Two new species and a new species group of Mycodrosophila Oldenberg, 1914 (Diptera: Drosophilidae) from the Amazon

There are 130 described species in the genus Mycodrosophila Oldenberg, 1914, distributed across all biogeographic regions. Most of these species show essential mycophagy. Currently, ten species are known from the Neotropical Region, nine of which are found in the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Pampa biomes of Brazil. In this study, we describe the adult external morphology and structures of male and/or female terminalia for two new species from the Amazon Biome of Brazil. In addition, we propose a new species group, the Mycodrosophila neoprojectans group, encompassing the two new species described here, together with three previously described species from the Neotropics.

Dipsas sazimai sp. nov. is described from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all congeners by showing anterior portion of body with rounded dorsal blotches wider than interblotches; median and posterior portion of body with blotches higher than long and narrower than interblotches; posterior body blotches lighter than anterior blotches; posterior blotches with conspicuous white edge in paraventral region; tiny and vertically oriented streaks in the interblotches from the posterior half of body; 187–209 ventral scales; 107–129 subcaudal scales; and the first blotch not reaching the rictus. Based on characters of external morphology and color pattern we suggest the new species is related to taxa of the recently proposed Dipsas incerta species group.

Cis leoi, a new species of ciid beetle from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described based on external morphology and cytogenetics. Its placement in the Cis species group is discussed.

AbstractA new species of Nippostrongylinae (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae), Stilestrongylus rolandoi n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the small intestine of the rodent Euryoryzomys russatus in the Atlantic Forest (Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil). The genus Stilestrongylus includes 23 species, which parasitize rodents occurring in the Neotropical region. Stilestrongylus aureus (Durette-Desset & Sutton, 1985) from Argentina, S. azarai (Durette-Desset & Sutton, 1985) from Argentina, S. flavescens (Sutton & Durette-Desset, 1991) from Uruguay, S. franciscanus (Digiani & Durette-Desset, 2002) from Argentina, S. gracielae (Digiani & Durette-Desset, 2006) from Argentina, and S. oryzomysi (Sutton & Durette-Desset, 1991) from Argentina are closely related to Stilestrongylus rolandoi n. sp., all having caudal bursa patterns of types 1–4 in one of the lobes. Stilestrongylus rolandoi n. sp. is distinguished from the aforementioned species by its ray 6 being short in relation to rays 4 and 5, which are long and robust, and by having caudal bursa patterns of types 1–4 in both lobes. The new species has 27 ridges in the mid-body in males, and 24 in females, and has one of the highest ratios of spicule length to body length (21−33%) in this genus.

AbstractInsects in the subfamily Ischnorhininae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cercopidae), known as spittlebugs or froghoppers, are mainly distributed in the Neotropical region. A few genera include pest species of economic relevance, including Prosapia Fennah, 1949. Two new species from Mexico and Costa Rica are now described for this genus, and a key to species is proposed for the P. inferens (Walker, 1858) species group.

Several new records of the fairyfly genus Erythmelus Enock (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) are reported from Argentina, Chile, and Guatemala, since the review by Triapitsyn et al. (2007). Erythmelus (Erythmelus) yuzhanin Triapitsyn sp. n., is described from Córdoba Province, Argentina. A key to the clavatus species group of the nominate subgenus is provided.

Phytoseiid mites have received considerable world wide attention because of their potential as natural enemies of phytophagous mites (McMurtry, 1984). The Amblyseius obtusus group Chant  is the largest species group in the genus Amblyseius. Chant & McMurtry (2004) divided the group into seven subgroups based on spermathecal morphology. The andersoni subgroup of Chant & McMurtry, 2004 is characterized by a spermatheca with the calyx dish-, cup-, bell-, or V-shaped, with the length/width ratio at the mid-point of the calyx < 3:1. A total of 24 species of the andersoni subgroup are known from the Neotropical region, 13 of these from Brazil (Moraes et al., 2004). A new species of this subgroup, Amblyseius paulofariensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated in this paper, from specimens collected in the semi-deciduous forest area of “Estação Ecológica de Paulo de Faria”, a protected natural area in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, on three species of Euphorbiaceae: Acalypha diversifolia Jacq., Actinostemon communis (Müll. Arg.) and Alchornea glandulosa Poepp. & Endl.. In the region where this mites was found, the climate is of the type Cwa-Aw of Köppen, with two distinct seasons: one wet, from October to March, and the other dry, from April to September. The annual mean temperature is 25°C, with a maximum mean of 30°C and a minimum mean of 20°C (Barcha & Arid, 1971; Arid & Barcha, 1973).

Two new species of the stonefly genus Neoperla, N. jiangae sp. nov. and N. jiaoxihe sp. nov., are described from Shaanxi Province of northwest China. The new species are compared with related congeners. Neoperla flagellata Li & Murányi, 2012 (in Li et al. 2012b) is placed as a synonym of N. bicornua Wu, 1973. The Neoperla sinensis species subgroup in the N. montivaga group is proposed and defined.

The study of the Poduromorpha fauna of a sample from Paraná State, Brazil, and multiple samples from high altitude mountains of Southeast Brazil provided important data on Hypogastruridae, including a new record for Brazil ofCeratophysella engadinensis(Gisin 1949) and two new species belonging toXenyllaTullberg 1869,X. manuelaesp.n. andX. wandaesp.n. These last present a pair of remarkable creased cuticular structures on abdominal tergite IV, apparently unique among the genus. In addition, a new species of Pseudachorutinae,Cephalachorutes anneaesp.n., is the first Neotropical record ofCephalachorutesBedos & Deharveng 1991, corroborating its holotropical distribution. The set of characteristics displayed by this new species required the expansion of the genus diagnosis.
