A new genus and ten new species of jumping plant lice (Hemiptera: Triozidae) from Allocasuarina (Casuarinaceae) in Australia

Twelve species of jumping plant lice, Hemiptera: Psylloidea, in two genera are recognised from plants of the genus Allocasuarina (Casuarinaceae) in Australia. Aacanthocnema Tuthill & Taylor comprises two species that are here redescribed, Aa. casuarinae (Froggatt) and Aa. dobsoni (Froggatt), together with four new species, Aa. burckhardti Taylor, Aa. huegelianae Taylor, Aa. luehmannii Taylor, and Aa. torulosae Taylor. A new genus, Acanthocasuarina Taylor, comprises six new species: Ac. acutivalvis Taylor, Ac. campestris Taylor, Ac. diminutae Taylor, Ac. muellerianae Taylor, Ac. tasmanica Taylor, and Ac. verticillatae Taylor. Both genera are characterised by an elongate habitus, short Rs and short, triangular radial and cubital fore wing cells, ventrally produced genal processes beneath angular, overhanging apical margin of vertex, antennae short, and nymphs characteristically elongate, heavily sclerotised and scale-like. Species of Acanthocasuarina have rhinaria on antennal segments 4, 6, 8 and 9, the hind tibia has 1 outer and 2 inner spurs and the female proctiger has a posterior apical hook. In contrast, species of Aacanthocnema lack rhinaria on antennal segment 8 and sclerotised spurs on the hind tibia, and the female lacks a posterior apical hook on the proctiger. Trioza banksiae Froggatt stat. rev. is removed from Aacanthocnema. Keys to genera and species are provided, together with notes on their biology, host associations and biogeography.

A new genus, Casuarinicola Taylor gen. nov., comprising five new species of jumping plant lice (Hemiptera: Triozidae) from Casuarina s.s. (Casuarinaceae) from Australia and New Caledonia, is described. New species are: C. australis Taylor sp. nov., C. nigrimaculatus Taylor sp. nov., C. mucronalatus Taylor sp. nov., C. novacaledonica Taylor sp. nov. and C. warrigalensis Taylor sp. nov. The genus is characterised by the following combination of characters: antenna short, 1.1–1.5 times width of head, genal processes short, conical, 0.2–0.5 times length of vertex, fore wing with broadly rounded to subangular apex, mottled with dark markings (in females of most species) or clear (in males of most species), male proctiger short, with broad lateral expansions, parameres simple, and female proctiger short, broadly rounded, pointed apically and with a pair of broad, flange-shaped lateral lobes. A key to species is provided, together with notes on host associations and distribution.

The genus Konothrips was erected by Bhatti (1990) for a single species, tuttlei, that was described from Arizona in the genus Chirothrips by zur Strassen (1967). The new genus was distinguished by the longitudinally orientated sculpture on the abdominal terga and sterna, the fore wing costa with only a single seta, and the ovipositor lacking teeth (Bhatti 1990). Subsequently, Nakahara and Foottit (2012) described in Konothrips a second species, colei, from Texas. However, those authors indicated that there is variation in these characters, with  colei intermediate in structure between tuttlei and members of Arorathrips. In the new species described below, the abdominal tergal and sternal sculpture is weakly developed, transverse medially with some reticles in the pleurotergites slightly orientated longitudinally, the ovipositor is reduced and smooth, and costal setae are present on the fore wing. This new species is described in Konothrips because antennal segment I is enlarged (more than 3 times wider than base of segment II), antennal segment II is strongly produced laterally, and the mesosternal furcal invaginations are widely separated. These characters are also shared with the species of Arorathrips, and distinguish this pair of genera from Chirothrips. However, the new species, together with tuttlei and colei, is distinguished from species placed in Arorathrips by the presence of more than 6 stout conical setae on the median area of the mesonotum, and the anterior abdominal tergites with D1 and D2 setae spine-like (conical and stout).

The new genus Altavelia Polhemus & Moreira (Heteroptera: Gerromorpha: Veliidae) includes seven species previously contained in the inveruglas group of Paravelia Breddin, 1898 and four new species from Colombia: A. altoandina Molano & Morales, A. antioquia Molano & Morales, A. montana Molano & Morales, and A. quindiana Molano & Morales. Additionally, A. amoena (Drake, 1957) is synonymized with A. flavomarginata (Hungerford, 1930). The genus is characterized by prominent setal tufts or sclerotized wing-like processes on the male proctiger; elongate body shape with long, slender legs; uniformly blackish forewings; antennal segment I longest; and the female abdomen with tergum VIII deflexed. Species in this genus occur at high elevations in the Andes Mountains with records from 1500 to 3600 m. A key is provided to all 11 species in the genus and new distributional records are presented for A. boliviana (Breddin, 1898), A. columbiensis (Hungerford, 1930), and A. flavomarginata.

We review the taxonomy of sponge-dwelling shrimp in the “Gambarelloides species group” within the genus Synalpheus Bate 1888, an informal but widely recognized group that is largely endemic to the western Atlantic and contains the majority of Synalpheus species in that region. The validity of most species described from the western Atlantic is reevaluated based on extensive new material from Carrie Bow Cay, Belize, and on examination of types of most described species. Twenty-eight species, including all those historically considered as part of the Gambarelloides group, are herein removed from Synalpheus and transferred to Zuzalpheus, n. gen., which is diagnosed by two synapomorphies: the dense brush of curved setae on the minor first pereopod, and the mesial lamellae on the coxae of the 3 rd pereopods. Six new species are described (Zuzalpheus dardeaui, Z. elizabethae, Z. idios, Z. kensleyi, Z. ul, Z. yano) and Z. osburni (Schmitt 1933) n. comb. is removed from synonymy with Synalpheus goodei. An identification key to all 34 species of West Atlantic Zuzalpheus is presented, as are known host associations, and color plates of most species.

