Nine new lichomolgid copepods, including two new genera, Ecphysarion and Unicispina, are described, all associated with various species of the scleractinian genus Acropora in New Caledonia, at Ceram and Obi in the Moluccas, and at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands: Schedomolgus idanus, S. majusculus, S. insignellus, S. exiliculus, Scyphuliger eumorphus, S. aristoides, Ecphysarion ampullulum, E. spinulatum, and Unicispina latigenitalis. New records are given for Ecphysarion lobophomm (Humes & Ho, 1968), comb. nov., Scyphuliger concavipes Humes, 1991, S. manifestus Humes, 1991, and S. tenuatus (Humes, 1990).

A new Portholefish, Diplophos vicinia sp. nov., is described on the basis of nine specimens collected from the western Pacific Ocean by commercial midwater trawl. The new species, currently known only from the South China Sea and north of Papua New Guinea, can be easily distinguished from six nominal congeners by the combination of the following characters: dorsal-fin origin closer to snout than caudal-fin base, distance between last two AC photophores half that between preceding photophores, gill rakers 4 + 10–11=14–15, abdominal vertebrae 30–32, caudal vertebrae 44–45, total vertebrae 74–76, and the following photophore counts: IP 13–14, PV 18–19, IV 31–32, VAV 12–13, AC 37–39 + 2, and IC 83–86.

Abstract Two deep-sea eels collected from the western Pacific Ocean are described in this study. Based on their morphological characteristics, the two deep-sea eel specimens were assumed to belong to the cusk-eel family Ophidiidae and the cutthroat eel family Synaphobranchidae. To accurately identify the species of the deep-sea eel specimens, we sequenced the mitochondrial genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA)). Through molecular phylogenetic analysis based on mtDNA CO1 and 16S rRNA gene sequences, these species clustered with the genera Bassozetus and Synaphobranchus, suggesting that the deep-sea eel specimens collected are two species from the genera Bassozetus and Synaphobranchus in the western Pacific Ocean, respectively. This is the first study to report new records of the genera Bassozetus and Synaphobranchus from the western Pacific Ocean based on mitochondrial DNA markers.
