AbstractMitigation of pressure pulsations in the exhaust of a pulse detonation combustor is crucial for operation with a downstream turbine. For this purpose, a device termed the shock divider is designed and investigated. The intention of the divider is to split the leading shock wave into two weaker waves that propagate along separated ducts with different cross sections, allowing the shock waves to travel with different velocities along different paths. The separated shock waves redistribute the energy of the incident shock wave. The shock dynamics inside the divider are investigated using numerical simulations. A second-order dimensional split finite volume MUSCL-scheme is used to solve the compressible Euler equations. Furthermore, low-cost simulations are performed using geometrical shock dynamics to predict the shock wave propagation inside the divider. The numerical simulations are compared to high-speed schlieren images and time-resolved total pressure recording. For the latter, a high-frequency pressure probe is placed at the divider outlet, which is shown to resolve the transient total pressure during the shock passage. Moreover, the separation of the shock waves is investigated and found to grow as the divider duct width ratio increases. The numerical and experimental results allow for a better understanding of the dynamic evolution of the flow inside the divider and inform its capability to reduce the pressure pulsations at the exhaust of the pulse detonation combustor.

Metacyclops sakaeratensis sp. nov. and M. brancelji sp. nov. are described as being present in the mountainous areas of Northeastern and Southern Thailand, respectively. Two new species resemble M. woni in both sexes, but they are easily distinguished from their Cambodian relative by having: 1) transverse suture on the dorsal surface of the genital double-somite, 2) serrated hyaline frill on the posterior margin of third pedigerous somite, 3) different length / width ratio of caudal ramus, and 4) a row of spinule on caudal surface of intercoxal sclerite of the third swimming legs. The significant differences between M. sakaeratensis sp. nov. and M. brancelji sp. nov. are present in both sexes, including the body size, integumental ornamentation of the body surface, length / width ratio of caudal ramus, armature of the fifth swimming leg, and the male sixth swimming leg. In addition, an up-to-date key to the female of all fifteen species of Metacyclops recorded in Asia is provided.

Perforated plates are widely used in thin-walled engineering structures, for example, for lightweight designs of structures and access for installation. For the purpose of analysis, such perforated plates with two opposite free edges might be considered as a series of successive Timoshenko beams. A new semi-analytical model was developed in this study using the Timoshenko shear beam theory for the critical buckling load of perforated plates, with the characteristic equations derived. Results of the proposed modelling were compared with those obtained by FEM and show good agreement. The influence of the dividing number of the successive beams on the accuracy of the critical buckling load was studied with respect to various boundary conditions. And the effect of geometrical parameters, such as the aspect ratio, the thickness-to-width ratio and the cutout-to-width ratio were also investigated. The study shows that the proposed semi-analytical model can be used for buckling analysis of a perforated plate with opposite free edges with the capacity to consider the shear effect in thick plates.

Abstract. Leveraging the concept of atmospheric rivers (ARs), a detection technique based on a widely utilized global algorithm to detect ARs (Guan et al., 2018; Guan and Waliser, 2015, 2019) was recently developed to detect aerosol atmospheric rivers (AARs) using the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 reanalysis (Chakraborty et al., 2021a). The current study further characterizes and quantifies various details of AARs that were not provided in that study, such as AARs’ seasonality, event characteristics, vertical profiles of aerosol mass mixing ratio and wind speed, and the fraction of total annual aerosol transport conducted by AARs. Analysis is also performed to quantify the sensitivity of AAR detection to the criteria and thresholds used by the algorithm. AARs occur more frequently over, and typically extend from, regions with higher aerosol emission. For a number of planetary-scale pathways that exhibit large climatological aerosol transport, AARs contribute 40–80 % to the total annual transport. DU AARs are more frequent in boreal spring, SS AARs are often more frequent during the boreal winter (summer) in the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere, CA AARs are more frequent during dry seasons and often originate from the global rainforests and industrial areas, and SU AARs are present in the Northern Hemisphere during all seasons. For most aerosol types, the mass mixing ratio within AARs is highest near the surface and decreases monotonically with altitude. However, DU and CA AARs over or near the African continent exhibit peaks in their aerosol mixing ratio profiles around 700 hPa. AAR event characteristics are mostly independent of species with mean length, width, and length/width ratio around 4000 km, 600 km, and 8, respectively.

Grain size is a key factor influencing the grain yield in rice. To identify the as-yet-unknown genes regulating grain size in Korean japonica rice, we developed a recombinant inbred line population (n = 162) from a cross between Odae (large-grain) and Joun (small-grain), and measured six traits including the thousand-grain weights of unhulled and hulled seeds, grain area, grain length, grain width and grain length-to-width ratio using high-throughput image analysis at the F8 and F9 generations. A genetic map was constructed using 248 kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers that were polymorphic between the parental genotypes, and 29 QTLs affecting the six traits were identified, of which 15 were stable in both F8 and F9 generations. Notably, three QTL clusters affecting multiple traits were detected on chromosomes 6, 7 and 11. We analyzed whole-genome resequencing data of Odae and Joun, and selected candidate genes for the stable QTLs in the identified clusters that have high- or moderate-impact variations between Odae and Joun and encode proteins the families of which have been reported to be related to grain size regulation. These results will facilitate the identification of genes underlying the QTLs and promote molecular breeding of high-yielding Korean japonica rice varieties.