A new genus and two new species of Sminthurinae are described. Keratosminthurus tapigu gen. nov. sp. nov. and K. calamitosus sp. nov. show a combination of features that redefines the subfamily Sminthurinae, such as a pair of sminthuroid chaetae, unguis without cavity, nine apical chaetae on tibiotarsus, 11 or more anterior dental chaetae, fourth antennal segment clearly subdivided into many (18 or more) subsegments, and asymmetric apex of mucro. The new genus also presents a striking sexual dimorphism, with modifications on male apical organ of antennal segment III, spines on the clypeus and special organs on the interocular area.

This paper presents the results of a study that was largely initiated to describe a genus and species of weevil damaging macadamia fruits in plantations in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. This taxon is described as Kuschelorhynchus macadamiae gen. et sp. n., the genus named in honour of the late Guillermo (Willy) Kuschel (1918–2017). The related genus Menechirus Hartmann is also revised, resulting in the description of three new species, M. howdenae sp. n., M. parryi sp. n. and M. mundus sp. n. The other genera of the small Australian weevil tribe Cryptoplini, Cryptoplus Erichson, Haplonyx Schoenherr, Sigastus Pascoe and Zeopus Pascoe, are diagnosed and their host associations summarised, and a revised diagnosis of the tribe Cryptoplini is presented, together with a key to its six genera. The extraordinary aedeagus of Cryptoplini, featuring a tectal plate as is characteristic of more primitive weevils, is discussed and illustrated.

ABSTRACT Brasergasilus jaraquensis gen. et sp. nov. and B. anodus sp. nov. (Copepoda: Cyclopidea: Ergasilidae), gill parasites of Semaprochiiodus insignis (Schomburgk) and Anodus elongatus Spix, are described from the Amazon River. The new genus has only three pairs of swimming legs and in this respect is similar only to one species from New Zealand, Abergasilus amplexus Hewitt, 1978. The two genera also have in common a three-segmented prehensile antenna. Abergasilus, however, has the base of the second antennal segment developed into a massive spine which abutts against the claw-like third segment. The new genus completely lacks this fundamental structure. Aditionally, Abergasilus has six free thoracic segments while the new genus only has five. Abergasilinae Subfam. nov. is proposed for these two genera and their three species. Ergasilinae nom. nov. is provisionally defined and proposed to include the other 11 genera of the family. The type species of Brasergasilus gen. nov. is B. jaraquensis sp. nov. and it can be distinguished from B. anodus sp. nov. by the following characteristics: 1) The type species is larger and of a greenish coloration while B. anodus has fewer pigment granules that are of a bluish tint. 2) B. jaraquensis has a more slender second antenna and the most abrupt bend of the claw occurs distally; the second antenna of B. anodus is thicker and the abrupt bend Is found proximally. 3) The uropod of the type species has two setae and two small spines, while that of the other species has three setae and lacks spines. 4) The first leg of B. jaraquensis is laterally serrate while that of B. anodus is pectinate. The two species parasitize two different genera of host fish and are probably host specific.

The Aleiodes bakeri (Brues) species subgroup of the A. seriatus species group is defined based on two previously described species, A. bakeri and A. nigristemmaticum (Enderlein), and is greatly expanded in this paper with an identification key, descriptions, and illustrations of 18 new species from the Neotropical Region: A. andinus Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; angustus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; asenjoi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; bahiensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; barrosi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; brevicarina Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; coariensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; goiasensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; gonodontivorus Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; hyalinus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; inga Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; joaquimi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; lidiae Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; mabelae Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; maculosus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; ovatus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; santarosensis Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; and taurus Shimbori & Penteado-Dias, sp. nov. It is hypothesized that the A. bakeri species subgroup is a monophyletic lineage within the larger and probably artificial A. seriatus species group (those Aleiodes with a comb of flat setae at the apex of the hind tibia), and can be distinguished from other members of the seriatus group by having the hind wing vein r present, although weakly indicated; the hind wing marginal cell suddenly widened at junction of veins RS and r; the subbasal cell of the fore wing mostly glabrous but often with two rows of short setae subapically; glabrous regions of the wings also commonly found in the first subdiscal, discal, and basal cells of the fore wing, and the basal cell of hind wing; ocelli quite large, with the width of a lateral ocellus being distinctly larger than the ocellar-ocular distance; and being relatively large Aleiodes species with body almost entirely brownish yellow or reddish brown. In addition, a new replacement name, Aleiodes buntikae Shimbori & Shaw, nom. nov., is proposed for the species formerly called Aleiodes (Hemigyroneuron) bakeri Butcher & Quicke, 2011.

The new genus Neobruchidius is described principally because of the single spine near the apex of the hind femur of all ten species. This and other characters differentiate it from other genera in the New World and ally it to the Old World genus Bruchidius, hence the name. Seven of the ten species of Neobruchidius were all originally described in the genus Acanthoscelides by Johnson and one is the new species Neobruchidius lovie. The nine species are Neobruchidius barinas, N. canar, N. curimagua, N. guatemala, N. lituratus, (Sharp), N. macheta, N. tabidus (Erichson), N. tibiospinalis, and N. zacatlan. A discussion of the genus is provided as is a key to species, and some comments on allometry in adult bruchids due to seed size of their hosts. Neobruchidius lovie differs from species in the genus Sennius principally by lacking hinge sclerites in the median lobe of the male genitalia and with a mucro on the apex of the hind tibia that is much shorter than 0.25 times as long as the first hind tarsomere. Most species of Sennius lack a mucro or almost so.
