World’s northenmost and rarely observed Nudibranchs: three new Onchidoridid species (Gastropoda: Doridida) from Russian seas

The world’s most northern species of the nudibranch genus Adalaria rossica sp. nov. from Franz Josef Land and a new species of Onchidoris expectata sp. nov. from the north-west Pacific Matua Island (Kurile Islands) are described. Prior to this study the nudibranch fauna from Franz Josef Land was represented only by two common North Atlantic species. Molecular taxonomic data were not applied for the Franz Josef Land nudibranchs previously. Nudibranchs of Matua Island have never been investigated. Furthermore, a new North Pacific taxon, Adalaria ultima sp. nov., is described here. The taxonomy of the onchidoridid genera Adalaria and Onchidoris is discussed.

A new species of Geodia is described from the North Pacific, collected in the summer of 2012 in the western Aleutian Islands. Geodia starki sp. nov. differs from all known species of Geodia by the possession of two categories of sterrasters and exceptionally large megascleres. The new species is compared with congeners of the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, Arctic and the North Atlantic Oceans.

A new species of goniasterid sea star, Hippasteria aleutica sp. nov. is described from the Aleutian Islands, and compared to H. phrygiana (Parelius, 1768) from the North Atlantic-Arctic, as well as its congeners from the North Pacific. Distribution is discussed and a key to the described species of Hippasteria in Alaskan waters is presented.

About thirty years ago a species of manna, obtained from the Eucalyptus Mannifera, was brought from New South Wales, and was examined by Dr Thomas Thomson, and afterwards by Professor Johnston, both of whom ascertained it to contain a new species of sugar, different from the mannite which exists in ordinary manna. The author had, through the kindness of Mr Sheriff Cay, an opportunity of examining a very different species of manna, remarkable both from its chemical constitution, and from its possessing a definitely organised structure. This substance was discovered by Mr Robert Cay in 1844, in the interior of Australia Felix, to the north and north-west of Melbourne, where it occurs at certain seasons on the leaves of the Mallee plant, Eucalyptus Dumosa, and is known to the natives by the name of Lerp.

A new species of Polyplacophora (Mollusca) has been found in the Salice outcrop, in the Peloritain Mountains (Sicily, Italy), is attributed to the early Pleistocene. Lepidopleurus (Leptochiton) salicensis n.sp. is characterized by its uniformly sculptured tegmentum, with (well) raised, randomly distributed, neatly separated rounded/polygonal granules. The new species is compared with Lepidopleurus (Leptochiton) alveolus (M.Sars MS, Lovén, 1846), from the North Atlantic, and Lepidopleurus (Leptochiton) tavianii Dell’Angelo, Landau & Marquet, 2004, from the Pliocene of Estepona (Málaga, Spain).

A description is given of Siboglinum holmei sp.nov., a shallow-water Atlantic species. It is compared with S. caulleryi, a related species from the Pacific.

A new species of pincer wasps, Bocchus schmalhauseni sp. nov. (Dryinidae) is described from Rovno amber (Ukraine). The amber piece was collected in the Vladimirets District in the north-west of the Rovno region. Taking into account this new record, a total of five species of Dryinidae are registered from Rovno amber. A key to the fossil species of Bocchus Ashmead is presented. The possible reasons for the different distribution of Dryinus species on both coasts of Subparathetys are discussed.

The first species ofLamellisabella to be described from the Atlantic Ocean has rows of small teeth on the tentacles. It occurs at about 4000 m depth in the Bay of Biscay, and its range probably extends along the continental rise at least as far south as the Gulf of Guinea.

A new species of Ophlitaspongia (Porifera: Microcionidae) from wave-exposed sublittoral rock in the north-east Atlantic is described and compared to the two other species recorded from the genus in the north-east Atlantic. The species known as Ophlitaspongia seriata is considered to be a junior synonym of Halichondria panicea. Consequently, the name O. papilla has been reinstated. The other recorded species O. basifixa, is from deep water. Ophlitaspongia basifixa has characters which differentiate it from Ophlitaspongia sp. nov. The genus Ophlitaspongia has been separated from related genera and reinstated for species in the North Atlantic.
