species. The complex state of R. quelen with the neotype recently designated from rio Samiria recommend new studies on basis of molecular genetics and provision of the names R. branneri and R. voulezi in the Iguaçu basin.

A new species of bagrid catfish of the genus Rita is described from the Indus River drainage in South Asia. Rita macracanthus differs from all congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: dorsal spine reaching to middle of adipose-fin base; pectoral-spine length 28.7 30.0% SL; depth of caudal peduncle 7.6 8.4% SL; maximum length of premaxillary tooth band 4.8 6.4 times its maximum width; eye diameter 6.9 8.7% HL; interorbital distance 39.4 44.1% HL; dorsal surface of head between eyes and supraoccipital covered with thin skin wherein the underlying bone is visible; two distinct vomerine tooth patches with rounded peg-like teeth. The new species has been identified up until now as Rita rita, but is distinguished from that species in having longer dorsal and pectoral spines, a more slender caudal peduncle, and a longer premaxillary tooth band.

Microglanis leptostriatus n. sp. is described from the middle-upper rio São Francisco basin. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: light transverse stripe, located in occipital region between the opercular openings, thin and sinuous; pale region below dorsal and adipose fins mottled with brown spots; and a dark stripe in the axis of gill filaments in alcohol preserved specimens. Microglanis leptostriatus is further distinguished from M. parahybae and M. garavelloi, the closest species geographically, by having the following combination of characters: longer head length [28.3–32.1% of SL (mean = 30.0) versus 25.5–28.5% (mean = 27.2) and 25.2–30.2 (mean = 28.0), respectively], shorter dorsal spine length [11.7–14.9% of SL (mean = 13.6) versus 14.1–18.1% (mean = 16.0) and 11.3–19.0 (mean = 15.5)], shorter pectoral spine length [12.5–19.7% of SL (mean = 17.4) versus 19.4–22.7% (mean = 20.6) and 18.5–26.2 (mean = 22.1)].

Hemiancistrus cerrado is described from the tributaries of rio Araguaia, rio Tocantins basin. Hemiancistrus cerrado has external similarities with H. megalopteryx and H. punctulatus from coastal streams of southern Brazil, and can be distinguished by having a larger internarial width, 15.9-21.1% of head length (vs. 11.2-14.0% in H. megalopteryx and 11.2-13.9% in H. punctulatus) and, with little overlap, by the larger adipose-fin spine length, 9.4-13.6% of standard length (vs. 7.1-8.7% in H. megalopteryx and 7.4-10.0% in H. punctulatus). Hemiancistrus cerrado further differs from H. megalopteryx by having the pectoral-fin spine reaching maximally to the middle of the pelvic-fin spine when adpressed in adult males (vs. reaching tip). Hemiancistrus cerrado differs from other members of Hemiancistrus by color and numerous morphometric and meristic data.

Pseudolaguvia ferula, a new species of erethistid catish, is described from the Brahmaputra River drainage in India. It can be distinguished from congeners in having a terete (vs. depressed) head and body, manifested in the narrower head width (17.1–19.1% SL vs. 19.4–23.4), a smaller anterior fontanel (about one third the length of the frontals vs. at least half the length), and very faint, poorly contrasting cream bands that are sometimes absent on some individuals (vs. sharply contrasting cream bands on a brown body). It can be further distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: dorsal-spine length 17.3–18.7% SL, pectoral-spine length 20.2–24.3% SL, pelvic-fin length 13.0–14.7% SL, length of adipose-fin base 11.5–13.0% SL, caudal peduncle depth 6.9–7.8% SL, body depth at anus 12.1–13.8% SL, eye diameter 8.6–11.7% HL, vertebrae 28–30, and thoracic adhesive apparatus reaching to midway between bases of last pectoral-fin ray and first pelvic-fin ray. with its unculiferous ridges joined at their posterior ends.

The morphometric observations were made on total length, standard length, pre-caudal length, head length, eye diameter and depth of body at pectoral fin base of estuarine catfish M. gulio. Males and females showed homogeneity in characters. A linear relationship was found between total length and morphometric characters. Regression of length and weight did not deviate significantly from cube law indicating isometric growth. The fish exhibited sexual dimorphism.
