Recent survey work on palms in Costa Rica has resulted in the discovery of several new species of Derbidae, especially in the Cenchreini. During a recent expedition, specimens collected by light trapping at the Hotel Villa Blanca (cloud forest) were determined to be a novel species of Omolicna Fennah. Sequence data was generated for the novel taxon for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci. Pairwise analyses and phylogenetic analyses support placement of the novel taxon in Omolicna.

An ongoing survey to document planthopper diversity on palms (Arecaceae) is being conducted in Costa Rica. During these efforts a new species of derbid planthopper belonging to the genus Agoo was found on Astrocaryum alatum Loomis in the Heredia province at La Selva Biological Station and is described here as Agoo luzdenia Bahder & Bartlett sp. n., bringing the genus to four described taxa—A. dahliana, A. luzdenia Bahder & Bartlett sp. n., A rubrimarginata, and A. xavieri. Sequence data for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S genes was generated for the novel taxon and strongly supports its placement in the genus Agoo.

A new species of Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Cixiidae: Cixiinae: Oecleini) is established as Myxia baynardi sp. n. collected from native palms in cloud forest habitat in Costa Rica. Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters. Haplaxius delta (Kramer) was collected along the Caribbean coast as a new country record for Costa Rica. Based on morphological characters observed and molecular analysis of COI and 18S, H. delta is herein moved to the genus Myxia.

AbstractIn this study, molecular (ribosomal sequence data), morphological and cross-hybridization properties were used to identify a newSteinernemasp. from Florida, USA. Molecular and morphological data provided evidence for placing the novel species into Clade V, or the ‘glaseri-group’ ofSteinernemaspp. Within this clade, analysis of sequence data of the rDNA genes, 28S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS), depicted the novel species as a distinctive entity and closely related toS. glaseriandS. cubanum.Additionally, cross-hybridization assays showed that the new species is unable to interbreed with either of the latter two species, reinforcing its uniqueness from a biological species concept standpoint. Key morphological diagnostic characters forS. khuongin. sp. include the mean morphometric features of the third-stage infective juveniles: total body length (average: 1066 μm), tail length (average: 65 μm), location of the excretory pore (average: 80.5 μm) and the values ofc(average: 16.4),D% (average: 60.5),E% (average: 126) andH% (average: 46.6). Additionally, males can be differentiated fromS. glaseriandS. cubanumby the values of several ratios:D% (average: 68),E% (average: 323) and SW% (average: 120). The natural distribution of this species in Florida encompasses both natural areas and citrus groves, primarily in shallow groundwater ecoregions designated as ‘flatwoods’. The morphological, molecular, phylogenetic and ecological data associated with this nematode support its identity as a new species in theS. glaseri-group.

Asexual morph members of Tetraplosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) are generally hyphomycetes and usually found as saprobes occurring on various hosts in lentic habitats. Two isolates of a novel species, Tetraploa aquatica sp. nov., was collected from submerged decaying wood in Dulong river and a stream of Gaoligongshan mountain in Yunnan Province, China. The new species is characterized by short-cylindrical conidia, composed of 4-euseptate, short-cylindrical vertical columns which are verrucose at the base and with 4-setose vertical septate appendages. Tetraploa aquatica can be easily distinguished from other Tetraploa species by their columns which are 2–3-septate, aguttulate, vertical, setose appendaged which tend to remain parallel to one another apically. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and SSU sequence data support its natural placement in Tetraploa. Detailed description and illustrations of this species and comparisons with other morphologically similar taxa in Tetraploa are provided.

During our survey into the diversity of woody litter fungi across the Greater Mekong Subregion, three rhytidhysteron-like taxa were collected from dead woody twigs in China and Thailand. These were further investigated based on morphological observations and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of a combined DNA data matrix containing SSU, LSU, ITS, and tef1-α sequence data. A new species of Rhytidhysteron, R. xiaokongense sp. nov. is introduced with its asexual morph, and it is characterized by semi-immersed, subglobose to ampulliform conidiomata, dark brown, oblong to ellipsoidal, 1-septate, conidia, which are granular in appearance when mature. In addition to the new species, two new records from Thailand are reported viz. Rhytidhysteron tectonae on woody litter of Betula sp. (Betulaceae) and Fabaceae sp. and Rhytidhysteron neorufulum on woody litter of Tectona grandis (Lamiaceae). Morphological descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic notes and phylogenetic analyses are provided for all entries.

During a survey of keratinolytic fungi in China, three Cunninghamella strains were isolated. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and ITS+LSU+EF-1α sequence data showed that these strains constitute a new species related to C. blakesleeana, C. bigelovii, C. multiverticillata and C. phaeospora. The new species differs from C. multiverticillata and C. phaeospora in the shape and size of its teminal and lateral vesicles and can be distinguished from C. blakesleeana and C. bigelovii by the absent of zygosporangia, and the shape and size of it sporangioles. The results of phylogenetic and morphological analyses indicate that the three strains are a new species of Cunninghamella. Descriptions and illustrations of this novel species are provided in this paper.

The derbid genus Oropuna is a small taxon of Neotropical planthoppers in the tribe Cenchreini comprised of three species. Recent survey work on palms for planthoppers in Costa Rica resulted in the discovery of a fourth species, Oropuna halo sp. n. In this study the new species is described and a key to the four species is provided along with sequence data for the cyctochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S rRNA gene for the novel taxon.

Lasiodiplodia species are commonly as endophytes, saprobes and pathogens in tropics and subtropics. During an investigation of Botryosphaeriaceae in Thailand, two Lasiodiplodia taxa were isolated. Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses based on combined ITS, tef and tub2 sequence data support the establishment of a novel species, Lasiodiplodia chiangraiensis, isolated from woody hosts. Lasiodiplodia chiangraiensis is phylogenetically close to L. iraniensis and L. thailandica, but represents a distinct lineage. The new species could be distinguished from extant Lasiodiplodia species by its mature conidial dimensions. A detailed description and illustration are provided, as well as an updated phylogenetic tree (ITS, tef and tub2) including all species (with available molecular data) of Lasiodiplodia. In addition, the accepted genera in Botryosphaeriaceae based on recent studies are given.

This paper describes five sarcosomataceous samples collected from southwestern China and provides an updated two locus phylogeny of Sarcosomataceae. Two new species, Donadinia echinacea and Plectania sichuanensis, are described based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Donadinia echinacea is a dematiaceous hyphomycete with pleurogenous, guttulate conidia. Plectania sichuanensis is a cup-fungus distinguished by its ochre hymenium and ellipsoid ascospores with small multiple oil droplets. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and LSU sequence data using broad taxon sampling supports establishment of the new species along with eight distinct clades within Sarcosomataceae.