Abstract At a routine health check of a female peregrine falcon, 23 trematodes preliminary identified as Prosthogonimus sp. were removed from the bursa of Fabricius. Based on morphological and molecular examination, a new species, Prosthogonimus falconis, was described. The pear-shaped flukes were 4.3–6.9 mm long, with greatest width posterior to testes. Tegumental spines measuring between 17 and 21 μm long covered the whole body. Length and width ratio of oral to ventral suckers were 1:1.3. Extracaecal, multifollicular vitelline glands commenced prior to acetabulum and terminated posterior to testes. Eggs in the distal uterus measured 21 × 12 μm. Molecular analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene regions revealed that the new species described here is phylogenetically closest to Prosthogonimus cuneatus and Prosthogonimus pellucidus clusters.

The present investigation was carried out at the College of Forestry, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India during August, 2018 to June, 2019 to study the genetic variability in growth characteristics among different clones of Eucalyptus tereticornis. Different clones of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. were planted in RCBD, with 4 replications revealed significant variations among all eight treatments (clones) with respect to 9 different characters. Based on the mean performance, treatment-1 (clone-526) showed maximum value for characters like biomass (1124.17), plant height (247.9 cm), collar diameter (23.25 mm), and a number of leaves plant-1 (463.25 number). Similarly, the maximum value was observed in treatment-8 (clone-136) for traits like leaf area (42.70 cm2), leaf length (15 cm), and leaf width (5.75 cm). The highest leaf length to leaf width ratio (3.57) and lowest number of branches plant-1 (18.75 number) were found in treatment-2 (clone-288). All characters had exhibited higher genotypic variance than an environmental variance. Similarly, the genetic coefficient of variation in the case of all variables was also found greater than an environmental coefficient of variation. Heritability was found maximum in plant height (87.35%) and all other characters also showed high heritability. Genetic advance as % of mean was found maximum in biomass (71.15%). Based on the overall mean performance of growth characters, Treatment-1 (Clone-526) was found as a superior clone with respect to the most important character biomass for the test locality. High GCV, heritability, and GAM value for biomass indicated that the character would respond to selection for the improvement program.

Purpose: Reading spinal CT (Computed Tomography) images is very important in the diagnosis of spondylosis, which is time-consuming and prones to make biases. In this paper, we propose a framework based on Faster-RCNN to improve detection performances of three spinal fracture lesions: cfracture (cervical fracture), tfracture (thoracic fracture) and lfracture (lumbar fracture). Methods: First, we use ResNet50 to replace VGG16 in backbone network in Faster-RCNN to increase depth of training network. Second, we utilize soft-NMS (Non-Maximum Suppression) instead of NMS to avoid missed detection of overlapped lesions. Third, we simplify RPN (Region Proposal Network) to accelerate training speed and reduce missed detection. Finally, we modify the classifier layer in Faster-RCNN and choose appropriate length-width ratio by changing anchor sizes in sliding window, then adopt multi-scale strategy in training to improve efficiency and accuracy. Results: The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has a good performance, mAP (mean average precision) is 90.6%, IOU (Intersection of Union) is 88.5 and detection time is 0.053 second per CT image, which means our proposed method can accurately detect spinal fracture lesions. Conclusion: Our proposed method can provide assistance and scientific references for both doctors and patients in clinically.

This paper studied the resonant behaviors of a bottom-hinged oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) as well as the relationship of resonance with the response and capture width ratio (CWR). The time-domain dynamic equation of an OWSC in shallow water based on the boundary element method (BEM) was solved by a Python code, considering the corrected wave surface and the nonlinearities of restoring moment, drag, and friction. The unknown factors, such as wave surface corrected factor and drag coefficient, were effectively calibrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. An intermediate initial angle in free decay is appropriate for use to determine the natural period. Under regular waves, the resonance occurs near the natural period for the uniform wave amplitude, rather than the uniform wave torque amplitude, and can disappear due to the amplification of Power Take-Off (PTO) friction. Under unit-amplitude regular waves, the period of maximum CWR is relatively close to the period of maximum velocity, but far from the resonant period. Under irregular waves, no stable resonance is observed because the maximum equivalent pitch angle appears at different peak periods of wave spectra with the variation in PTO damping. When the period of a regular wave or the peak period of an irregular wave is close to the natural period, a phase hysteresis of velocity relative to wave torque always occurs.

Abstract— A new species, Espeletia ocetana (Asteraceae), from about 3500 m a. s. l. in Páramo de Ocetá, Mongua, Boyacá department, Colombia, is described and illustrated. The new species exhibits a caulescent rosette habit (0.7‐1.8 m tall), sessile leaves, elliptic leaf laminae with greyish indumentum, robust bracteate thyrsoid capitulescences spreading laterally from rosette, each holding 16‐37(‐69) capitula, external phyllaries 14.2‐31.1 mm long, and ray florets 13.9‐21.3 mm long arranged in 2.0‐2.9 series. It is markedly different from the majority of other members of the genus, and only slightly similar to E. jaramilloi, from which it can be easily distinguished by its taller stems, wider leaves with a smaller length/width ratio, and longer sheaths. Furthermore, E. ocetana has capitula with ray florets arranged in fewer series, and with longer phyllaries, ray corollas, ray corolla limbs, ray styles, ray style branches, disc florets, and disc styles. In addition, E. ocetana is distributed allopatrically in regard to E. jaramilloi, and differs as well in its ecological preference for humid to very humid shrubby páramos. Espeletia ocetana is rather abundant in its type locality, which is a relatively well-conserved páramo located within the limits of Parque Natural Regional Siscunsí-Ocetá. However, it is absent from road margins, abandoned agriculture fields, and other areas impacted by human activities. Further studies will be necessary to know appropriately the extent of the geographic distribution of E. ocetana, its ecological requirements and its phylogenetic affinities with other species.
